SENIOR PROJECT

This program provides seniors with real-life experiences in their career choices. For ten days in May, par-ticipating seniors will “shadow” one mentor in a field in which the students have shown interest. During this time, they will gain an understanding of the practical nature of the professional world – an experience that will provide the necessary drive to succeed in college. More information was distributed in January, but we’d like you to be aware of some important details. For a senior to be eligible to go on Senior Project, the student must:

Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 after 7 semesters

Be passing all current classes in preparation for graduation

Have no out-of-school suspensions during senior year

Have missed no more than 7 days during the first three quarters of their senior year (95% attend-ance)

Students need to find their own placement. A list of possible on-site sponsors is available in the main of-fice. The last day of school for seniors who participate in Senior Project is May 3.

A special shout out to Taylor Hays (beam) who qualified for the state gymnastics meet!

Kudos to Camden Loeschen who has qualified for the State Bowling tournament!

And finally, congratulations to our Indoor Track athletes and Coach Dan Iwan and Coach Nicole Geiger

who have qualified for the Indoor State meet: Ada Ngozi, Greg Parries, Brett Shannon, Gurvon Smith, Kris

Calhoun, Justin Finney, Daylon Gulley, Logan Esper, Kareem Yousef, Johnny Ciccero, Sam Young,

CAP AND GOWN ORDERS

Attention Senior Parents: In order for your son or daughter to participate in the Commencement ceremonies, seniors must wear a cap and gown. If you are planning to use an older sibling’s cap and gown, please remember that boys wear blue and girls wear white. The only items you would need are a cap and tassel and these items can be or-dered from Jostens. If you have any additional questions please email me at [email protected]. Thank you, Jane Langston, Senior Class Advisor [email protected].

SCHOOL COUNSELING NEWS A Newsletter for the Students and Parents of Solon High School

Editor: Cindy Russell March, 2019

Technology continues to change and impact the way we communicate with one another, especially our children. The following are some highlights from a recently published article, Tips and Tricks on Social Media for Parents. This information will be helpful when discussing the importance of appropri-ate use of social media. Social Media and Identity: ● Students need some sort of identity online for branding purposes (college, job/career market searches for online information about candidates). ● Online/digital footprint is the new resume. ● Employers and colleges want to have positive, vibrant people online because they represent the job/college. ● It is important to monitor/audit student’s online image. A simple Google search is helpful as a starting place. ● Search for your student by name : even if it is not them! Know who else has your child’s name! ● High School students should post positive/good things they are doing in the community/colleges/employers DO look for this!

○ Colleges WILL do a Google search on your student. Scholarship committees, internship locations, and athletics departments will as well - even after awarding funds.

○ Funds/college offers have been revoked after negative social media posts (inappropriate language/ content posts is one of the largest reasons this happens).

○ Slowly takes time to develop a positive digital footprint. This process can take 1-2 years to develop the student’s image the way they should be seen by others! Dialogue regarding image and safety is important: ● Discuss the future with your child-visit colleges, write down goals/careers. This serves as a guide to moti-vate students. ● Use posts you see to start a discussion in the car or at the dinner table. ● Be open to learning from them “show me more”. ● Discuss the need for posts to be LIGHT, BRIGHT, and POLITE! ● Best safety resource is dialog with your children! ● Research from McAfee (2012) says that 70% of teens reported that they hide online behavior from their parents. ● Dangers of friending people student does not know in person. ● Discuss how one tweet can get someone fired/in trouble with their employer/college. ● Geolocation on many apps track the location of the user; this presents a safety concern. Discuss this with your children and the dangers of this.

○ Some apps allow you to turn this feature off. Some other tips to consider: ● Be fully present - cannot run from technology. ● New! Gaming addiction is now officially a health disorder according to The World Health Organization. Read the article for more information and warning signs. ● Limiting screen time? Great blog posting from a mom called Your Phone is not your Property - When to Allow Social Media to be Public? ● YOU decide.

The end of third quarter and spring break are fast approaching. SHS PTA is getting ready for our busy season. Please look for upcoming notices about spring budget bin, student recognition, staff appreciation, af-ter-prom fundraisers and activities, and year-end programs. It takes many hands to make these events suc-cessful. Please help if you can. Please mark your calendars with the After-Prom Celebrity Bartending fundraising event at Senorita Bonita’s on March 21 and help support After-Prom. After-Prom is a huge endeavor and we would not be able to put on this popular and very important event without the support of the SHS families and our community. Watch for the upcoming all-school mailing asking for donations and volunteers for After-Prom. We need many volunteers to help set-up, work and clean-up the event. We also need your financial contributions. All donors will be recognized in the After-Prom program that is distributed at the open house from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on May 11.

THANK YOU TO:

Jen Schusterman and Carol Eisenberg and the After-Prom/Senior Send-Off Committee for working so hard on this wonderful event. HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND SAFETY

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. 1 in 10 teens that have been on a date have been abused by their boyfriend/girlfriend. That is 1.5 million high school students nationwide that have experienced abuse. Teen dating violence is defined as a pattern of abuse or threat of abuse against teenage dating part-ners, occurring in different forms, including verbal, emotional, physical, sexual and digital. Tips to help your teen in regards to dating violence, even if you don’t suspect abuse: Be a Role Model.

Treat your kid and others with respect.

Children usually model their behavior after what they see at home.

START TALKING about healthy relationships early, before they start to date. Three in four parents never

talk to their children about domestic violence. If you are worried about your teen, call loveisrespect helpline at

1-866-331-9474 or text loveis to 22522.

There are also several apps out there for help. Love is not Abuse app is an educational resource for par-

ents that demonstrates the dangers of digital dating abuse and provides much needed information on the

growing problem of teen dating violence and abuse. Circle of 6 app is for older college aged students and

their friends to stay close, safe and prevent violence before it happens. One Love Foundation app helps the

user determine if a relationship is unsafe and helps create the best action plan.

It’s March! So I guess it’s appropriate to start off by saying that Marching Band season is right around the corner. Yes I know! Crazy huh? Parent volunteers will be in the school over the next few weeks to refit re-turning band members for new uniforms if they need a different size. Please watch for communications on the Facebook page about when parent volunteers will be in band. And remind your child to be refitted if they need to be. Also, please watch email and Facebook for future communications on when the band camp infor-mation night is scheduled. Tentatively it’s scheduled for March 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School band room and everyone is welcome to attend. Congratulations to band and orchestra on successful concerts and to choir for their upcoming concert on March 7! SMP is proud to give away six $1,000 scholarships this year. There are two for band, two for orchestra, and two for choir. Applications are due by 3:00 p.m. on March 13. Applicants must have been a member of band orchestra or choir for all 4 years of high school. Seniors can see their HS guidance officers for ques-tions on these scholarships. Thank you to all the people who have stepped up and volunteered! We could not provide such amazing support without our volunteers! Many hands helped to make our pasta dinner and MIM Invitational huge suc-cesses. . Our parents continue to amaze me! Please head on over to solonmusicparents.org and sign up to-day! We can use all the help we can get. A few hours of your time makes a huge difference when combined all together. It really does make a huge difference.
