The High School C&I Committee met at Lee County High School in room 1036. Ophelia Livingston, Acting Chair of the C&I Committee in Tamara Brogan’s absence, called the meeting to order and reviewed and approved the minutes from the August 8, 2016 meeting. The committee approved the amended agenda for the September 7th meeting.

Item IV Beginning Teacher Support Plan Patricia Coldren provided a handout for the 2016-2017 BT Support Plan. There was only one change this year in the support that we offer our beginning teachers. Our third year teachers will now have a choice of the sessions they attend. They can continue in the sessions presented as in the past two years and will now have the options of choosing Beginning Boards for those that would like to try the National Boards in their fourth year, or choose Growth Mindset, learning about the research of growth mindset and how to bring that into their classrooms. After Mrs. Coldren’s presentation, the Committee agreed to send this plan to the Board for approval at the next Board meeting, under the Consent Agenda.

Item V Superintendent’s Remarks Andy Bryan thanked everyone for their efforts and hard work involving performance grades and growth district wide, as well as the ACT efficiency scores and our graduation rate.

Item VI Instructional Update John Conway thanked everyone for the teamwork that went into the successes we experienced last year. He also mentioned how impressed he was with the 3 weeks prior to school starting and the staff development that was offered. There were hundreds of folks involved in these events. He thanks everyone for their commitment. He also mentioned the Literacy Plan taking another step forward with the partnership established with East Carolina University and Dr. Guidry. He talked about the ASW, (Analysis of Student Work, which is a method of measuring Student growth if a teacher is not measured in another way, such as an end of course or an end of grade test). Teachers involved should have already received information for the upcoming year’s training. The Central Office will provide support for this training. Please call or email with any questions.

Item VII Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Survey Presentation Wendy Carlyle gave a short presentation on the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act). No Child Left Behind is being replaced by Every Student Succeeds Act. Each State is required to create a plan to submit to the Federal Government and as such we have been asked as a LEA to contribute to that plan. Surveys have gone out to each Elementary, Middle, and High School and we are compiling the information as each School Improvement Team responds and will then submit everything to the State. Mrs. Carlyle says they have been participating in a series of Webinars and once all information is received, will participate in the final Webinar to see the outcome of what the State presents to the Federal Government. Please email Wendy with any comments or concerns you would like to share.

Item VIII Best Practice – The Lenovo Scholar Network/LCHS

Justin Wilkinson, Director of the Academy of Finance and Quinlan Henry, Director of the Academy of Engineering. Both Academies were selected out of a National application process to be 2 of 20 schools to participate in the Lenovo Mobile App Development Program this year. This program gives us the opportunity to work with our students in real world problem solving. Students will create an app to solve a problem in their school or community. There are multiple tutorials and support to assist in the development of the app and compete with other students throughout the country. Each Academy will have 15 teams that have the opportunity to participate. This is just one example….real world problems and applications keeping students motivated and keeping students excited about the work they are doing in their classrooms. This concept can apply in many other subject areas and be useful in educating our students.
