Greetings, Welcome to March! Now that our Fall 2015 application deadline has passed, we’re reflecting on our season to date. Similar to last year, our EA program produced applications from many outstanding students around the world. The energy, interest and enthusiasm of our applicants continues to excite and humble our campus community. We also recognize fewer offers of admission were extended in our Early Action round. Many outstanding students did not receive the positive decision they hoped for in the mail. However all is not lost, the class is still very much being formed, giving us some difficult decisions ahead. Last fall, we enrolled our largest and most accomplished freshman class ever, with 6,505 students. Our goal for Fall 2015 remains constant at an enrolling class of 6,000 students. Our decision not to over-enroll means we must cautiously approach our next round of decisions looking for students who will contribute to our campus community and who are also most interested in enrolling at the University of Michigan. If you have a deferred student who has indicated that Michigan is their first choice, and you feel strongly that the student is a competitive applicant who will contribute to our campus community, I encourage you to reach out to your U-M admissions counselor directly. Their contact information is here. Conversely, please let your students know that if we need more information or new materials from them, we’ll be in touch. We recognize that this level of selectivity can be stressful for your students and their parents – and in turn, for you. In the coming months, we’ll work very hard to shape a class that will be an outstanding fit for students, and continued campus commitment to excellence. Similar to last year, our EA program produced applications from many outstanding students

around the world. The energy, interest and enthusiasm of our applicants continues to excite and

humble our campus community.

COLLEGE OF LITERATURE, SCIENCE, AND THE ARTSLSA INTRODUCES NEW COGNITIVE SCIENCE MAJOR

A new major, through the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, is designed for students who want to study the relationship between the brain and the mind. Cognitive Science combines coursework from existing U-M departments including linguistics, philosophy and psychology.

Students majoring in the subject select one of four tracks to study: language and cognition, computation and cognition, philosophy and cognition; or decision and cognition. They are required to take a senior capstone course. The course examines intriguing questions like the relationship between the mental and the physical and the definition and motivation of language, though, choice, learning, emotion and motivation.

NEW MINOR IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP AVAILABLE TO ALL U-M STUDENTS, BUILDS ON CAMPUS-WIDE INITIATIVE

An entrepreneurial education is now available to all students at the University of Michigan. A new 15-credit minor in entrepreneurship aims to attract students from diverse areas of study. The minor, based in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, is the signature program of Innovate Blue, U-M’s campus-wide initiative on entrepreneurship and innovation. The minor expands on the nine-credit program in entrepreneurship currently offered and adds to the growing number of entrepreneurship programs and activities available for U-M students, including entrepreneurship centers, startup accelerators, countless competitions and more than 18 entrepreneurial student groups.

SCHOOL OF KINESIOLOGYRESEARCH LABS PROVIDE GROUND-BREAKING OPPORTUNITIES

Undergraduates in the School of Kinesiology have the chance to assist faculty members in dedicated labs and centers that are conducting ground-breaking research. For example:

• Athletic Training Associate Professor Steven Broglio’s NeuroSport Research Laboratory studies concussion and head impact exposure. The lab recently embarked on a $30 million joint initiative between the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the U.S. Department of Defense to enhance the safety of student-athletes and armed service members.

• Sport Management professors Mark Rosentraub and Stefan Szymanski’s Michigan Center for Sport Management researches sport equipment manufacturers, apparel makers, media, agents, sponsors and advertisers, and teams.

• Movement Science Professor Dan Ferris’s Human Neuromechanics Laboratory studies how humans learn how to walk with robotic lower exoskeletons, across diverse terrain, and after neurological injury or limb amputation.

• Health and Fitness and Movement Science Assistant Professor Rebecca Hasson’s Childhood Disparities Research Laboratory works to identify the causes and consequences of pediatric obesity and uses stress-reduction, physical activity, and diet to prevent and manage pediatric obesity in multi-ethnic populations.

ROSS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS‘MERGE’ CURRICULUM FOCUSES ON INTEGRATIVE LEARNING

Michigan’s Ross School of Business has redesigned its Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) curriculum to meet the changing needs and interests of undergraduate students.

Ross, one of the top-ranked BBA programs in the nation, is leading a transformation in how undergraduate business education is delivered through a new curriculum called MERGE (Multidisciplinary Exploration and Rigorous Guided Education).

Centered on the Ross mission to develop leaders who make a positive difference in the world, the new Ross curriculum allows students to benefit from integrative and guided learning. It challenges them to consider the fundamental role of business in society while encouraging them to lead in a responsible way.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC, THEATRE & DANCEMOORE BUILDING RENOVATION TRANSFORMING CAMPUS

The Earl V. Moore Building, one of the primary facilities of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, continues to be transformed through a renovation and expansion that will provide overall acoustical and space improvements, including essential practice room space for performing arts students as well as a state-of-the-art lecture hall and a new rehearsal hall for large ensembles.

With the addition of the William K. and Delores S. Brehm Pavilion, adding 34,000 gross square feet, the project will result in a 25-percent increase in practice rooms, providing performance majors with the space needed to fulfill the hours of daily practice that is essential to their development. The $24.8 million project will also provide a suite of percussion practice rooms, rehearsal spaces, a new Music Technology Innovation Suite, faculty offices and classrooms. Construction for the project began in early 2014 and is expected to be completed in fall of 2015.

TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNINGWEBINAR TO PROVIDE INFO ON ARCHITECTURE DEGREE

The Taubman Bachelor of Science in Architecture is designed to prepare students for careers in the design field, blending their visual and creative expertise with the tools to create.

Students pursue careers in architecture, designing buildings, homes and structures, while others use their acquired skill set in design careers that range from technology and marketing to construction. FINANCIAL AID UPDATESStudents shouldn’t wait to be admitted and enrolled to apply for financial aid! As soon as possible after Jan. 1, students and families should complete and submit the 2015-16 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for federal aid. U-M’s federal school code is 002325. Entering students should complete the CSS Financial Aid PROFILE to be considered for institutional grants and scholarships. Use U-M’s CSS code 1839. STAMPS SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGNSTAMPS EMPHASIZING INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES

Global citizenship is an integral part of the Stamps curriculum and all Stamps students are expected to have an international experience before they graduate. Last summer, students built cook stoves in Tanzania, studied printmaking in China, and worked with special needs students in Japan. This summer, Stamps students plan to travel to Paris, Florence and Gabon.

STAMPS OFFERING PRE-COLLEGE WORKSHOPS

Stamps is offering three Pre-College Studios that help prepare high school students for a college art and design education. Drawing from Observation is an afternoon class that develops drawing skills in preparation for creating a portfolio for college application. BFA Prep is a 3-week residential studio that gives them a glimpse of the BFA experience, including studio work in 2D and 3D. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERINGNEW RESEARCH COMPLEX TO ADVANCE NANOTECHNOLOGY

With a “breaker space,” ultra-low vibration chambers and tissue culture rooms, a new world-class research complex at Michigan Engineering will let researchers study the forces at work at the smallest scales to advance nanotechnologies in energy, manufacturing, healthcare and biotechnology. The $46 million Center of Excellence in Nanomechanical Science and Engineering is a three-story, 62,880-square-foot addition to the G.G. Brown Laboratories on North Campus.

U-M ACCEPTS RESULTS FROM BOTH SATS AND ACTS

Just a reminder that the University of Michigan still accepts test results from both the SATs and the ACTs.

The recent news that the state of Michigan is switching to SAT testing has caused a bit of confusion to some, so be assured that both are accepted at the University.

The University of Michigan has many resources in place designed to assist students with disabilities, and much of the information is organized on one page: ssd.umich.edu

There, students can find links to nearly all the information they need to reach their potential at U-M, from coaching and mentoring to special study accommodations – even research opportunities than might be of interest to them. There’s also a listing of special scholarships and awards available – along with current news and events on campus. It’s a site that’s definitely worth a click.
