High Point University Panthers

2 2009 HPU Panthers

The High Point University men’s soccer team had its best season in Division I play in 2008, going 9-8-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the Big South. It was the first winning season for the Panthers in their 10 years in Division I. HPU is looking to build on that success in 2009.

In his third year with the Panthers, head coach Dustin Fonder returns 13 letterwinners and nine starters from last year’s squad. Led by senior Hilaire Babou (Wheaton, Md./Walter Johnson) and Matt Tuttle (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds), junior Scott Rojo (Houston, Texas/Lee) and sophomore Karo Okiomah (Austin, Texas/Hendrickson-Pflugerville), four of the top five scorers from a season ago, this group account-ed for 58 percent of the team’s scoring and points in 2008.

HPU will also welcome 17 newcomers to the squad, including early enrollee Fejiro Okiomah (Austin, Texas/Hendrickson-Pflugerville), freshman Todd Ray (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic), a three-time All-State player in Texas, and redshirt-freshman Ryan Bennett (Cary, N.C./Cary Christian), a local prod-uct from Cary, N.C., who was a four-time All-State honoree.

In the Big South Preseason Coaches’ Poll, High Point was selected to finish third, its highest projected finish in the team’s 11 years within the Big South.

“I think we should be pretty good this season,” said head coach Dustin Fonder. “We return nine starters and that alone should give us some experience. We will still be young and play a challenging schedule but we proved last year we are capable of finishing at the top of the Big South.”

GOALKeePerSHigh Point will enter the 2009 season with few ques-tions between the pipes as the Panthers return one of the best young goalkeepers in the region in sopho-more Michael Chesler (Highland, Utah/Mountain View). Chesler made the Big South All-Freshman team in 2008 after recording a 1.37 goals-against average along with 61 saves and a .701 save percent-age. The sophomore’s 1.37 GAA is the second-best single-season mark in the team’s Division I record book. Chesler is a natural leader who has been named a team captain as just a sophomore. During the sum-mer, Chesler gained extra experience playing with the Carolina Dynamo in the PDL.

Backing up Chesler will be redshirt freshman Adam Santiago (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) and freshman Ryan Henke (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland). Santiago gained a year of experience last season and will take over as the primary back-up this season. Henke is a quick goalie who plays fearlessly in net.

deFenderSThe HPU defense should be a strong point in 2009 as the backline will feature both experience and depth this season. Four players who started games in the back return for High Point, including junior center back Adam Hatem (Charlotte, N.C./North Meck-lenberg), a second-team All-Big South member who started all 20 games last season.

At the center back position, the Panthers feature four players who will fight it out for two starting positions. Hatem looks to be a favorite to claim one of the two spots after a strong showing last season. The junior has started 39 of the 40 games he has played in during his two seasons at HPU. In 2008, he was one of just four players to start every game.

The other three players looking to step into the start-ing lineup are senior Sam Roca (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), junior Justin Pruetz (Suger Land, Texas/El-kins) and Ray. Roca, a former New Jersey State Player of the Year, transferred to High Point from South Car-olina before the 2008 season. In his first season with the Panthers he played in 19 games with 13 starts. Pruetz began the year as a starter at center back before getting injured halfway through the season. Ray is a solid young player who could step in and start from day one. The freshman brings an added dimension of height to the back line for the Panthers.

On the outside, the Panthers will work in two new fullbacks in sophomore Kendall Lawson (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) on the left and Fejiro Oki-omah on the right. Lawson started five games as a freshman in 2008 and will take over as the full-time left back in 2009. The sophomore is an attacking player with quality speed and an ability to play with the ball at his feet. Okiomah, a great athlete who can play anywhere on the field, will begin his collegiate career at right back. The younger brother of HPU striker Karo Okiomah enrolled in the winter and has been with the team since January. Both fullbacks will contribute to the offensive attack this season.

Other players who could see time at the fullback posi-tion include Bennett at left back and junior Eric Land and redshirt-freshman Jeff Demarchi at right back.

MidFieLdIn the midfield, the Panthers return three players in Babou, Rojo and sophomore Will Stewart (Apex,

3 www.highpointpanthers.com

2009 Men’s SoccerN.C./Apex) who combined to start 55 games in 2008.

Babou earned first-team All-Big South honors last season after finishing the year with four goals and nine points. The midfielder provided a steady pres-ence in the center of the pitch and was a box-to-box player for the Panthers.

Rojo earned second-team All-Big South recognition after finishing the season fourth on the team in points with eight on two goals and four assists. The crafty midfielder has nine assists already in his time at HPU and is only five behind the school record with two seasons to go.

Stewart joined the starting lineup five games into the season and went on to earn Big South All-Freshman honors. A big strong midfielder, Stewart works as a ball winner in the center of the pitch and is very good in the air. The sophomore could also slide back and see time at the center back position.

Senior Ryan Puppolo (Heidelberg, Germany/Heidel-berg) will move up to midfield after playing on the backline last season. A good technical player, Puppolo will help to initiate the attack with his dribbling and passing.

On the wings, Bennett and redshirt-junior Justin Wil-lis (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) could each move into the starting lineup. Bennett, a naturally left-footed player, could play both left wing and left back for the Panthers in 2009. Willis missed all but three matches last season after injuring his ankle but has returned and played his way into discussion for the starting lineup.

In his senior season, Tuttle will provide minutes for the Panthers both in the middle and on the wings. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native played in all 20 games with 15 starts last season, seeing time both up top and in the midfield.

FOrWArdSReturning up top for the Panthers will be Karo Oki-omah. Okiomah finished 2008 second on the team

in points (10) and goals (five) despite missing four games with an injury during the season. The forward scored the game-winning goal in his first collegiate contest against Elon.

Two true freshmen, Shane Malcolm and Shawn Sloan, could emerge to claim a starting role in their first collegiate season. Malcolm is a talented scorer from Florida who led his team in scoring in each of his final three seasons. Sloane finished his high school career with 58 goals and 40 as-sists, including a school record 29 his senior year. Tuttle, Rojo, Bennett and Willis could all see time at the forward postion as well this season based on the formations the team uses.

SCHedULeHPU will face a challenging start to the season which sees them play five games on the road before the home opener on Sept. 19 against USC Upstate. “The schedule will be very challenging for us this sea-son,” said Fonder. “We are away from home early in the year with a young team. We need to not lose our-selves in that stretch. The key stretch this season is that eight of our next 11 after that are at home and we set a precendent last year that we will be tough to beat at home. We need to continue to build on that.”

The team will open the season on Sept. 1 at Elon be-fore participating in two tournaments in which they

dustin Fonder

High Point University head coach Dusting Fonder leads the Panthers into a season with high hopes in 2009, after a 2008 season that was HPU’s best since joining NCAA Div. I and the Big South Conference in 1999. Fonder and his staff have brought in one of High Point University’s best-ever recruiting classes in men’s soccer for the 2009 season, and the squad features a blend of strong talent and experience.

In 2008, Fonder led the Panthers to their best overall finish in Division I play with a mark of 9-8-3. In addition, the team’s conference record of 4-2-2 was its best ever in the Big South, and the team outscored its opponents in Big South play for the first time since joining the conference in 1999.

HPU had an all-time high four players named All-Big South, as Hilaire Babou and Chris Shrum made the first team and Adam Hatem and Scott Rojo were named to the second team. HPU tightened its defense over a half-goal per game from 2007 to 2008, in large part due to Big South All-Freshman selection Michael Chesler in goal. Chesler was joined on the All-Freshman squad by forward Karo Okiomah and midfielder Will Stewart.

Fonder is entering his third season as head coach of the High Point University Panthers. In two seasons, he has amassed a record of 14-22-4. Fonder joined the High Point staff in December of 2006 after having served as the assistant coach at Elon for the previous four seasons. While with the Phoenix, Fonder helped with recruiting, scheduling and academic advising. He helped to build Elon’s men’s soccer program from an RPI of 165 in 2004 to its first ever top-25 national ranking in the 2006 season.

Prior to his time at Elon, Fonder served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Roanoke College. He was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, fund raising and academic advising. He coached the 1998, 2001 and 2002 Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions. While with the Maroons, Fonder coached thirty All-ODAC players, three ODAC Rookies of the Year and two ODAC Players of the Year.

A 1994 graduate of Roanoke College, Fonder was a member of the Maroons’ men’s soccer team where he was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year. Following his collegiate career, Fonder played professionally both in the USISL and the NPSL from 1995-1999.

In addition to playing for the Roanoke College soccer team, Fonder also starred for the men’s basketball team and is still the all-time assists leader. For all of his athletic talents Fonder was inducted in to the Roanoke College Hall of Fame in 2006.

Fonder is also very involved in the development of the game. He serves as the techincal director for the Piedmont Triad Football club. He also is a head coach for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (’94 boys).

Fonder has been married to his wife Kim for one year. The couple resides in High Point with their daughter Dakota and dog, Kobe.

John Trice is entering his second season as the assistant men’s soccer coach at High Point University. In his first year, he helped head coach Dustin Fonder continue to upgrade the HPU program, and the team posted a 9-8-3 overall record and 4-2-2 Big South record – team bests since joining NCAA Div. I in 1999.

Trice serves as the recruiting coordinator for HPU men’s soccer and also assists with all the day-to-day operations of the team, including practice planning, academic advising and scheduling. He was largely responsible for the Panthers’ highly-rated 2009 recruiting class.

Trice came to HPU after serving as assistant coach at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. While there, Trice assisted in leading the men’s soccer team to an 8-6-4 overall record, going undefeated in the Patriot League (4-0-3). The Crusaders earned the Patriot League regular-season championship. Known for their stingy defense throughout the season, the Crusaders allowed the second fewest goals in school history (16).

The Chattanooga, Tenn. native is a 2004 graduate of James Madison University where he was a four-year letterwinner, two-year starter and served as captain for the Dukes. Trice was a member of the 2000 and 2001 NCAA tournament teams as well as the 2001 Colonial Athletic Association All-Tournament team. He was a three-time Verizon Scholar-Athlete and heavily involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Trice currently resides in High Point, N.C.

Zac Gibbens is the latest addidtion to Coach Fonder’s staff. The 2009 season will be Gibbens’ first at HPU. Gibbens’ primary responsibilities will be training the goalkeepers as well as assisting in scouting, recruiting, academic support and all other day-to-day operations.

The Loveland, Colo., native comes to HPU after spending the past season at Dayton as the goalkeeper coach. He was responsible for developing and imple-menting the goalkeeper training program for UD, in addition to assisting with recruiting efforts. Gibbens tutored redshirt-freshman Tyler Picard to two Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards, a 0.97 goals against average and a 13-2-2 record. Gibbens graduated from Dayton in 2007. In his senior season, Gibbens went 10-4-5 with six shutouts between the pipes, earning him All-Atlantic 10 honorable mention honors. Dayton’s 2007 Defensive Player of the Year, he was one of four A-10 goalkeepers who played every minute in net for his team and finished his career second on UD’s all-time goals against average with a mark of 0.89.

Prior to Dayton, Gibbens spent three seasons at Creighton. After redshirting his first year, he went on to make three starts and appeared in five matches. His first collegiate start came against No. 23 Tulsa on October 3, 2004 where he made five saves in a 4-0 shutout. He did not allow a goal in his first 219:40 minutes of collegiate play.

Gibbens holds a National Diploma with the National Soccer Coaches Associa-tion of America. He currently resides in High Point, N.C.

The Richard F. Vert Track and Soccer Stadium is one of the finest facilities of its kind, with the perfect size and amenities for soccer, track & field and lacrosse. Reopened in the spring of 2007, the stadium features seating for 1,100, a press box, hospitality suite, rest rooms and a consession stand. It has an oversize scoreboard with full video and graphic capabilities.

The natural turf field is ideal for men’s and women’s soccer and Vert Stadium will also be home of HPU women’s lacrosse in its first season of 2011.

The modern track has field event areas for the high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put and javelin. The track is composed of an IAAF-certified Beynon surface. It has the widest radius turns that IAAF allows, making it ideal for fast times, particularly in the long sprint events.

The stadium hosted Big South Championships for wom-en’s soccer in 2003 and 2008 and men’s soccer in 2005 and will once again host the men’s soccer championship in 2009. In the spring of 2009, the track & field team hosted its first home meet at the new facility.

High Point University Panthers

22 2009 HPU Panthers

The 2008 season proved to be the most successful in 10 years of Division I competition for the High Point University men’s soccer team. Under head coach Dustin Fonder, the team recorded its first win-ning season since 1997 and its first ever in Division I play, finishing with a 9-8-3 record. After going 4-2-2, HPU earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tour-nament, equaling its highest seed and win total in Big South play. The team also received its first ever votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America South Region Poll in week five.

The Panthers earned two wins over ACC schools in one season for the first time in school history, defeat-ing both NC State and Virginia Tech, and defeated the Big South regular season champion Winthrop Eagles for just the second time in school history.

One of the reasons for the dramatic improvement was High Point’s dominance at home. The Panthers went 6-1-2 at home with wins over such teams as Virginia Tech, Appalachian State and Elon.

Four players earned All-Big South honors in 2008, the most in HPU’s 10-year history in the Big South Conference. Senior Chris Shrum and junior Hilaire Babou both received first team honors while sopho-mores Adam Hatem and Scott Rojo were named to the second team. In addition, freshmen Michael Chesler, Karo Okiomah and Will Stewart were named to the All-Freshman team and Hatem was selected to the All-Academic team.

Shrum finished his High Point career as one of High Point’s most decorated offensive players in the Di-vision I era. His 25 points in 2008 were the third-highest single-season total in Division I play, while his

nine assists tied the school’s Division I record. For his career, he finished with 40 points, which is the third-highest mark in the program’s Division I history. The senior finished the season leading the Big South in assists and in the top five in the conference in both goals and points.

Several freshmen emerged as impact players for the Panthers in 2008 including Shrum’s partner up top, Okiomah, who proved to be a legitimate scoring threat early in his career with two goals in his first two collegiate games. Okiomah ended the season sec-ond on the team in goals, with five, and points, with 11. Chesler played all but 45 minutes in 2008 and solidified a backline that allowed over half a goal less per game than the 2007 squad. His 1.37 goals-against average was second-best in a single-season and career since HPU joined Division I.

regular seasonHigh Point opened its season on Aug. 29 with a 2-1 victory over regional-rival Elon University. The win was the first for the Panthers over Elon since 2000. HPU fell behind early after allowing a goal in just the second minute of play, but Shrum managed to find an equalizer in the 29th minute before Okiomah net-ted the game-winner just one minute later. The Pan-thers limited Elon to five shots on goal, displaying an improved defense which would continue throughout the season.

Following its season-opening win over Elon, High Point traveled to Harrisonburg, Va., to compete in the JMU Invitational. The team fought hard in each of its two games but dropped them both by one goal margins, losing to Wofford in double overtime, 3-2, and to Mount St. Mary’s by a score of 2-1. HPU out-shot both opponents on the weekend, besting Wof-

ford by a margin of 14-9 and Mount St. Mary’s by a margin of 17-11.

The team returned home on Sept. 10 to host the Lancers of Longwood. The two teams battled through two overtimes but neither could find the net as the game finished in a 0-0 tie. The shutout was the first of Chesler’s collegiate career. The Panthers then con-cluded the weekend with a 3-2 win over Davidson. The team trailed, 2-1, late but scored two goals in the final 3:53 of play to pick up the win. Freshman Deon-Cuffie Joseph, who scored the game-tying goal, and senior Michael Earman, who scored the game-winning goal, both picked up their first collegiate goals in the match.

High Point continued to ride its hot streak the next weekend with a 2-1 win over Appalachian State, the first loss of the year for the Mountaineers. Rojo and Babou each scored for the Panthers, who at that point had seven different players with at least one goal on the season.

HPU’s three-game unbeaten streak came to an end three days later when the team fell to East Tennessee State by a score of 2-0. The team outshot the Buc-caneers 14-11 but was unable to put one in the back of the net.

In the fifth week of the season, High Point picked up two wins, including its first conference win of the season, matching its overall and conference win totals from 2007. The team began the week with a win over NC State, HPU’s first since 2001. Shrum provided the game-winner with just 56 seconds left in over-time off a cross from Rojo. Chesler made four saves against the ACC side, including a diving save with 30 seconds remaining in first half. The Panthers then

2009 Men’s Soccerreturned home to open their conference slate with a win over Gardner-Webb. Babou scored the lone goal of the match to record his fourth goal in as many games and his second game winner of the season. The win pushed High Point’s record at home to 3-0-1.

With a record of 4-1-1 in its previous six games, High Point received votes in the NSCAA regional rankings for the first time in their Division I history. Unfortu-natly, the Panthers were unable to sustain their mo-mentum, losing at Liberty by a score of 3-1. Shrum scored the lone goal for HPU who dropped to 1-1 in conference play.

High Point dropped its second straight match with a 2-0 loss at local rival UNC Greensboro. It was only the team’s second game in two weeks after their con-test with Winthrop was postponed earlier in the week due to inclement weather.

HPU stopped the losing skid at two games with a 2-1 win at home over Radford. Shrum scored the game-winning goal, while Okiomah scored his first goal since returning from a month-long injury. The Panthers were forced to settle for a split on the week though, after dropping an overtime contest to Coastal Carolina by a score of 1-0. Chesler had an outstand-ing game in goal with eight saves in the loss.

High Point pulled back above .500 the following week by going 1-0-1 with a 2-2 tie against Presbyterian and a 2-1 win over Virginia Tech, the second win of the season over an ACC school. Against Presbyterian, the Panthers fell behind 2-0 but rallied to tie the game. Okiomah scored his second goal since returning from his injury and freshman Will Stewart provided the equalizer with his first collegiate goal. HPU contin-ued its strong performances at home with its win over Virginia Tech pushing the team’s record to 5-0-1 in

Vert Stadium. Shrum scored his team-leading sixth goal, which proved to be the game-winner with 2:50 remaining in the first half.

High Point stretched its unbeaten streak to four in a row with two positive results during week eight. The team tied UNC Asheville, 1-1, and defeated VMI, 2-1. In the first contest, Okiomah gave the Panthers the early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute, but UNCA came back and scored 43 seconds later to knot the game. In the second game of the week the Panthers were forced to rally back against VMI after the Keydets scored first in the 31st minute. HPU scored the final two goals of the match with sophomore Justin Pruetz providing the equalizer with 33 sec-onds remaining in the first half and junior Matt Tuttle netting the game-winner with just three seconds left in the contest. HPU allowed only one shot after giving up the goal to VMI holding a 20-4 advantage in the match.

In the final week of the regular season, High Point split a pair of contests to finish 9-7-3. The team lost its first home match of the season, dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 24-ranked Campbell but recovered to defeat Winthrop, 2-0. In the final regular season game of his college career, Shrum netted both goals for HPU, the first coming in the 42nd minute off a volley from Rojo and the second in the 88th minute on a penalty kick. The win was the Panthers’ fifth come-from-behind victory of the season.

PostseasonHigh Point’s 4-2-2 conference record was the best in the school’s 10 years in the Big South

and it gave them the No. 4 seed in the Big South Tournament. The Panthers were matched against the fifth-seeded Liberty Flames, who during the regular season beat HPU, 3-1, on Sept. 30. The Panthers struck first as Tuttle took a pass from Shrum and bent it to the far post in just the sixth minute of play, but the team was unable to hold the lead as Liberty scored twice in the second half to take a lead that it would not relinquish.

e BiG SOUTH COnFerenCeSince its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference

has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, ac-tively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the class-room. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partner-ships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intention-ally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charles-ton Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retir-ing Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the league received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic quali-fier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the confer-ence to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the league as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinc-tive athletic conference committed to the quality of institutional life through

athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002. Conference membership has been solidified with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell Uni-

versity. Kallander’s long range vision has also included tech-nological advancements, as the conference introduced its first live event video stream-ing in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events an-nually through a partnership

with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the conference has had two individual national champions, more than 200 All-Ameri-cans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national top-25 rank-ings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Champion-ship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence.

The conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the conference’s 25th Anniversary. The league also honored its

heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball champi-onship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years.

The conference’s on-field accom-plishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presi-dential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.www.BigSouthSports.com

High Point University President

dr. nidO QUBeinDr. Nido Qubein believes in creating significance – both in

his own life and in the lives he touches. He is a man of diverse interests and talents, and uses the life God has given him to cre-ate a legacy that reaches far and wide. Dr. Qubein came to the United States as a teenager with little knowledge of English, no contacts and only $50 in his pocket. His life has been an amazing success story.

Having graduated from High Point University in 1970, it is poetic that Dr. Qubein would be pursued as its seventh president in 2005. He immediately began a campaign to transform the uni-versity, with $300 million being invested in academic programs, student life and facilities. HPU has completed or is constructing 15 new buildings and two stadiums, in addition to renovating 27 other structures on campus. That includes all athletic facilities, with the construction of the Steele Center, Vert Stadium and Wil-lard Stadium, and the renovation of the Millis Center. The HPU campus has grown from 90 acres to 180 acres. Most recently, the University Center, the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce and the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication were opened to students. Dr. Qubein also teaches a required course called The President’s Seminar on Life Skills, teaching freshmen how to de-velop such skills as self-esteem, leadership, communication and time management.

Dr. Qubein is the recipient of the highest awards given for professional speakers including the Cavett (known as the Oscar of professional speaking), the Speakers Hall of Fame, Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans and The Order of the Long Leaf Pine (North Carolina’s highest civilian honor) and Sales and Marketing International’s Ambassador of Free Enterprise. Toastmasters International named him the Top Business and Commerce Speaker and awarded him the Golden Gavel Medal. He served as president of the National Speakers Association, which has a membership of 4,000 professionals, and is the founder of the National Speakers Association Foundation, where the highest award for Philanthropy is named for him. Dr. Qubein has been the recipient of many honors including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and induction into Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for business leadership.

Dr. Qubein’s business savvy led him to help start a bank in 1986 and today he serves on the board and chairs the executive committee of BB&T, a Fortune 500 financial corporation with $130 billion in assets and 30,000 employees. He is also chairman of Great Harvest Bread Company, which has 218 stores in 42 states, and he serves on the board of La-Z-Boy Corporation, one of the world’s largest and most recognized furniture retailers. He is a former board member of the YMCA of the USA, which oversees 2,600 YMCAs across the country.

Dr. Qubein has written a dozen books and recorded scores of audio and video learning programs. His books are translated in 20 languages and sold worldwide. He is an active speaker and consultant addressing business and professional groups.

His foundation provides scholarships to 48 deserving young people each year. To-date the Qubein Foundation has granted more than 600 scholarships, worth over $4 million.

ACAdeMiCS AT HiGH POinT UniverSiTYThe most important thing to consider in choosing a college or university

is the institution’s expectation of its faculty. Good professors are actively in-volved in both teaching and scholarly activity, such as research, but institutions and their faculties tend to give priority to one or to the other. In a recently completed study, the prestigious Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching concluded that often, at the research institutions, “undergradu-ates are seriously neglected,” in part because they are often taught by graduate students. By contrast, at High Point, you will be taught by career teachers who care about students. Currently, 78 percent of the faculty have doctorates or other terminal degrees; others have one or more master’s degrees.

Although High Point University is an academic institution, your educa-tion is not complete if, in the process of learning, you have not inculcated moral values without which success in life and work is at risk. Therefore, the University emphasizes the teaching of ethics across the curriculum, and all degree candidates must successfully complete at least one course in ethics. Options include Business Ethics; Christian Ethics; Ethics in Professionalism for Accounting; Ethical Conflicts in Information Technology; Environmental Ethics; Ethical Traditions; Faith, Ethics, and Wholeness; Families, Values, and Ethics; and Social Ethics.

2009 Men’s Soccer

Craig Keilitz was named High Point University’s Athletic Director in January 2008 and, since then, the HPU Athletic Department has undergone un-precedented change.

With Keilitz’s guidance, High Point Athletics has undergone a complete evaluation of all aspects of the department and its various programs with goals of operational efficiency, extraordinary service and championship performance on the top of his list.

An energetic and enthusiastic leader, Keilitz’s first major project was a $2 million inside renovation of the Millis Athletic Center, which included a new playing floor, all new chair-back seats throughout the arena, a fourth video board, a new center hung scoreboard and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. Keilitz continues to assess HPU’s athletic facilities in order to provide the best resources for the Panthers’ student-athletes and coaches.

The Panthers have added women’s lacrosse as a varsity sport, and HPU’s first season of competition will be 2011. In his short tenure, Keilitz has made coaching staff changes in men’s basketball, baseball, women’s soccer and volleyball, and has added several new members to the administrative team.

The change in the Athletic Department is already paying dividends, as High Point University recorded its highest-ever finish – third place – in the Big South Conference Sasser Cup standings during the 2008-09 athletic season.

Keilitz joined HPU following a long stint at Wake Forest

University, where he served as an Associate Athletic Director. Keilitz began at Wake Forest in 1996 when he was hired as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. After two years, Athletic Director Ron Wellman promoted Keilitz to Associate Athletic Di-rector for Internal Operations, where he supervised the NCAA compliance office, the sports medicine and equipment operations as well as strength and conditioning and event management.

In 2001, Keilitz was promoted again as Wake Forest’s Associate Athletic Director, supervising the

marketing and promotions, media relations and facilities opera-tions while also overseeing the baseball and women’s volleyball programs. Under Keilitz’s supervision, Wake Forest football set season attendance records in five of six seasons.

Keilitz started his career in college athletics at the University of Michigan in 1993 and was promoted to Director of Compli-ance in 1995.

A native of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Keilitz earned his bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in marketing from Central Michigan University in 1991. He was a member of the Chippewas baseball team. Keilitz received his master’s in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992.

Keilitz resides in High Point with his wife Jane, who works as a physician’s assistant at Johnson Neurological Clinic in High Point. His daughter, Lauren, is a junior at High Point University in 2009-10.

High Point University’s Athletics Compli-ance office monitors and verifies compliance with all NCAA, Big South Conference and University requirements. The office educates not only the athletics staff, administration and student-athletes, but also HPU faculty, staff and administration as well as other individuals and entities with athletic interests.

HPU is committed and compelled to the principle of institutional control in the opera-tion of its athletics department in a way that is consistent within the rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big South and HPU.

Everyone involved with High Point Ath-letics, both inside and outside the University, has a role and responsibility to operate with accountability and integrity when it comes to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. Communication is the key when it comes to understanding how each person fits within the structure of the NCAA’s rules and regulations.

Any questions regarding NCAA rules and regulations, especially those dealing with pros-pects and student-athletes, should be directed toward Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Mike Tuttle at (336) 841-4518 or [email protected]. The HPU Athletic program needs your help and support, so please cooperate to ensure success for the Panthers, on and off the field.

nCAA rules and regulations for“representatives of Athletics interests”

The High Point University Athletic Depart-ment in conjunction with the HPU Compliance Office strives for honor and dignity of fair play and the highest standards associated with inter-collegiate athletic programs. “Representatives of Athletics Interests,” which include alumni, boosters, and friends of High Point University all have a key role in maintaining our standards under the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Relationships are easily formed with HPU student-athletes as fans watch and cheer them on in their competitions. Building these types of relationships is not only exciting for the fans but also important in the lives of the student-athletes.

There are many NCAA rules and regula-tions regarding the eligibility of student-athletes. ask before you act! Make sure that anything you provide for a student-athlete is within the

NCAA’s guidelines. Speak with Senior Associate Athletic Director Mike Tuttle at (336) 841-4518 or [email protected].

Some Helpful FactsOnly coaches and athletic department staff mem-bers are permitted to be involved in recruiting...

Alumni, friends and other “representatives of athletics interests” (usually boosters) who are not employed by the University are not permit-ted to contact a prospect or members of the pros-pect’s family by letter, telephone or in-person for the purpose of soliciting their participation in the athletic program. High Point University faculty members are allowed to have contact with prospects, but only while on the campus during unofficial or official visits.A student-athlete becomes a prospect...

A student-athlete becomes a prospect when he or she begins ninth grade classes. Before the ninth grade, a student-athlete becomes a prospect if a college provides any financial aid or other benefits to the student-athlete (or their relatives or friends) that the college does not provide to all prospective students.

A student-athlete is considered a “recruited” prospect at a particular college if any coach or representative of the school’s athletics interest (booster or representative) approaches a student-athlete or any member of their family about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that cause a student-athlete to become a recruited prospect are:

• Providing the student-athlete with an of-ficial visit

• Placing more than one telephone call to the student-athlete or any other member of their family

• Visiting the student-athlete or any other member of their family anywhere other than on the college’s campus

This information was prepared by the High Point Athletic Compliance Office and is presented to you as a guide to assist you with any questions you may have. There are many more NCAA rules and regulations that are not contained here. If you are ever unsure regarding your involvement with our prospects or current student-athletes, please contact Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Mike Tuttle at (336) 841-4518 or [email protected].

PLAYer deveLOPMenTAcademic Support

The Academic Support Program works to provide student-athletes with the resources to excel academically during their participation in intercollegiate athletics. The services offered by the Academic Support Program seek to reinforce the University’s overall mission to promote intellectual and personal growth.

Student-athletes have the same academic responsi-bilities as all other students, but they also must devote significant time and energy to athletics participation. The Department of Athletics Academic Support Program of-fers various services to assist student-athletes with these responsibilities; however all student-athletes are ulti-mately personally responsible for following a course of academic study that will lead to a degree.

HPU’s Student-Athlete Learning Assistance Cen-ter in the Steele Center gives all Panther student-athletes access to top-notch academic resources and amenities. The center is equipped with multiple desktop computer stations, wireless in-ternet capabilities, a small group work area and tutor offices. The center also serves as the location for all of HPU’s study hall ses-sions.

CHAMPS/Life SkillsThe NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Pro-

gram is an educational program designed to enhance the welfare and promote the personal development of student-athletes. High Point University Athletics seeks to benefit the student-athletes by focusing upon their unique academic, athletic, and emotional objectives and needs.

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Commitment Statements are as follows:

• Commitment to Academic Excellence: To support the aca-demic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual de-velopment and graduation.

• Commitment to Athletic Excellence: To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.

• Commitment to Personal Development: To support the de-velopment of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and de-cision-making skills.

• Commitment to Career Development: To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.

• Commitment to Service: To engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities.

Competition CupA critical component of the Life Skills Program is the Com-

petition Cup, a competitive contest among the High Point Uni-versity athletic teams. Student-athletes compete on behalf of

their teams for points in various categories. The categories are based upon Life Skills commitment areas:

• Being an active role model and leader• Working as a team• Encouragement for fellow athletes• Overall academic achievement

The Competition Cup enables and encourages investment in the self (academic performance category), fellow student-athletes (athletes supporting athletics, Student-Athlete Advisory Com-mittee, Student-Athlete Mentors, and athletic performance cat-egories), and community outreach. The team that has the highest total at the end of the academic year prevails as the winner.

Student-Athlete Advisory CommitteeThe Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a group

made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Each of High Point’s 15 athletic teams have a representative on the HPU SAAC.

High Point University offers a compre-hensive strength & conditioning program that provides a combination of strength and speed in a safe manner that will enable HPU student-athletes to be the strongest, fastest, and most explosive collegiate athletes in the nation. The Panthers’ strength & conditioning program is led by head coach Tim Teefy, who joined HPU in 2009.

The profession of strength & conditioning is constantly changing and evolving, and Teefy stays on the cutting edge and uses the most innovative practices avail-able. Using any means necessary within the scope of strength & con-ditioning that will improve the performance of the athlete in a positive manner is what High Point University strength & conditioning is all about.

The following six areas are the focal points of High Point Univer-sity’s strength & conditioning program:

• STRENGTH: Olympic lifting techniques are one of the most wide-ly used by strength & conditioning coaches all over the country. These lifts teach the athlete advanced movements while putting the muscular skeletal system under stress and creating positive adapta-tions. This will mirror the stress the athlete undergoes during com-petition.

• POWER & EXPLOSION: Power is the ability to generate large amounts of force at a high rate of speed. Explosiveness is the ability to generate power in a short amount of time. These two principles can be applicable to every athlete regardless of sport or position.

• FLEXIBILITY: Static, dynamic and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation are the three main components of flexibility. Using these three methods helps prevent injury, improve muscle activation, pre-vents delayed onset muscle soreness, and increases range of motion.

• SPEED & AGILITY: Speed training is used to enhance the ath-lete’s ability to get from point A to B as fast as possible. It involves teaching the athlete proper body mechanics to optimize sprinting performance. Agility is the ability to own a certain amount of space around you. An athlete must be able to react as quickly as possible in all directions for any type of situation. Spatial awareness and mus-cular coordination play major roles in agility training.

• CORE: Core training in recent years has become a major part of strength training for the athlete. “If you want to be strong on the outside, you must be strong on the inside.” The core consists of 36 muscles in and around the abdominal area and lower back region.

• NUTRITION: A training body can only perform as long as it’s get-ting an adequate supply of fuel. An athlete’s calorie intake is under high demand during a full training cycle. Athletes need adequate calories from all major food groups and minerals that will keep the athlete at optimal training performance.

High Point University strength & conditioning utilizes weight rooms in both the Steele Center and Millis Center, and HPU’s coaches and student-athletes also have access to the Panthers’ practice fields as well as Belk Track for strength & conditioning activities.

High Point University is committed to providing the best op-portunities for its student-athletes, both on and off the field, and one of the most important aspects of any quality athletic department is its athletic training program. Headed by Matt Schooler, HPU’s top-notch athletic training staff handles the day-to-day, minute-by-minute demands placed on the human body. The responsibilities of HPU’s athletic trainers are key to player development.

Schooler and each of HPU’s assistant athletic trainers are certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) and licensed by the State of North Carolina. With locations in both the Millis Center and Steele Center, HPU’s athletic trainers provide compre-hensive sports medicine services for HPU’s intercollegiate athletes as well as visiting team athletes, including injury prevention, support and rehabilitation for injured athletes, as well as medical emergency management. All of HPU’s athletic trainers are qualified to react to spontaneous, on-the-field injuries, manage and treat them, and, when it is necessary, follow through on athletes’ comprehensive reha-bilitation programs under a physician’s direction.

The coaching staffs of the Panthers’ 15-sport, women’s and men’s athletics program rely heavily on the input of Schooler and his staff as they prepare lineups for games and analyze depth charts for future seasons.

MATT SCHOOLerHead Athletic Trainer

Matt Schooler is High Point University’s head athletic trainer, a post he assumed in 2009. Schooler joined the HPU athletic train-ing staff in August 2003 and has worked ex-tensively with the entire athletic program at High Point. He currently oversees coverage for the Panthers’ men’s basketball team and men’s and women’s golf teams in addition to super-vising athletic training for all 15 varsity sports at HPU.

Schooler earned his undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine from Eureka College in 2001. He was a four-year member of the Red Devils golf team. He earned his master’s degree in Secondary Educa-tion at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. A native of Georgetown, Ill., Schooler resides in High Point with his fiance, Lisa.
