(Michele salutes Dave and says at ease Dave)

Hey speaking of buttons! You may have noticed some folks wearing Ask me about Regional Council buttons. They are your Regional Council Chairs. Will these chairs please stand to be recognized? I also want to mention some folks we have here at Summit this year. Your Regional Council Training Chairs are here to help take the information back to implement at Relay Us.

Back to the 5 Star Challenge. As you may remember two years ago the 20-07 Challenge was issued. You accepted this challenge with eagerness and the outcome was more committees, more teams, more mission than ever before. We commend you for taking on the 20-07 Challenge.

We are here today with a NEW challenge? (add in the leadership adjectives)

Who here likes a challenge?Who wants to strengthen the core of their Relay?Who likes being recognized for being outstanding?

Thats what I thought lets get down to business

So why a 5 Star Challenge?

The challenge is designed to strengthen the core of Relay by focusing on Advocacy, Fight Back, Fundraising, Standards and Survivorship

Its our job as volunteers to achieve the challenge, which well go over the Five Stars in a moment. Its our staff partners job to capture the data behind the scenes. That is where the staff/volunteer partnership comes into play.

Although the program is designed to recognize our outstanding Relaysits achievable for each and every event.

These are our core areas of focus. By developing each of these 5 core areas our Relays are sure to be positioned for success. Lets talk thru each of the core areas.

(Refer them to the large brochures on their tables ask them to follow along)(Feel free to ad-lib as you wish) (Summit attendees will hear more about ACS CAN after lunch on Saturday)

(Note: summit attendees can look forward to a Fight Back panel on Sunday to learn more about how to hold a dynamic fight back ceremony at their events)

Mission Moments for your meetings can be located on relayforlife.org

Who here held a Fight Back ceremony? Its hard to imagine a relay without a fight back cermemony. It would be like having a relay without a luminaria ceremony!

(NOTE: The 5 breakouts at the 2008 Summit are focused on fundraising.. ) (They will learn more about fundraising club at the experience / interactive breakout )

Not everyone that attends your team captain meetings knows how to fundraise so we need to teach them the how tos and give them ideas and each and EVERY team captain meeting. A focus on fundraising is essential.Fundraising Club is a recognition program that is ZERO cost to your event. Fundraising Club excitement is contagious and it starts with the committees enthusiasm. Last but not least to achieve the 5 Star Challenge your relay needs to strive for an increase over last years net $ total. Survivorship Its what Relay is all about. Recognizing the survivors in our communities! These standards are detailed in your brochure.

Be sure to stop by the Survivorship Expo this afternoon to learn more)

(NOTE: Might review what the Natl standards are.. Overnight means dusk to dawn MINIMUM 12 HOURSHold Opening, Luminaria, and Closing ceremoniesHave survivorship and mission activitiesTobacco and alcohol free environment.Ask team/participant commitment feesAdhere to National graphic standards so this means not turning the Relay logo Pink ha ha.

Branding Points refers to Relay banners and signage at and leading up to your event.I cant give away the details but after lunch you will hear more about how your event will be provided resources to brand your event.

Hopefully the relayers are familiar with the Emergency procedure kits. This protects both you and the Society. The checklist can be found in the Emergency Procedure Kit.Easy enough?... So with a round of applause show me who wants to be a Five Star Relay?

We know its achievable. Now we have to create a plan, put it into action and achieve the challenge!

You may have noticed these sail banners on display behind me. One of these sail banners could BE YOUR VERY OWN simply by achieving this 5 star challenge. Yes I said your Relay could have their VERY OWN sail banner!!! Those are great!! Each relay that meets this challenge will also be recognized as a Five Star Relay at next years Summit!

To find out more information and view the supporting documents, visit RelayForLife.org and go to the High Plains page. Locate the folder Five Star Challenge.

Please wear your button throughout the year at team captain meetings, etc. At Relay U your committee will also receive a 5 Star Sticker and brochures so they can be on board as you move forward with your action plan. But only the folks here get the buttons!

Thank you for your time and attention have a great Summit!!

Salute Dave as the army music plays again
