2.1 BODY
Bodies of 23 series valves have a large stream
- flow guiding design that allows both high
capacity solutions and very flexible flow
characterization with the right trim
characteristic selection.
Cast bodies are the standard of
construction, but for the smallest size,
that means up to 3’’ (DN 80), solutions by
wrought or bar steels can be provided.
Forged bodies can be taken into account
for special applications, such as bodies
with integral internal overlays.
23 series are available with all sizes from
1’’ (DN 25) up to 24’’(DN 600).
All ratings can be provided from ASME 150
up to ASME 2500.
Special constructions on request.
Mechanical design is according ASME
B16.34.
Face to face dimensions are available as
per IEC 60534 and ANSI-ISA 75.
Refer to overall weights and dimensions
paragraph.
All types of end connections can be provided
as per ASME design: refer to product
specification section.
Raised face, ring Joint, butt-welded, socket
welded and threaded types are available.
Flow direction: 23 series has a flow to open
design as a standard feature.
This standard design shall be considered
unidirectional in flow behavior. Nevertheless,
customized solutions can be engineered to
offer flow to close possibilities. Piloted plug
solutions are always associated to a flow to
close design instead, that makes possible to
realize tight shut off applications.
Materials of constructions depend on the
combination of fluid type, pressure rating and
design temperature.
Wide range of Carbon, Stainless and Cr-Mo
Steels allow covering any customer
requirement.
Exotic materials are available.
For rating tables, refer to product spec. section.
For material choice, refer to material selection guide.

2.2 BONNET
Cast, forged or rolled steels are used for bonnet raw
material, depending on the valve body features: as a
standard of construction, bonnet material is the same of
body.
For material choice, refer to material selection guide.
In standard design bonnet has a bolted joint connection
with body.
23 series bonnet can be properly extended type for best
performances also in the most severe applications.
Standard plain bonnet.
For applications where the temperature of the controlled
fluid is between -30 ˚C [2O ˚F] and 600 °C [644 °F].
Although modern graphite packages are suitable for these
high temperatures, we reserve the possibility to suggest
a proper extension on the basis of specific applications
and materials used.
Extended bonnet for high, low and CRYO
temperatures up to -196°C [-321 ˚F].
The bonnet is designed with a long necked section which
distances the packing away from the process fluid.
The necked section is designed with a minimum
wall section to optimize heat transfer.
EXTENDED BONNET FOR CRYO SERVICE
STANDARD PLAIN BONNET
Extended bonnet for bellow seal application.
It’s adopted in leakproof stem seal for cases where no
gland leakage is admittable.
The design consists of welded flexible steel bellows which
are clamped in an extended bonnet. This effectively
eliminates any possible leakage path around the plug stem
thus preventing dangerous emissions from the valve
packings. In this applications packing only act as a backup
to the bellows.

3.1 TRIM COMPONENTS
Different plug and seat constructions associated with many cage configurations make 23 series perfectly suit
any application and any requirement, also the most severe ones.
23 series trim has been engineered to effectively face up and solve cavitation and noise matters, even in
presence of dirty, corrosive, sticking or slightly abrasive fluids.
3.1.1 PLUG
Plug is always heavy guided and can be customized
where necessary.
Plug materials of constructions depend on the
combination of fluid type, pressure rating and
design temperature and shall be carefully selected
together with the materials of the other trim
components.
Refer to material section guide for standard
materials of construction.
Special treatments are available such as stellite
overlay…
Balanced construction.
The balanced construction allows as a standard a flow
to open application (flow under the plug head).
Customized solutions can be adopted for flow to close
applications.
A pressure balanced design of the plug doesn’t have
any practical limitation in term of pressure drop and
allow a reduction of the thrust required at the
actuator, that means a reduction of the actuator size.
Balanced construction make also very smooth and
efficient regulation of the controlled process. This is
the reason why it can be considered the best solution
in a great variety of applications. The cylindrical plug
head is drilled with large balancing ports to lead
pressure above the plug head.
The annular leakage flow between the valve plug and
cage is avoided by a sealing ring located within a plug
groove. The standard construction allows a flow to
open application (flow under the plug).

Unbalanced.
The unbalanced construction is suitable for
bidirectional flow action (flow to open - under the
plug head- and flow over the plug). This solid design
is suitable for application with moderate pressure
drops.
It should usually considered for smaller ports ,up to
6’’ [DN 150] and/or for on/off service rather than
regulating control valves. In this latter case the
possibility to shift to 22 series should be considered.
Our technical department will evaluate the feasibility
of this option to offer you the best performances
with the easiest solution, which means the lowest
cost.
23 SERIES - UNBALANCED PLUG
Pilot operated balanced plug.
When a pilot operated balanced plug is provided the flow direction must always be over the plug, that means from
outside towards inside the cage, as indicated by the arrow in following figures.
The pilot balanced plug design incorporates two plugs. The main plug has a larger diameter and is heavy cage
guided as for all 23 Series. The smaller pilot is situated inside the main plug. Pilot act as follow.
Opening of the valve is by the pilot plug which lifts from its seat prior of the main plug.
This action produces a flow passage to equalize the pressure above and below the valve plug thus:
reducing the fluid forces acting on the valve main plug through a pressure balanced operation;
preserving the main seat from damage occurring by initial high velocities: in fact the main seat is
undiscovered when the flow rate through the pilot plug seat is no more enough.
Closing of the valve allow inlet pressure to go above the plug thus obtaining an unbalanced behavior in
closing favor: the results is an high downward seat load and the only leakage path is across metal to
metal seating.
This special design is suitable for tight shut off applications, especially in high temperature conditions where a
resilient seal would not be applicable.

3.1.2 CAGE DESIGN
Cage has the following main purposes in 23 Series control valves:
The heavy guiding of the valve plug and an improvement of the dynamics of the flow.
The impingement of the jets with the valve cage produces a more stable downstream flow, thus obtaining a
smaller scale turbulence structure at the valve outlet and therefore a better dynamic stability.
Cage allow also to full guide the plug over its all stroke.
This make possible to reduce mechanical vibrations, thus obtaining an improvement in terms of reliability.
The definition of the flow characteristic curve.
Through the proper disposition and dimension of drilled holes on the cage design, it is possible to obtain
practically all the desired valve characteristic curves: linear, equal-percent, quick opening …
Anti-cavitation and noise abatement issues.
23 series have been developed with a co-axial cages design concept, in order to offer an engineered
solution to face up both cavitation and noise problems.
It is therefore possible to manufacture multistage trims suitable to face fluid cavitation and severe noise
abatement issues.
Cage materials of construction depend on the combination of fluid type, pressure rating and design temperature and
shall be carefully selected together with the materials of the other trim components
For material choice and surface treatments, refer to material selection guide.

SINGLE STAGE HIGH CAPACITY CAGE
3.1.2.2 NOISE REDUCTION: NOISE
CONTROL TRIMS (NCTrims 23)
As a regulating device, a control valve is a noise source.
In fact pressure waves produced by flow turbulences are
responsible of the aerodynamic noise, and it’s impossible
to control the flow of a fluid without introducing
turbulences.
Mechanical vibrations are too potential noise sources, but
they can be avoided with the good design of valve and
piping.
Aerodynamic noise is generally a problem to be faced
with gases and vapors rather than liquids. Liquids noise
matters depends on another more critical phenomenon:
the cavitation.
Besides noise power is related to the stream power of
mass fluid, that depends on the square of fluid velocity.
Moreover, gas/vapors velocities are much higher than
liquids
Liquid cages are therefore engineered to avoid primarily
cavitation: this allow also a reduction of generated noise,
which can be considered a secondary matter. Refer to
CCTrims section for anti-cavitation trim description.
23 Series cages has been engineered to offers three type
of solutions to face up efficiently noise matters, on the
basis of the physical greatness involved in generated
noise.
Single stage noise control cages (NCTrim 23ss):
a multipath approach to noise problem.
Multi stage multi path noise control cages
(NCTrim 23xs):
a multistage and multipath approach to noise
problem with co-axial cage design.
Multi stage-multi path noise control trim
(NCTrim 23 PRO):
a multistage and multipath approach to noise
problem with a multiple interposed disk pack
design.
This is the finest solution to noise control as
explained in related description section.

3.1.2.3 SINGLE STAGE MULTI-PATH
NOISE CONTROL CAGE (NCTrim 23ss)
Noise attenuation is obtained by breaking the flow into
a great number of multiple jets.
This is a multipath approach to noise reduction.
Physically a multipath trim make possible to decrease
the geometrical factor (Fd) of the valve and this permit
to shift the peak frequencies (fp) of the generated noise
to higher values not inside the human audible range
(that is 1000-8000Hz).
The higher will be noise peak frequencies respect to
piping ring frequencies (fr),the higher will be the noise
attenuation obtainable by the pipe itself (fp>fr).
Multipath approach is performed through a great
number of small diameter holes to maximize the flow
breaking into multiple jets.
Even if it could appear easy to design a single stage
cage it’s not trivial to engineer an efficient solution.
Holes diameters and disposition shall in fact be
optimized in order to respect flow jets independency,
without each other interferences: our experience and
our technical resources (R&D and CFD analysis) make
possible to offer the best noise abatement solutions
with the desired flow curve characteristic.
A noise reduction till 15 dB is possible with our
Single Stage Noise Control Trim (NCTrim 23ss)
SINGLE STAGE NOISE CONTROL CAGE (NCTrim 23ss)
3.1.2.4 MULTI STAGE-MULTI PATH
NOISE CONTROL (NCTrim 23xs)
Noise reduction can be achieved also with a different
technique: the multi-stage approach.
If the whole pressure drop is divided into multiple stages
of pressure reduction, it will be possible to change in
favor of a noise reduction the acoustic efficiency of the
valve. Small pressure drops p1/p2 make possible to
control fluid expansions and velocities keeping always
the last stage in sub-critical conditions, which is
mandatory for the noise abatement.
A single path multi stage trim will have a design very
similar to our CCTrim 23 Pro SP (refer to relative
description section 2.3.2.7): there will be a proper
coupling of multi-contoured plug and wider expansion
sections (towards the valve outlet) in order to create a
multistage labyrintic single path.
A single path multi stage approach itself would allow, if
well engineered, a considerable noise reduction.

This design has unfortunately some practical limitation.
First at all limitation to the number of feasible stages to
use and related to seat and stroke dimensions.
Furthermore, there are limitations to the obtainable
expansion section ratios to proper control the fluid
velocities. All these deeply reduce the above-mentioned
hypothetic benefits.
Multistage approach becomes very effective when it is
coupled together with the multipath one.
This is what happens in 23 Series multi stage-multi path
noise control cages, where you can obtain the benefits of
the two techniques.
The only limitations to obtainable benefits are
represented by - the feasible number of stages due to
the allowable dimensions and by the number of
independent path that is possible to realize, in order to
keep the geometrical factor Fd the higher possible for
enhanced noise reduction.
By using the co-axial design concept of the 23 Series
cages a lot of different solutions are available in order
to satisfy the most severe requirements about noise
level control, especially where high pressure drops are
requested
Double Stage Noise Control Trim (NCTrim 23ds)
Three stage Noise Control Trim (NCTrim 23ts)
A global noise reduction till 20-25 dB is possible even
with high pressure drops.
Where four or more stage are required, disk stack
solution is preferred to co-axial cage design.

3.1.2.5 CAVITATION CONTROL TRIM
(CCTrim 23xs)
Cavitation is a phenomenon that characterizes liquid flow
behavior when pressure value becomes lower than the
saturation Pv point.
When cavitation occurs, the liquid begins to flash and
vapour bubbles are generated. This condition is obtained
in the so called “vena contracta”, where the pressure
reach the lowest value -and the velocity reach the peak
values- before the recovery of pressure that occurs
downstream.
Pressure recover, quantified by the parameter FL in IEC
standards, cause the bubble implosion when the valve
outlet pressure becomes again higher than the vapor
pressure.
Bubbles collapse can seriously damage solid surfaces
because of the high amount of energy released with this
phenomenon.
Cavitation highly affects both performances (vibrations,
noise, etc) and reliability: metal surfaces undergo a
inevitable pitting damage if this process is not controlled.
In order to face up this problem is necessary to control
velocity by breaking the pressure drop into a convenient
amount of smaller pressure stages.
This is shown in the following.

The adoption of a multiple stage design allow to avoid
the cavitation beginning since the pressure is kept
always, in control, higher than the flashpoint limit.
Pressure drop controlled though multiple stages allow
also to govern also velocity fields in favor of fluid
stability and noise emission.
In order to control cavitation matters, 23 series can
make use of various single or multi stage cavitation
control trims:
Single Stage Cavitation Control Trim(CCTrim 23ss)
Double Stage Cavitation Control Trim(CCTrim 23ds)
Three stage Cavitation Control Trim(CCTrim 23ts)
TWO STAGE CAVITATION CONTROL TRIM (CCTrim 23ds)
THREE STAGE CAVITATION CONTROL TRIM
(CCTrim 23ts)
3.1.2.6 EXTREME CONTROL TRIMS
(NCTrim 23 PRO & CCTrim 23 PRO)
In extremely cases when 4 stages or more are required for
noise or cavitation control, a Disk Stack Multi Stage Trim
represents the finest solution for the best control. It’s
manufactured from a brazed stack of laser cut plates, the
combination of these plates obliges the fluid to pass through a
series of 90° turns in which the flow energy is dissipated and
the DP decreasing is controlled throughout all the trim.
Disc stack (4 stages and more) for noise control
(NCTrim 23 PRO)
Making reference to what explained in noise control trims
paragraphs (2.3.2.2.3 and 4) this solution represents the
optimal one for noise abatement. It incorporated both the
multipath and the multistage approaches without the
limitations of a multi- cage design. There are no theoretical
limits related with p1/p2 ratio, stage numbers or velocity
controls This design allows a total control of the flow for the
most severe noise requirements.
Disc stack (4 stages and more) for Cavitation control
(CCTrim 23 PRO)
When the pressure drop is very high Disk Stack represents as
well the optimal solution for cavitation control, making
possible to realize4 stage and much more thus obtaining a
controlled pressure drop across the valve also in the most
severe process conditions.

3.1.3 SEAT AND PLUG SEALING
SOLUTIONS
3.1.3.1 SEAT
The seating type depends on the required leakage class
for the valve, and it’s affected by the process conditions:
combination of fluid type, temperature and pressure are
always taken into account to offer the customer the
required performances.
Seat materials of construction depend on the above
mentioned combination and shall be carefully selected
together with the materials of the other trim components.
For material choice and special treatments (stellite
overlay,…) refer to material selection guide.
Two main type of seating solution are available.
Metal-to-metal seat
It’s the standard design. If process conditions are taken
into account during material selection of the seat, a
metal to metal seat doesn’t give any limitation in terms of
fluid type, pressure and temperature combination.
Leakage class up to class V can be achieved when
matched with a suitable plug sealing solution.
METAL TO METAL SEAT
Soft seat
Soft seat is available, where permitted by the process
conditions, to make possible achieve a leakage class up
to VI.
The design consists of a soft insert clamped between the
seat and the cage, with an additional safety O-Ring
placed on the bottom side of it.
Different insert materials can be provided to suit process
conditions: temperatures between -46°C [-50°F] up to
235°C [455 °F] are allowed.

3.1.3.3 PLUG SEALING (balanced plug construction)
When a balanced plug construction is provided, different plug sealing solutions are allowable in order to meet any
request in terms of leakage class.
Most typical solutions are reported in the following together with their temperature of application and leakage
performances achievable.
NB. For each sealing solution it’s very important to check the differential pressure value in relation to the working
temperatures: for max differential allowable pressures please refer to RMT Controls technical department.

3.2 PACKING
23 series have been developed with different suitable
packing solutions that make possible to control fugitive
emissions levels.
Due to the modulating service of a control valve packing
has been designed to allow adjustment over the service-life
of the valve.
Packing is designed to offer:
limitation in the loss of process fluid, thus
increasing efficiency;
reduction in environment contamination;
respect of the criteria of most restrictive
legislations, avoiding connected sanctions
Fire Safe design is allowable on request.
3.2.1 STANDARD LOW EMISSION PACKING
Low Emission (LEM) packing meets the criteria of ISO
15848-1: CC3 class.
It is made by a series of pre-formed braided rings PTFE or
GRAPHOIL based with two anti-extrusion terminal solid
rings.
PTFE based rings can be adopted from
-30 °C up to 200°C with a plain bonnet and from
-30°C up to 300 °C with an extended one;
max allowable pressure is 250 Barg.
GRAPHOIL based can be adopted from
-30 °C up to 600°C with a plain bonnet and from
-100°C up to 600 °C with an extended one;
there are no practical limitation in max allowable
pressure.
Furtherly it’s possible to introduce to standard design :
leak-off in order to provide the possibility of
measuring the emission level;
packing follower with a dual O-ring design
that allows very high performances with extremely
volatile gas.
3.2.2 LIVE LOADING LOW EMISSION
PACKING
Live Loading Low Emission packing (LL-LEM) can maintain
to optimal levels the leak performance practically during all
life service of the valve.
This is possible by the use of bellows springs that maintain
a constant sealing force within the packing box. The
results is constant low leakage performance with minimal
field adjustment.
3.2.3 BELLOW SEAL PACKING
Since 23 series are linear valves, they can be equipped
with Bellows Seal (BS-LEM) for low emission behavior. The
bellows seal concept isolate completely the stem from the
exterior environment, metallic bellows are welded to the
stem providing zero leak from the valve stem, in
compliance with ISO 15848-1 class A. The design includes
a leak-off detection port and a redundant packing box for
additional safety.
