The image on the front of the bulletin is a photograph of the Consecration stone of St.
James’. You will find the stone set into the wood paneling below the ‘epistle ‘ lectern.
The stone is a piece of the fabric of Canterbury Cathedral, presented to Fr. Cooper by
the Dean-Chapter of the Cathedral. It was carved by parishioner George Buxton. In the
wall behind the stone is a fragment of St. Augustine’s oak, the English tree beneath
which the Saint met the Celtic bishops in A.D. 603. -Father Michael

A Reflection
A reading from a homily by Origen (c. 185 – c. 254):
Each of our souls contains a well of living water. Within it is buried the image of God. It
is this same well that the hostile powers of the universe have blocked up with earth. But
now that our Isaac has appeared - I mean Christ - so let us welcome his coming and dig
out our wells, clearing out the earth and cleansing them of all impurities. In spite of all
the accumulated pollution, we shall find in them living water, water of which the Lord
says: "Those who believe in me, out of their belly shall flow streams of living water."
For the Word of God is present there, within us, and his work is to remove the earth
from the soul of each of us, to let the springs of water within gush free. This spring is
within you and does not come from outside, for "the kingdom of God is within you." Or
to give another analogy from Scripture, the woman who had lost her silver coin found it
not outside but inside her house. She lit her lamp, swept out the house, and there she
found the silver coin. For your part, if you light your "lamp," if you make use of the
illumination of the Holy Spirit, if "you see light in his light," then you too will find the
silver coin within you. For the image of our heavenly king is within us.
When God created human beings in the beginning, he made them "in his own image
and likeness." He does not imprint this image exteriorly on us, but within us. It could
not be seen in you as long as your house was dirty, full of junk and rubbish. But once
you let the Word of God clear the great pile of earth that is weighing down your soul,
then the image of the heavenly king will again shine out in you.
The maker of this image is the Son of God. And he is a craftsman of such surpassing
skill that though his image may indeed become obscured by our neglect, it can never be
destroyed by evil. The image of God always remains within you.

Catholic University of America Press, 1982) 68-69.

Videographers needed - all training provided
We are looking for one or two more volunteers to
assist with the video recording of the sermons
during Low Mass on Sundays. We’ll show you
exactly what to do. It is pretty straight forward.
The camera tripod needs to be set in place before
the sermon begins, and there are three ‘X’s’ on the
floor marking the spot to make it easy. After the
sermon the camera needs to be put away. It is a
one-person job, but we would like to train
several people to ensure that someone is always
available. Please contact Mother Jessica ASAP at
[email protected] for more information.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated
Reader A reading from the Second Book of Samuel.
When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she made lamentation for
him. When the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she
became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the
Lord, and the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were
two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many
flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had
bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat
of his meagre fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a
daughter to him. Now there came a traveller to the rich man, and he was loath to take
one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he
took the poor man's lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him." Then
David's anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, "As the Lord

CLINTON HALL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
In June the Parish Council recommended to the
Board of Trustees the concept of developing the
space occupied by the Parish (aka Clinton) Hall,
Bishops’ Room, flower room, vestry and offices into
a multi-level building to create revenue and to en-
hance the ministry of St. James'. At the July 24th meeting of the Board of
Trustees the following motion was passed:
"The Trustees establish a committee to be known as
the Predevelopment Committee to examine the
feasibility of redeveloping the space occupied by
Clinton Heritage Hall and report to the Trustees."
That Committee has been appointed, and at its first
meeting the group decided that Hugh McLean and
Pamela Jeacocke would act as co-chairs, Doug
Ibbott as process facilitator, and Betty Carlson as
communication liaison. The other appointees to the
PDC are: Kathy Walker, Brian Strehler, John Clark,
Leslie Arnovik, David Agler, and John Van Luven.
As well, the
committee will have representation at its meetings
from a member of the clergy and a warden, or
another member of the Board of Trustees.
Reports from the Committee will be regularly
communicated in the church bulletin and at
Parish Council meetings (the next one is on
October 20). Parishioners are encouraged to address
questions, suggestions and concerns using the
following:
• by email to [email protected]
• in writing to the office directed to the PDC
• representation (by request to the Parish
Council Chair) from any group, ministry or
mission objective leader
At this time donations are being sought to fund
the predevelopment expenses, estimated to be
$25,000 per year for a two year period.
Donations should be payable to the St. James'
Parish Foundation, marked Predevelopment Fund
(PDF). Official tax receipts will be issued for all
donations.
Please keep the members of the PDC in your
prayers, that they may have the wisdom,
dedication and focus to honour our Vision
Statement, “to discover the beauty of holiness in
our lives and neighbourhood.”

lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold,
because he did this thing, and because he had no pity." Nathan said to David, "You are
the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I
rescued you from the hand of Saul; I gave you your master's house, and your master's
wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had
been too little, I would have added as much more. Why have you despised the word of
the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the
sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of
the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you
have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. Thus says
the Lord: I will raise up trouble against you from within your own house; and I will take
your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbour, and he shall lie with your
wives in the sight of this very sun. For you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before
all Israel, and before the sun." David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord."

THE EPISTLE READING
Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians.
I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which
you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one
another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of
peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your
calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and
through all and in all. But each of us was given grace according to the measure of
Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a
captive; he gave gifts to his people." (When it says, "He ascended," what does it mean but
that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the
same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The
gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some
pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the
body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer
be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's
trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we
must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole
body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part
is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love. Ephesians 4:1-16
Sub-deacon The word of the Lord. lllAll Thanks be to God.
ALLELUIA A cantor begins the alleluia; all repeat it thereafter. Stand

THE HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got
into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When they found him on the
other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered
them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but
because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the
food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him
that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to
perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you
believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give
us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our
ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from
heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who
gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from
heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to
the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." Jesus said to them, "I am
the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in
me will never be thirsty." John 6:24-35

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty,
that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee:
O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God:
creator and preserver of all things.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord;
who on this first day of the week overcame death and the grave,
and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.
Therefore with Angels and Archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we laud and magnify thy glorious name;

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel
Celebrant All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy
tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to
suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect
sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to
continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming
again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks
to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which
is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new
covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins:
Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with
these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath
commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious
death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again
with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word
and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be
unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,
Lord our God.
Celebrant And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and
bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may
worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled
with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church
may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the
same Jesus Christ our Lord;
By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and
glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. lllAll Amen.
