Architects have always been asked to breathe new life into ancient ar-

chitectures inherited from the past or into historical – often monumen-

tal – artifacts that no longer respond to the customs and needs of the

contemporary society.

Nevertheless, the ancient architectures tell our story, therefore deserve

to be restored with interventions that bring along a hint of modernity

and show the trace of the design activity. The “Architecture for Heritage”

course has been created on these premises. Its aim is training designers

who will able to understand and enhance the memory of historical archi-

tectures and take inspiration from them to carry out new interventions

that both meet the new needs and are enriched by the link to the past.

In a close dialogue between the ancient and the modern, between exi-

sting architectures and new interventions, it is possible to comprehend

what has been and what is now, redesigning – through architecture – a

historical line bound to be continued by future generations.

The students will learn about the most advanced survey strategies and

redesign of historical architectures; therefore, they will be able to pro-

tect the ancient wonders without giving up on a contemporary appro-

ach to the project. They will acquire skills and experience in a field of

design that is always present and offers continuous and valuable job

opportunities.

The students will analyze the technical and compositional strategies to

adopt in contexts that host outstanding existing architectures through

the intervention on archaeological and industrial sites and focusing

mainly on the accommodation and cultural use of historical buildings.

The course will be made up of 108 hours of lessons, a 60-hour work-

shop and multiple lectures by well-renowned professional architects. At

the end of the lessons, the students will be granted an internship in one

of the following professional firms:

OMA - MCCULLOUGH MULVIN ARCHITECTS - AIRES MATEUS E ASSOCIADOS - CLAUDIO NARDI ARCHITECTS - NIETO SOBEJANO ARQUITECTOS - DUQUE MOTTA & AA - CARRILHO DA GRAÇA ARQUITECTOS - VINCENZO LATINA ARCHITETTI - MARKUS SCHERER - EDOARDO MILESI & ARCHOS - ALVISI KIRIMOTO + PARTNERS

The course will focus on how to integrate historical architectures with contemporary interventions, throu-gh a conscious and appropriate use of materials. The course will offer an aesthetical, technical and perfor-mative description of some materials and will focus on how to chose them according to performance, budget, specific architectural artifacts and designer’s sensitivi-ty. Therefore, the course will show different materials applications relevant to the intervention on historical architectures (i.e. Forte of Fortezza in Castel Tirolo). The course will also include the planning of the design texture to use for the workshop topic

He studies architecture at IUAV in Ve-nice where he graduates in 1990. He founds A5 Architects associate studio in 1992 which becomes “Markus Sche-rer Architekt” in 2001. During his care-er, he has gained several awards and recognitions: Hofstätter winery in Ter-meno won the “Costruire nelle alpi” Award; Kufstein fort won the Austrian Award for touristic buildings (2000); Tirolo Castle won the “Dedalo Minos-se Award” in Vicenza in 2008. Fortez-za fort won “Alto Adige Architectural Award” (2009) for its renovation. Nals Margreid winery represents another one of his remarkable projects.

The main challenge in architecture in the future will be realigning the mega-strategies of urban and infra-structural development with the need of preserving local cultures, the natural assets and history. This challenge is more and more technological and is con-nected to the conscious use of design solutions and construction details that may virtuously respond to the recent needs of a “conscious” and “sustainable” way of living. Through the analysis of a series of case studies regarding interventions on existing architectures, the students will learn more about the main techniques to face this scenario through specific technological and project choices. The course will also focus on the work-shop topic for each student, in order to set high-quality possible technical choices.

After collaborating for more than 10 years with international architects with the likes of Renzo Piano, Massimo Alvisi e Junko Kirimoto found AlvisiKi-rimoto + Partners s.r.l in 2002. Among their projects: the interiors of the new Saint Petersburg Alexandrinskij Thea-tre; Bulgari Winery in San Casciano dei Bagni; the Theatre for the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Naples; the tempo-rary pavilions of the Cinema Festival in Rome; Davide Cenci Store in Milan and Rome; Medlac pharmaceutical factory in Hanoi. Over the last few ye-ars, Alvisi has collaborated with Renzo Piano on the G124 program aimed at enhancing the italian cities outskirts. Moreover, he is on the advisory board of team “CasaItalia” led by professor Giovanni Azzone.

The course will focus on different strategies for sustai-nability - both passive and active - to carry out in the specific cases of intervention on existing meaningful historical architectures. The challenge of the optimiza-tion, both performative and energetic, becomes very complex when applied to historical architectures which require particular precaution and specific technologies that allow to reach high standards of performance whilst preserving the integrity and morphological fea-tures of the artifacts. Therefore, not only will the cour-se analyse the most appropriate technological solu-tions present on the market, but will also focus on how to enhance the features inherent to the architectural heritage in order to respond naturally to the modern requests of environmental sustainability.

He studies at IUAV and graduates at Polytechnic of Milan with Franca Helg in 1979. He is an expert in environ-mental-landscape protection and has obtained numerous specializations, among which Religious Architectu-re and Art of Gardens. In 1989, he founds Archos studio which works in different scales and settings, but is characterized by a coherent method and by a continuous research on environmental, social and building elements of Architecture. Besides his work activity, he participates actively in the cultural debate on contempo-rary architecture and is interested in the dissemination of knowledge. In 2008, he founds and starts directing the magazine “ARTAPP”. In 2012, he founds the Cultural Association Scuo-la Permanente dell’Abitare.

The aim of this course is strenghtening and structu-ring the compositional methodology of each student. Thanks to this course, the students will learn more about their own ability to structure the different requi-rements for a project, in order to create an architectu-ral proposal that is original and respondent to the set program. Only a proposal that keeps into account the enhancement of history, the budget, the functions, the compliance with rules, the technical and performative needs, the definition of the users’ experience and pre-diction of their perception will create meaningful and complex architectures that go beyond the mere arbi-trary and general expression of the architect’s taste.

Mauro Frate graduated with top mar-ks in Architecture at IUAV in 1989, where he later taught and researched sustainable architectures and urban projects. He participated in numerous university research activities and his works have been presented in inter-national exhibitions like the Biennale of Venice. He has designed and reali-zed public, industrial and commercial buildings, public spaces, redesigned agricultural, industrial and historical areas. In 1996, he founded Studio Ar-chiter; in 2009, he founds MFa_Mauro Frate architetto. The renovation of architectural heritage not only has to do with preserving historical or protected artifacts, but is an opportunity to express the best contempo-rary architecture and carry out the renovation of whole parts of a city. The greatest masters of all times have faced this amazing challenge: - the analysis of their action will teach the students how to excellently make the best use of their design ability. Therefore, the cour-se will give the students a series of cultural references that may help them develop their creativity. Through the analysis of some realized architectures (carried out thanks to the concerning designers), the students will be given an overview on the main and most famous ar-chitectures which sprung from a refined dialogue with history.

He studies Architecture at the Aca-demy of Mendrisio and at the Uni-versity of Ferrara, where he gradua-tes with a thesis with Peter Zumthor and Vittorio Savi. He is a lecturer in Architectural Design at the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna. The workshop will offer the students the oppor-tunity to bring together all the theoretical notions learnt during the course, in order to offer strategic solutions concerning a real design case. The course will be carried out in collaboration with Unipol and Agenzia del Demanio. The students will be given the opportunity to work on two different properties. On one side, the Fortilizio dei Mulini, a fairy-tale com-plex that, with its bridge and tower, represents one of the most fascinating and picturesque architectu-res in Italy (in which Christo has been exhibiting sin-ce 1968). On the other side, the hotel-complex of San Pancrazio Parmense: an incomplete mastodon that represent a fascinating and current challenge in the renovation of contemporary architectural he-ritage.

Chairman of the Department of En-vironment and Sustainability at the National Council of Architects, he was selected for the International Labora-tory of Architecture and Urban Desi-gn, directed by Giancarlo De Carlo. He is currently doing research at the Fa-culty of Architecture of Cesena, dea-ling with techniques and languages of representation and visual perception, and with innovative technologies and bioclimatic design. He is the founder of studio Arkit and practices in the field of new construction, renova-tion, interior design and exhibitions. He has received several prizes and awards in national and international competitions and has participated in the Triennale of Milan exhibition “Ita-lian Architects under 50”.
