Nathan Marting, Superintendent Each year as we start off the school year and hold our district welcome back for all faculty and staff, we like to share a theme to get us started. Last year, the theme was “Telling Our Story”, which focused on positive communications in the community, publicizing the great work that our students do, and marketing our school as a whole. This year selecting that theme did not hit me until a week before we welcomed everyone back. I was sitting in a conference in Des Moines for school administrators and I was waiting for our Governor to address the crowd. Like many in the education field, I was still fuming over the recent veto on educational funding in the state and other recent legislative actions that have seemed to work against school districts. As I was sitting there stewing in my own self pity, a speaker was addressing the crowd. In my cynical moment I began to dismiss the speaker as just another “expert” spouting this “new way of think- ing” or the next best initiative. As I listened to Simon Sinek address the crowd, he was speaking about what motivates us as human beings. While taking notes, I started reflecting on what moti- vates me to do what I do. I began thinking about my negative feelings on recent legislative ac- tions impacting schools and about how that was affecting my thinking and actions. I considered the impact that negativity can have in allowing us to lose our focus on why we do what we do. As this moment of clarity revealed itself, I thought about how negativity affects all of us. How sometimes we need to just take a moment and reflect back on the “why” do we choose to do the things we do. What is our passion and how is that reflected in our daily work? What causes us to dedicate ourselves to the work that we do? Ultimately, what is our “Why”? These questions transcend all parts of our life, professionally and personally. In a school setting, this should be asked of all of us continuously. No matter if we are a teacher, an administrator, a custodian, a para-educator, a cook, a bus driver, or a student. The question is not why do I have this job or why am I a student, but rather why do I conduct myself the way that I do? What drives me to do my work the way that I do? What causes me to give that little bit of extra in what I do? What inspires me to not just “punch in and punch out”, but dedicate myself to doing my best? When we lose focus on our why, we begin to lose our passion for what we do. We begin to give a little less effort in our work. We begin to do what we do for the wrong reasons. We become less ful- filled in our daily life. There is not a magic answer to the question of “What is Your Why?”, but rather it is more about taking that moment to reflect and refocus. To think back to what motivates, inspires, and drives you as a human being. As a Jesup staff of over 150, we collectively took a moment to answer this question as to “Why do we serve our Jesup students?” Each of us wrote down our “Why” on a notecard. I asked everyone to keep this notecard with them, and when we start to lose our fo- cus or become consumed with negative thinking or actions, to take a moment to pull out that notecard and remind ourselves of the “Why” in what we do. I encourage all of us to ask our- selves this same question and if it helps, write it down and keep it in a safe place. Then periodi- cally check back in on this when you face moments that cause you to lose your focus. We all need to take this brief moment to remind ourselves of the “Why”. “I realized my passion was not in the WHAT I was doing...it was in the WHY.” -Clara Hodgson

“High Expectations, High Achievement”

What is Your WHY? Nathan Marting, Superintendent

Each year as we start off the school year and hold our district welcome back for all faculty and staff, we like to share a theme to get us started. Track Usage With school back in session here are some “do’s and don’ts” when using the track:

The track is for running/walking only. No bikes, rollerblades, roller skates, skateboards, strollers, or any type of wheeled device or equipment. Wheelchair accessibility for track use is allowed and is accessible during the normal school day through the southeast ramp entrance.

The football field is to be used for competitions only. Once the surrounding grass areas inside the complex are estab-lished, this would be a place where public use of grass areas is acceptable, but please stay off of the playing surface.

Please no pets on the track or on any school property in general.

Please refrain from public use of lanes one and two as these see greater wear and tear through competition and ath-letic practice. For the convenience of all users, we ask that running takes place in lanes three through five and walk-ing take place in lanes six through eight.

No climbing on or over fences. There is a public entrance on the northeast corner of the track that will be open 24/7. This entrance is designed to only allow pedestrian traffic through and is set up in a manner to keep bicycles or other equipment/vehicles out.

When Jesup athletic practices are in session on the track, we ask that the public refrain from using the track surface. During these times, we would encourage the public to stay on the concrete sidewalk that completely surrounds the track.

To Parents/Guardians: Reflections Portraits will be taking school pictures again this year. It is very important that your child(ren) have a picture envelope with them on the day their picture will be taken, whether they order a package or not. Envelopes will be passed out at school the day before picture day. Picture day for PK through Grade 2 is Tuesday, September 22, Preschool and Grades 3rd-5th will be Wednes-day, September 23, and Grades 6th-11th is Thursday, September 24 In order to receive the pictures back promptly, we send the order to the lab the same day as pictures are taken. If the envelope is not marked with what package you’d like to order or if the child doesn’t have an envelope, we still take their photograph but do not order a package. If we find out the day after picture day that you wanted a package, we won’t be able to reorder your package until after the entire school’s initial order is back in about 3 weeks. This delays your pictures for many weeks. Absentee picture day will be Wednesday, October 21. If you know of any family member who might want to order a package, please contact us, and we will mail them an order envelope in advance. If you have any questions or need special assistance, don’t hesitate to call Reflections Portraits at 319-827-1128.

BackPack Program 2015-2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, Jesup Community School is partnering with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to provide the BackPack Program to students during the 2015-2016 school year. The program begins in September and will continue throughout the school year. The BackPack Program is a free program that provides kid-friendly, non-perishable food for students most in-need, to eat over weekends and breaks when school meals are not available and there may be little or no food to eat. Please carefully consider your family’s economic status and determine if this program is something needed by your child(ren). If the BackPack Program is something your family depends upon, please complete the attached registration form. If you are able to make do without this assistance, please allow this program to be used by others. Items distributed in the BackPacks include cereal, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk, juice, fruit cups, pop-top meals, soup, vegetables, and granola bars. The food will be distributed to your child at the end of the school day on Fridays. Please explain to your child that the food must not be eaten or opened until they are home. If this happens, your child may lose the privilege of participating in the program. Parents and guardians concerned with food allergies need to be aware that BackPack Program items may include ingredients such as nuts, soy, wheat, eggs and milk. The Northeast Iowa Food Bank and Jesup Community School will not assume any liability for adverse reactions to food consumed. The Northeast Iowa Food Bank strives to include healthy and safe food. All food is labeled and sealed by the manufacturer. While some products might be past the marked best-by date, we have worked with the manufacturer to ensure they are still safe to consume. If you open an item and notice a problem, please contact the Northeast Iowa Food Bank immediately.
