IP Basics

Key information

Differences between Analog and IP

Analog• Cables are home run to head

end (Coax has max of 1000’)• Resolution limitation of VGA

(720x480)• Resolution and frame rate

determined thru recorder• No bandwidth limitations• Motion and analytics are

performed at the recorder• Compression is achieved thru

recorder• Video standards

IP• Cables are run to closest IT

closet (Cat5e has max run of 300’)

• Virtually no resolution limitation• Resolution and frame rate are

determined at the edge (camera)

• Bandwidth limitations determined by desired camera output and cable

• Motion and analytics are performed at the edge(camera)

• Compression is accomplished thru camera

• No standards yet! Not all cameras are compatible with recorders. PSIA and ONVIF are two standards that are being adopted.

Fundamentals

• Resolution• Compression• Frame Rate• Bandwidth• Standards

Visual Resolution

720 x 480 – NTSC/VGA 4 CIF

1920 x 1080P - HDTV

1280 x 720P HDTV

Resolution

• 1 CIF = 320 x 240 = 76,800 pixels

• 2 CIF = 720 x 240 = 172,800 pixels

• 4 CIF = 720 x 480 = 345,600 pixels

• 720p = 1280 x 720 = 921,600 pixels

• 1.3 MP = 1280 x 1024 = 1,310,720 pixels

• 3 MP = 2048 x 1536 = 3,145,728 pixels

• 5 MP = 2560 x 1920 = 4,915,200

Compression

• Refers to reducing the quantity of data used to represent digital video images, and is a combination of spatial image compression and temporal motion compensation.

• Tradeoff between disk space, video quality and the cost of hardware required to decompress the video in a reasonable time.

MPEG4 H.264

Bandwidth

Bandwidth• Is the primary measure of

computer network speed• Amount of data that

passes through a network connection over time as measured in bps

• The greater the capacity, the more likely that better performance will result

Latency• Is another element that

contributes to network speed

• Refers to any of several kinds of delays typically incurred in processing of network data

Standards

• PSIA • ONVIF

• Other methods for integration:- Native integration- RTSP (Real time streaming protocol)

DVR vs. NVR

• DVR-Records analog cameras-Cameras are connected via coax BNC inputs

• Hybrid DVR-Records analog and/or IP cameras-Analog cameras are connected via coax BNC inputs- IP cameras sit on the network – no IP camera cables are connected to the DVR

• NVR -Records all IP (VGA, HD & MP) cameras-NVR and IP are connected to the network-No add’l camera cables are connected to the NVR
