We appreciate our families, community and sponsors.
The Hickman Mills Educational Foundation is a vital conduit in providing financial support to student pro-grams and classroom enhancements. Our mission is to ensure quality education by enlisting businesses and the public to help provide educational opportunities for students and staff.
The Foundation distributes approximately $40,000 annually in grants for teachers and staff of the Hickman Mills C-1 School District and scholarships for seniors from Ruskin High School (approximately $20,000 each is awarded to each group). The grants and scholarships have the possibilities of benefitting almost all students and well over 200 teachers and staff of the district.
The donations from business and individuals to the foundation provide our children the support needed in the educational process. Thanks to each and all of you for providing funding to the foundation.
For your convenience, you can now go to our website http://www.hickmanmills.org and link to the Hickman Mills Educational Foundation page to make your donation online. Please do so.
The Hickman Mills Educational Foundation is gearing up for one of our favorite time’s of the year, taking applications for Scholarships and Grants.
This is what we work hard all year raising money for so we can reward our Educators and Students. Once Students and Teachers have applied the Foundation Board has special committee’s that review and score each application to determine who will be awarded funds. We have recently heard from two of our Scholar-ship recipients Jonathan and Donathan Morgan who are attending Iowa State. They are doing very well and are grateful for the scholarships they received from The Hickman Mills Educational Foundation. We encourage Graduating Senior and Teachers to apply, deadline is March 2nd.

HMEF Hosts Silent Auction Trivia, Gala & Dance Dr. Marjorie Williams Delivers Last “State of the District” Address
By Emmerson Brown, HMEF
On Sunday evening (November 13), about 90 guests participated in a fun-filled fundraiser at the Holiday Inn Kansas City Ballroom of CoCo Key Water Resort (across from the Truman Sports Com-plex).
The event’s emcee was C-1 Public Information Coordinator John Baccala and the guest emcee was HMHS Graduate & KMBC-TV 9 Reporter Justin Robinson. Some of the elected officials in attendance were KC City Council-man John Sharp, C-1 School Board President Bonnaye Mims & School Board Directors Darrell Curls, Breman Anderson, Dan Os-man and J.T. Brown.
Hosted by the not-for-profit (501c3) Hickman Mills Educational Foundation (HMEF) in partnership with the C-1 School District, this annual fundraising event also featured a “State of the District” ad-dress by retiring C-1 Superintendent Dr. Marjorie (Marge) Williams. During a nine-minute speech, Dr. Williams enumerated numerous successes for 2011 including, but not limited to, Back-to-School Rally & Parade with State Representative Kiki Curls, Opening Day with motivational speaker Wes Moore, Project Shine school make-overs, Parent Engagement projects, Academy of Engineering and Walk To School Day. Guests were also reminded that the C-1 school district had im-proved its progress in meeting the 14 standards on the state’s an-nual report card known as the Annual Performance Report (APR) from seven in 2010 to nine in 2011.
Dr. Williams concluded her address by announcing an APR goal for the current school year of “12 in 2012”. While acknowledging that “reshaping (infrastructures) was successful”, the district must re-main strong in the face of economically driven changes and refocus on getting the best outcome in student achievement. The C-1 school district theme this year of “Excite, Engage, Em-power & Excel” promotes the district’s commitment. After a brief intermission, the evening’s focus returned to the fund-raising effort with active bidding on the many donated Silent Auc-tion items including flat screen TVs, gift packages, jewelry, sports memorabilia and a last “Dance with Doc”. Dr. Williams help put the “fun” back into fundraising and raised additional money by line-dancing with guests.
Two days after the event, HMEF Executive Director Regina Hill Taylor expressed her thanks to participants and contributors by messaging “Thank you so much for attending and making this event a wonderful fundraiser. Your participation was appreciated and so were your ‘Dancing with Doc’ dollars. To date, we have raised $5000 with more money still coming in.” All Silent Auction Trivia, Gala and Dance proceeds will benefit the Hickman Mills Educational Foundation (HMEF) with its mission to raise, manage and distribute funds for educational programs that benefit students and staff of the Hickman Mills C-1 School District. Since its inception during the 2000-2001 school year, the HMEF has awarded over one-half million dollars ($562,500) in student scholarships and classroom grants.

Lisa Montgomery (Doston) may be new to the Educational Foundation but she is not new to community outreach & ser-vice. Employed by C-1 as the Assistant to the Superinten-dent/Board Secretary, she also has her own cancer-related foundation to assist cancer patients. The foundation’s motto is “We Survived. So Can You.” Last year, her foundation incorporated scholarships and fi-nancial assistance for families-in-need. Chosen as the first recipient for 2012, Lisa Montgomery (Doston) was recently recognized with the Community Changer Award. This award from The U Church is given to outstanding Com-munity Changers in the Kansas City area who have made a positive difference in the city. Congrats to Lisa Montgomery (Doston).
