I would like to extend a special Dun Laoghaire welcome to all our visiting players, coaches and supporters to the 9th Hibernia Trophy 2012. Over the years the tournament has grown in stature and is now regarded as the top under age international competition in Ireland. Defending champions Liverpool F.C. will face a stern test from the Scottish pair of Celtic F.C. and Hibernian while the English challenge will come from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City. Once again we are delighted to have our friends from Linfield F.C. flying the flag for Northern Ireland while the FAI Development Squad and St. Joseph’s Boys spearhead the home challenge.

These events do not just happen and months of planning and preparation have gone into every aspect of the tournament. I wish to thank the ground staff, facility staff, organising committee and the hundreds of volunteers whose hard work make this tournament so enjoyable for all.

I would like to thank all our sponsors for their continued generous support in these testing times.

A special thanks to the residents of Sallynoggin for their cooperation and patience during the tournament. I would to ask everyone to respect their privacy and property over the weekend.

I would also like to thank Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for theircontinued support before, during and after the tournament.

On behalf of St. Josephs Boys AFC, I would like to welcome everyone to Pearse Park, Sallynoggin this weekend for the 9th annual Hibernia Trophy particularly the players & coaches from the eight participating clubs. The Hibernia Trophy has developed over the past 9 years into Ireland’s leading under 15 youth football tournament and for our club to attract the calibre of clubs involved in the Hibernia Trophy this weekend is a credit to the organising committee and the many volunteers who run the tournament on an annual basis.

Last year’s tournament was extremely successful and we hope to emulate that again. To have Liverpool and Celtic back again is fantastic for the tournament and to have those two clubs compete in the Hibernia Trophy �nal last year in front of a huge crowd in Sallynoggin was a proud day in the history of Joe’s. It’s also great to welcome back our great friends from Belfast, Wolverhampton, Leicester and of course the FAI.

This year we are particularly delighted to welcome Hibernian FC to Joe’s for their �rst visit to the Hibernia Trophy. Hibernian are a huge club and we wish fellow Dubliner Pat Fenlon all the very best in his new job as �rst team manager at Easter Road. One of the most successful aspects of the Hibernia Trophy in recent years has been the number of scouts who have attended from UK Clubs and we are delighted to welcome them back in big numbers again this weekend.

We are also delighted to welcome back the o�cials from the FAI Referees “School of Excel-lence” and I’d like to thank Ian Stokes for his help in arranging the referees for the tourna-ment. I’d also like to thank the residents of Sallynoggin who put up with so much disruption throughout the year and most importantly all of volunteers who make the Hibernia Trophy what it is.

Finally I’d like to wish Jay and the Team all the very best this weekend.

The Celtic Football Club

Celtic return to the Hibernia Trophy this weekend looking to go one better than last season when they were beaten in a penalty shoot out in the final after in a very tight game with Liverpool.

Academy Director Chris McCart explained, “the Hibernia Trophy last season proved an invaluable experience for our players in what turned out to be an extremely successful season, not only did the team do well on the domestic front but we provided the international squad with 12 players whilst we also won the British leg of the Nike Cup against all of the top Premiership clubs in Warick University last Easter before heading to Shangai for the Nike Cup World Finals”.

“We receive numerous invitations to attend tournaments throughout the world and we are delighted to be heading to Dublin for the Hibernia Trophy, the hospitality & support we receive from Will Clarke and his team at Joes is second to none and these are key factors in selecting which tournaments we attend. We are looking forward to playing against such top class opposition so early in the season and we look forward to continuing our great working relationship with St Josephs Boys going forward”.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC returns to the Hibernia Trophy for the third time this weekend having competed last season and also in 2007. Wolves are always very welcome guests to Joes and this year we are delighted to welcome Kevin, Gareth, Alan & of course our very own Willie Byrne back to Pearse Park.

The fact that Wolves recently were awarded Category 1 status - the highest rating possible - as part of the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan shows that the fantastic work undertaken by Kevin & his team of staff at Compton is beginning to bear fruit for the club.

Wolves have been drawn against Celtic, the FAI Development Squad & Linfield this weekend and they will be hoping to improve on last season’s performance.

Academy Director, Kevin Thelwell recently spoke of Wolves involvement in the Hibernia Trophy, “It’s great to be back in Joes this weekend for the Hibernia Trophy. We travel to tournaments throughout Europe each season and the Hibernia Trophy is up there with the best of them. It is a credit to St Josephs & the organising committee that a tournament of this calibre is run so professionally by volunteers. It really is unique in that sense”.

Linfield FC, Northern Ireland’s most successful club return to the Hibernia Trophy for the fourth time this weekend having first participated in 2009. Their first visit to Joe’s was their most successful to date when they were beaten in the final against a very strong Huddersfield Town side.

Academy Director David Chisholm had this to say about their visit to Sallynoggin this weekend “this is the fourth season that we have been invited by Joe’s to participate in the Hibernia Trophy. The Hibernia has grown in stature over the past few years and we are always delighted to be invited. The quality of opposition is always first class and we face a difficult challenge this weekend having been drawn against the FAI Development Squad, Celtic & Wolves but it’s a challenge we are looking forward to”.

Linfield & Joes have developed a great working relationship and a friendship that will no doubt last for many years to come. Joe’s u11, u12 & u13’s travelled to Belfast in January to play some games and last weekend we welcomed Linfield’s u17’s to Sallynoggin for a training camp whilst this weekend we welcome both the u14 & the U15 teams to Sallynoggin.

Fai Development Squad

Once again it is an honour and a privilege to welcome the players and staff from our National Association to Joe’s for the weekend. The FAI Development Squad has been involved in the Hibernia Trophy since its inception in 2004 and has won the tournament on three different occasions.

From the FAI’s perspective, it is the first opportunity to bring together many of the rising stars that shone at the Kennedy Cup in Limerick last June and marks the beginning of the process that will hopefully lead to some of the players on show this weekend taking the first step on the international ladder.

“The Hibernia Trophy is an important date in the Emerging Talent Programme’s calendar. It provides us with an opportunity to further assess some of the players that did well in the Kennedy Cup last June and it provides the players in the squad the opportunity to pit their wits against some top class opposition. It is hoped that some of the players that are involved this weekend will play in the U15 international team later on in the season”, said U15 International Head Coach Niall Harrison.

It is with great pleasure that St Josephs Boys AFC is hosting our 9th annual Hibernia Trophy at our home ground here in Pearse Park, Sallynoggin. The Hibernia Trophy has become a showcase event for the club and it offers an opportunity for our u15 Premier team to showcase their talents on such a magnificent stage.

Director of Football Performance Will Clarke said “hosting the Hibernia Trophy and wel-coming the various clubs to the Noggin for the weekend is always one of the highlights of the season. A lot of people put in a lot of work to make this tournament happen and none more so than the management team of Jay Mullaly, Stephen Moore, Nicky Cosgrave & Eamon Doyle who have been busy throughout the summer strengthening the team. They have added no fewer than 12 new bodies to the squad as they prepare for the forthcoming season”.

“Playing in the Hibernia Trophy is an extremely important development tool for our players as it allows them to see up close the level of performance required if they are to make the step up to playing football in the UK. Our players need to realise they are not competing exclusively with the best players in Dublin for these opportunities. Nowadays they are not only competing with the best players in Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow or London for the opportunity of a contract at a club, they are competing with the best that Europe and sometimes beyond have to offer. It is however important for our players to remember that the opportunities still exist if players are willing to make the necessary sacri-fices to be dedicated and committed to constantly improving every aspect of their game”.

We are delighted to welcome our club partners Liverpool FC back to Sallynoggin for the third time this weekend. Liverpool return as reigning Hibernia Trophy champions having beaten Celtic in a penalty shoot out in last year’s final.

To be able to welcome the most successful British club of all time to Sallynoggin for the Hibernia Trophy is fantastic and without doubt Liverpool’s presence at the Hibernia has elevated the tournament to another level.

The academy is thriving at the moment under the guidance of Frank McParland and his staff and it is hoped that within the current crop of players at Kirkby will be one or two more Steven Gerrard’s or Jamie Carragher’s.

Speaking about Liverpool’s participation in the Hibernia Trophy this weekend Frank commented “we are delighted to be returning to St Joseph’s as Hibernia Trophy champions, the tournament provides an excellent opportunity for our players to prepare for the upcoming season with some testing games. We have a very close working relationship with Will Clarke and his team at Joe’s and we always look forward to our visit to Dublin”.

We are delighted to welcome the players and staff from Leicester City FC to Sallynoggin this weekend. Leicester City returns to Joes this weekend for the third time this weekend having competed in 2010 & 2011.

Joes & Leicester City have developed a fantastic working relationship over the past few years culminating in Sean Burke from last seasons U16’s signing a professional contract with the East Midlands club in July.

The academy has made great strides in recent years under the stewardship of Jon Rudkin and his team of staff at the very impressive training facilities at Belvoir Drive.

“We are very much looking forward to our visit to St Josephs this weekend for the Hibernia Trophy” commented Jon Rudkin recently. “We have been drawn in a diffi-cult group with Liverpool, Hibernian & St Josephs but it will be a good test for our young players. The tournament has grown in reputation of the past few years and we are always delighted to travel to Dublin. Tournament football is an important part of a young players development and the Hibernia Trophy affords our players the opportunity to test themselves in a very competitive, well run tournament.

It gives us great pleasure to welcome Hibernian FC to Dublin for their first ever visit to the aptly named Hibernia Trophy. Both Hibernian FC and the Hibernia Trophy take their name from the historical Latin name for the island of Ireland.

Hibernian FC is a massive club and it is with particular interest that people in Ireland will be watching their progress with new manager Pat Fenlon at the helm.

Hibernian first game is a difficult game against reigning champions Liverpool but it is a challenge that Bill Hendry (Head of Youth) and his players are looking forward to, “our players are looking forward to competing against other top clubs but just as importantly it offers them the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy the warmth of hospitality that Ireland is so well renowned for.

”No matter what success we achieve on the pitch over the weekend of tournament football, I would hope that our hosts and fellow competitors will see that our players and staff conduct themselves in a manner which is not only a credit to the standards set in the Hibernian FC Academy, but is also indicative of the respect our players and staff have for the tournament, its organisers and fellow competitors”.

FAI “Referees School of Excellence”

We are delighted to welcome back the officials from the FAI Referee School of Excellence programme. The School of Excellence is a two year programme run by the FAI under the guidance of Ian Stokes with the aim of providing specialist education, training and development to identified match officials who have the potential to officiate at the highest levels of the game.

The success of the Referee School of Excellence can be gauged by the fact that 96% of the current Airtricty League Panel are former students of this programme including the all of the FAI’s current FIFA Panel members.

Ian Stokes from the School of Excellence explained the benefits for the referees officiating at the Hibernia Trophy, “The Hibernia Trophy offers a great platform for some of our most promising students to officiate at a high level before graduating to the Airtricity League panel and also the hospitality afforded to us last year bySt Josephs made for a most enjoyable experience for the officials involved”.
