HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS
www.smithsdetection.com
Hold baggage screening has historically represented a major challenge to the aviation industry. The evolution of this requirement to include 100% inspection of checked baggage has now become a critical element in regaining traveler confidence and assuring the future success of the aviation industry. After four years of research and development, Smiths Heimann is proud to introduce the next generation of automatic hold baggage screening technology, the HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS "Explosive Detection tomography System". We strongly feel the combination of detection, throughput, reliability and overall quality will be the first technology to fully satisfy the critical requirement of 100% hold baggage screening.
The difference between successful and unsuccessful X-ray technology is not just night and day, it can be life or death. Introducing the second generation of Automatic Explosive Detection by Smiths Heimann.
HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS
On the highest levelThe automatic explosive detection
system HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS
represents the second generation
of the proven Smiths Heimann
EDS technology. The abilities
of the EDtS to meet all of the
requirements existing within a
100% screening environment will
support our position of offering
the most sophisticated and
comprehensive solution to-date.
ExperienceSmiths Heimann is the most experienced X-ray security manufacturer in the
world. With more than 50 years in the industry and more than 40,000 X-ray
units installed worldwide, Smiths Heimann has established a most effective
manufacturing and support infrastructure.
ReliabilitySmiths Heimann, as an ISO 9001 certified company, offers the most reliable
security screening solution in the world. In an effort to support this position,
Smiths Heimann captures all service history data to be used for both quality
control and reliability analysis.
The results of these calculations for the EDS, the predecessor of the EDtS,
is a Mean-Time-Between-Failure of 1.4 years. We are confident that these
reliability achievements will represent a minimum standard to the new
generation EDtS.
DetectionThe EDtS offers the revolutionary approach of combining both physical
signatures "Zeffective" (atomic number) and density. The analysis of both
these critical elements will allow the EDtS to offer the highest detection
rate in its class.
ApertureWith a tunnel opening of 100 cm (39.37") wide and 80 cm (31.49") high, the EDtS
will allow for the screening of even oversized baggage, avoiding the need to
divert to an alternate screening technology.
ThroughputThe EDtS in combination with its detection capability, is able to screen up
to 1,800 bags per hour – setting a new standard for automated screening
technology.
IntegrationThe EDtS, operating at 0.5 m/sec (ninety feet per minute), has been specifically
designed to meet the challenges of integration. The EDtS offers the ability to be
integrated into existing or newly designed conveyor systems.
Within the proven multi-level method of checked baggage screening, all
baggage is screened automatically for explosives by a high speed Level 1
system, the EDtS. Bags cleared by EDtS continue to their determined
destination while rejected bags are automatically diverted to a second security
level for further inspection. A common configuration of the multi-level
approach would be to have an image of rejected bags automatically transferred
to an operator workstation for visual inspection (Level 2). Should further
scrutiny be necessary, the image and bag are sent to Level 3. With the decrease
in throughput requirements for Level 3 screeners, multiple technologies exist
for this application and implementation will be dependent on the security
philosophy of the airport.
Automation of the primary inspection process offers the added benefits of
reducing staff requirements and recurring costs.
The features of this Smiths Heimann solution include:
Project ManagementIn support of our solution for
100% inspection of hold baggage,
Smiths Heimann has created
the most sophisticated and
experienced project management
team in the industry. This team
offers multiple levels of expertise
within the design, integration and
commissioning of customized
solutions. Our goal in acquiring this
expertise was to offer our clients
the ability to manage the entire
project from design to operation.
Multi-level screening concept
Level 2X-ray images of bags which were automatically determined to be suspicious
at Level 1 are subsequently evaluated at a second level. The security
screener interprets the images at a workstation. To support accurate image
interpretation, the suspicious items in question are highlighted within a red
frame. The brilliant image resolution of the HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS gives the
screener the tools necessary to interpret the image expeditiously. If the
screener is unable to clear the bag, a Level 3 inspection will be necessary.
Level 1Within the multi-level hold baggage screening method, all baggage is
screened automatically for explosives by means of the HI-SCAN 10080 EDtS.
The majority of the bags are cleared at this level and directly transported to the
sorting system for transport to the aircraft. X-ray images of bags considered to
be suspicious are automatically forwarded to Level 2.
Level 3At Level 3, suspicious bags are analyzed in further detail. These bags are
checked by an inspection process defined individually by each airport.
For example, Level 3 may be accomplished by utilizing additional X-ray
procedures with HI-SCAN equipment, opening of the bag in the presence of
the passenger, etc. In support of multi-level solutions, EDtS at Level 1 can be
networked in such a way as to provide the image of the suspicious bag to the
screener at any level.

A total of five independent fan shaped X-ray beams scan every piece of
baggage. Three X-ray generators, configured in complementary positions,
produce X-ray beams from five different angles. These five angles assist in the
gathering of the significant information required to achieve the highest levels of
detection.
Historically, the realization of high levels of detection has forced a compromise
in the throughput levels of detection equipment. This phenomena is simply
based on the limits of laws of physics for the traditional X-ray systems. The
revolutionary EDtS ultimately solves this need for compromise.
The utilization of material classification by means of Zeffective and volume/
density algorithms results in, what we refer to, stationary computer
tomography. This technique allows for the highest level of detection combined
with high baggage throughput.
Data analysis, data storage, data transferInterconnection, operating an overall data network, combines all relevant
system components and allows even the most varying information to the right
place within the shortest time. Since when it comes to security a fast
reaction time is most essential.
