CHANGES IN SUMMER SESSION

Growth in summer classes is good for students:

• They have another opportunity to take classes for which capacity is limited during the academic year.

• They may be able to take classes that accelerate their progress toward a degree.

• The expectation is that the balance of classes taught by faculty, lecturers, and graduate students will be similar in summer to that during the academic year.

Growth in summer classes is good for academic units:

• With the new financial model for 2013, no HHS unit lost money on summer classes and most had a “profit.”

• The total amount distributed to all HHS units was nearly $300,000.

• These general funds can be used to strengthen units and to offset decreases in other funds.

REVIEW OF 2013 AND PLANS FOR 2014

CHANGES IN SUMMER SESSION

Summer session is still relatively small:

• In 2013, student credit hours for HHS summer classes totaled approximately 5,200, which is slightly more than 10% of that for a typical fall semester.

• Summer 2013 enrollment was much greater than in Summer 2012, but only for distance-education classes; on-campus enrollment actually decreased slightly.

The plan is to increase summer enrollment still more in 2014:

• The provost is guaranteeing, for the most popular courses and those most important for students’ progress toward the bachelor’s degree, to cover the cost of instructors’ salaries even if course enrollment is low.

• In return, units must guarantee to offer those courses in 2014, 2015, and 2016, so students can plan for future summers.

• These guarantees have already been extended for Summer 2014, but other summer classes can still be put on the 2014 schedule.
