Brief discussion on Pilgrim centersWiththeblessingsofAsmathAcharyanHHRangapriyaSwamigalandguidanceofDr.V.Sadagopanof

USA, I had authored two ebooks HanUmath PrabhAvam and Pancha BrundhAvanam of Poorva

Azagiasingars,All thesedays theywere in theformof ebooks. Then Lastweeka sudden thought

occurredthatwhynottakeprintoutofthebooksandpresenttoSwamiji,soItookalaserprintout

withthefrontpageincolourandhaditspiralbound.IwassupposedtomeetSwamijiforanarticleto

be published on web. As Swamiji was traveling inspite of his advanced age I could not get an

opportunitytomeethim.On20thmorningIcalledSriCVRamaswamyMamatofindoutwhenitwill

beconvenienttomeetSwAmiji,andhetoldhewill letmeknow. ItoldCVRmamathatsince Iwas

visitingnearbyarea,IwouldliketojustmeetSwAmijiandpresentthebooktohim.On20thEveningI

wenttoAshramtoPresenttheSwamijithehardcopyofmybook,heblessedandtoldhewillreadit.

ThenSwAmijiglancedthroughthebooksandinthebookHanUmathPrabhAvam,hesawthePicture

ofNamakalAnjeneyaSwami,NamagiriThayarandalsoNamakalNarasimhan.

Then Sri Ramaswamymama explained aboutNarasimhan atNamakal.He told the beauty of the

moorthyandspecialtyofthemoorthy.Thespecialtyhere isthat inrightpalmwecanstillseesome

bloodstainsasheissittingafterHiranyanSamharam,anditisoneofaveryfewtempleswhereyou

seeTriMoorthies.SrIVishnu,BrahmaandRudraareprayingtoourLordNaraKesari.ThenSwamiji

askeduswhetherwehaveseentheTempleatBelavadiwhichisveryneartoBelur,Halebeduandalso

Chikkamagalur. Fortunately I had seen the TempleatBelavadi, it is Thrikootachala Temple (Three

Cellar) and its Main deity is Veera Narayana, on his right side is Rukmini, Sathyabama Sametha

Venugopala,Gopikas,SanathKumaraRishis,Cowsandon leftSide isYogaNarasimha inaveryeye

templeandYogaNrusimha is in yogaposture

and is having Shankha and Chakra. He is in

Periya malai (Big Hill) along with Thayar

Amrithabalavalli. Swamihad had the darshan

Thenswamicontinued,andsomebodyaskedwhether theShankuChakra is inSwamiNarasimhars

hand,buthowcome itcame inthehandofHanuman.ForthatSwamitoldBhagavathAnugruhana

AvalambhisiDhridhaSankalpanidhaayethu.Hecontinued,AnjaneyaSwamiprayedtotheShankha

ChakradhariandThanmayathvaUntagiShankuChakraappearedinhishandalso.ThenSwamitold

Acharyan says "Thvan Chinthayan Thvanmayantham Prapannha Tvamuth grunan

Shabdameyandamna. ItmeansSathyaandSathyarthaalwaysgiveshappiness,There isnothing like

sathyaandthereisnothingmoreattractivethanSathya.SuchanattractiveplaceistheabodeofLord

NarasimhaofSholingurMalai.

A famous Acharya who hailed from Sholingur is

Dhoddacharya.Hewasagreatbhaktha. Sholingur

was previously known as Cholalingapuram

/Cholasimhapuram. The temple was already there

butthisgreatAcharyaDhoddacharyaimprovedthis

temple. Dhoddacharya was deeply attached to

KanchiVaradaalso.AtempleforVaradaistherein

Sholinguralso.Asweall know thatyearlyGaruda

Sevai for Kanchi Varada takes place in Vaikasi

Brahmostavam. Once Dhoddacharya of Sholingur

couldnotmakeittotheKanchipuramfestival,ashe

wasunwell.Heexpressedhis inability to the Lord,

while standing on the banks of the Brahma

Theertham(holywatersourceisknownasThakkan

Kulam). The Lord, in all His enchanting beauty,

sitting on Garuda (the mystical broad winged bird who flies the Lord) appeared before the

Dhoddacharya,andblessedhim.Thishappenedfew100yearsago, theKainkaryaParaswhowere

carrying the Kanchi Varadha in Garuda Vahana could not move a step further. At that time

Dhoddacharyasguruwasalsothere,andknewwhathadhappened,HetoldVardarajaperumalthat

Doddhanaku Darshanam Koduthathu Pothum, 1000s of other Bhakthas are waiting for your

Darshan.TocommemoratethiseventeventodayduringthethirddayoftheVaikasiBrahmostavam

atKanchipuramwhen LordVaradharaja is takenoutof the temple,mountedonGarudaVahanam

theystopthesancharam,assoonastheLordapproachesthemainentranceofthetower,theLord's

This isknownas"DhoddacharyaSwamiSevai''. HewassuchagreatAcharya thathedidnothave

Kalai bedam.He haswritten a BhashyaforVedantaDesikans "SathaDushini" known as ChandaMarutham .Hewas suchagreatYogiandMahaAcharya.ThenCVRmamarequestedSwamiji tonarrate the greatness of Dhoddacharya in reestablishing the glory to Govindarajan Moorthy in

Thiruchithrakootam(ModerndayChidambaram).

Swami started the narration again, Chidambaram is equally important to both Shaivas and

Vaishnavas. Chidambaram is famous for Nataraja temple. Swami told us that according to

SthaalapurnambothSriMahaVishnuandShivaexisted in that temple.There isPoorvakathaand

alsotheSthalaPuranatellthatoncetherewasadancecompetitionbetweenShivaandKaliAmman.

TheywantedtoknowwhoisshreshtainTandavaNrutya.Okcompetitionistherebutwhoisgoingto

betheUmpire/Judge?TheJudgeshouldbeimpartialandheshouldhavethecapacitytoJudgeandhe

shouldbemoreknowledgeable(Sarvagyan)person.ThentheyzeroedinonGovindarajan,whoisclose

toboth(Parvathi(Kali))istheSisterofMahaVishnuaccordingtothestory.ThenGovindarajantells

thatheiswillingtobethejudgeandhewillliedownandwatchthecompetition.ThenMahaVishnu

givesjudgmentthatbothareequal,butfinallyShivawoninUrdhvaTandava.Thenaccordingtothe

condition KaliAmman concedes defeat and moves to the Ellai (Border) of Chidambaram and she

dwellsthere(ItisknownasKaliAmmanKoil).SwamiaskedusnowwewillbethinkingwhyKalicould

notdo theUrdhvaTandava (UrdhvaTandavameans lifting the legupanddoTandava), reasoning

peoplegiveisShivaisMaleandKaliisladysoshedidnotlifttheleganddoUrdhvaTandava.Swami

toldthiswasnotthereason! It isnotmere liftingof leg,SwamiquotestheSloka"Urdhavarehtham

virupakshamVishvaroopayavaiNamaha"

ItisnotthatonlyShivacandotheUrdhvaTandavabyliftingthelegup,butevenKalicouldhavedone

theUrdhvaTandava,butnotbycompetingwithherhusband,butbycooperatingwithherHusband,

Wehavetoobservethisanditisveryimportantinlife.SwamiquotesthatChristianitytalksaboutthe

manwomanrelation (sthreepurushasambhanda),theysayGodcreatedAdamfromoutofhisown

ribs,asfarasEve isconcernedhecreatedheroutofAdamsbackboneribs. Hedidnotcreateher

directlyhencewomanisconsideredasinferiorinChristianity.ButinourDharmawegiveequalstatus

importantthanother?Swamithenaskedusthere isRightAuricle,RightVentricle,thenthereisLeft

Auricle and LeftVentricle in our own heart, now tellmewhich ismore important?We could not

answer,swamitoldbothareofvalueandimportant,nodifference.SonowcomingtoChidambaram

Competition,bothShivaandKalishouldnotcompetewitheachother,butmustbecomplementaryto

eachother.Thereshouldbenodifference/BhedaBhavabetweenSthreeandPurusha.ThenSwami

discussed again about the Chidambaram Competition and told Kali also could have done Urdhva

Tandavahadshebeencomplimentary,notcompetitive.SeeHeisPurushaParamaPurusha,andhad

shecooperatedthentheSloka"ShivaShakthiAikyaRupinyaiNamaha"wouldbemoreapt.InKollur

when theyworshipMookabika they say "ShivaShakthiAikyaRupinyaiNamaha",BothareBrahmi

Sthiti,bothareequalandsamelevel.AccordingtoMahaYogaShastrasourbodyisdividedintotwo

Kings, the rule of

Vijayanagara kings came,

Shiva/Vishnu Bhedas.

Desikas' period. This

Desikan adviced the Raja

to do the Prathistai of

Govindarajan Idol. It was

Govindaraja Vigraham.

Some say it is under deep sea, some say that with great difficulty they transported the same to

Govindarajapuram inKilla Tirupathi.We have toguessandwehave to seewhether it is logically

possible because where is Chidambaram and where is Thirupathi! Now let us come back to

Thiruchithrakootam.

PoodarikavalliThayar.PoorvaKathasaystheArchakarwhodidpujatoNatarajausedtodopujafor

Govindarajaalso.Therewasnodwesha(DislikebetweenShaivitesandVaishnavitesbut,somewhere

inthemiddletheShiva/VishnufightingstartedandthePoojatoGovindarajawasstopped,butdueto

Dhoddacharyas intervention and his skills in convincing others, theGovindraja Vigraham was re

consecratedandpujastarted.Nowonceagain ifyoustand inKamalaMantapamyouhavetheeka

kaladarshanofNatarajaandGovindaraja.ThereistheShilashasanaofalltheeventsincludingwhat

CholaRajadid.

ThenSwamitoldthatnextnearestKshetramisSriMushnam.ThenhetoldPresentSrimathAndavan

ofSrimathSrirangamAndavanAshram isthenativeofSriMushnam. InSriMushnamthetemple is

dedicated toSriVarahaMoorthy.Swami toldthatthere isaVarahamoorthy temple insideMysore

Palace. It isaSwethavarahaMoorthy.TheadiSthanamofSwethavaraha isSriMushnam,Buthe is

thereinMysore.SwamyaskeddoyouknowhowitcametoMysorefromSriMushnam.Thenhetold

thatitshouldhavebeenthePeriodofChikkaDevarayaWodeyarsomecourtierhadtoldthatallthe

DivyaKshetrasareinTamilNadu,isthereanyDivyaKshetrainKarnataka?ThenKingsentsomebody

innighttoSriMushnamandgotthestatueofAdiVarahatoMysoreanddidthePrathistai.Ifyousee

theSwethaVarahainMysoreyoucannothaveThiruvadiDarisanam,becausetheyhavebroughtthe

moorthyinahurryanddidthePrathistai.ButtheSwethaVarahaisabeautifulmoorthy.Sonowthe

MoorthyatSriMushnamisKrishnaVaraha,notSwethaVaraha.TheMoorthyatSriMushnamlooks

as ifhe isgoing toYuddha, It is

also a beautiful moorthy and in

Tamil Nadu almost all the

Moorthies are very beautiful to

look at. Swami told that

likes itandeats it. It isanutritiousfood.With thisKonaregedu the templeauthoritiespreparea

Bhakshanam.ItisasweetpreparationanditislikeLadoo.EveninMysoretheygiveMushtha.Ifyou

need this special PrasAda you have to tell before hand in Srimushnam. Swami then told that the

MuslimrulersdidnotlikeHindusmuch,butafewofthemhaddeepattachmenttoVarahaPerumal.

Youobservewhen theyhave toswearatsomebody theywillsay"SuvarkeBache.Even today the

MuslimsatSriMushnamprayandpaytheirrespecttoSriVarahaSwamy.Swamitoldwhoevergoesto

Chidambaram, they visit Sri Mushnam temple also. Swami also told whoever has some stomach

ailments they go to Sri Mushnam and partake the Mushtha and get cured, such is the Kshetra

Mahima.Thenswamiaskedmewhether IhavevisitedSriMushnamandChidambaram? Ireplied in

thenegative.ThenSwamitoldpleasevisitandcomeandhetoldtherePhotographyisnotallowed(He

knowsmypassionfortakingPhotosofPerumalandThayarofdifferentKshetramofKarnataka).
