What stands between people or propertyand any natural or man-made forcemust be secure, quick to respond andabove all, reliable. In 1991, HESCOBastion Ltd began production of theirConcertainer® unit, providing a uniqueway of positioning and containing largevolumes of earth, sand, gravel or rock, toform either temporary or long-termstructures.

During the past two decades, theConcertainer unit has been used forapplications as varied as military fieldfortifications and perimeter defenses, national security and infrastructureprotection, land reinforcement andarchitectural projects, emergency floodprotection and flood prevention.

Such is the versatility of the design, theconcept of the Concertainer system hasbeen applied to a number of differentproducts that provide solutions for bothtemporary and long-term structures inmany countries around the worldincluding the USA, the European Union,Turkey, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Iraq,Bosnia, Kosovo, Yemen, Jordan, and the UAE.

HESCO Bastion Ltd has become a key player in the field of asset protectionthroughout the world and a benchmarkfor reliability, exacting standards andexcellent customer support.

The HESCO Concertainer unit is a multi-cellular wall system manufacturedfrom welded Zinc-Aluminum coatedsteel wire mesh and joined with vertical, helical coil joints.

The Concertainer Mil® units are linedwith either beige or green coloredheavy-duty non-woven polypropylenegeotextile. Part-lined and unlined Milunits are available for use inarchitectural, landscaping and civilengineering projects.

The result of this unique combination ofcomponents is that the units fold flatwhen empty, so that several can becarried on a standard pallet or skid, making transportation and positioningefficient and rapid. As the Mil units arealready pre-assembled, once on site theycan be filled with locally availablematerials such as earth, sand, gravel orrock, with minimal manpower and usingstandard front-end loaders or similarequipment.

The standard Mil unit has recently beenfurther developed in direct response totwo increasingly important customerrequirements: environmentalresponsibility, and the increasing cost ofrecovery of material after the crisis orconflict.

Recoverable Mil units are deployed inexactly the same way as the previous Milproducts. Once the mission is over, efficient recovery for disposal can begin. The units can be recovered, flat-packedand transported for recycling ordisposal, providing substantial reductionin logistical and environmental impact.

Around the world, the unrivaled successof HESCO products in the combatenvironment has prompted their use for the protection of sensitive civilianinstallations that may be at risk fromhostile attack. Embassies, consulates, government buildings, and criticalinfrastructure facilities have all benefitedfrom utilizing the protectivecharacteristics of products from theHESCO portfolio.

HRSFThe HRSF™ (HESCO RedeployableSecurity Fence) is designed to provide arapidly deployed high-level securityfence for the protection of criticalinfrastructure. The fence utilizes thesame technology as Concertainer unitsand can be built on undulating or slopingground. The fence’s unique feature isthat it does not require a preparedsurface or excavation to place posts, butis anchored in place by ballast.Aesthetic covers can be supplied tocover the ballast. Integrated portals andturnstiles (for pedestrian access), arealso available for use with the fence.

Once the threat has receded the fencecan be simply dismantled, all materialsrecovered and then redeployed toanother site or flat-packed and placedinto storage awaiting future use.

HRSF has been tested against breachingattack by personnel and vehicle.

In trials, the HRSF successfully stopped a 7.5 tonne truck traveling at a speed of 30mph. As a result, the HRSF wasawarded a PAS 68 rating, making it idealfor use as a Hostile Vehicle Mitigation(HVM) barrier.

ConcertainerOften the threat posed by terroristweapons dictates that defenses mustconsist of a vehicle barrier and ballisticwall. For this type of requirement theConcertainer unit is the obvious choice.

To meet internationally recognizedperformance standards, barriers arerequired to be independently tested. These trials are conducted under strictconditions, during which HESCOproducts are subjected to direct vehicleimpact.

In the K-12 test a structure must stop atruck with a 15,000lb gross vehicularweight (gvw) traveling at a nominal50mph. HESCO Concertainer unitsstopped the truck in under a second. Infurther trials at the Texas TransportationInstitute, a larger barrier of Concertainerunits stopped a 65,000lb truck travelingat 50mph and within the originalfootprint of the wall , meeting the ASTMH50 standard.

BlastBlocBlastBloc® is another HESCO productawarded K12 certification. UnlikeConcertainer units, BlastBloc units usestrong polymer panels to contain theirfill material. The flexibility, re-usabilityand load bearing qualities of BlastBlocmakes it suitable for a range ofapplications where dust and dirt maycause problems, or where the ‘military’aesthetic of Concertainer units isundesirable.

Increased threats from internationalterrorism means that providing properprotection for sensitive assets andbuildings is a key element in being“ready, not afraid” - a philosophy thatlies at the heart of internationalcounterterrorism strategies.
