Looking Forward A brand new virtual tour of the forthcoming £34 million Hertswood world-class building is now
available on our Facebook page and website. Narrated by Lucie in Year 7, the video shows some of
the fantastic facilities available soon for our current students and incoming Year 7 in 2018-19.
Our community will be helping to design some of the internal spaces over the next few months
including the new library, restaurant, sports centre, theatre and activity studio, as well as all of the
subject areas. With students making excellent progress and receiving offers from the best
universities in the world, including Oxford and Cambridge, we look forward to a new building which reflects both
their efforts and the enduring dedication of their teachers.

Progress to date on the project has been very good, with demolition
now complete and around 95% of the materials being recycled.
For the foundations of the new building, 405 concrete piles have already been installed to
22 metres deep, with the 3 storey steel frame due to start installation next month.
In fact, 60% of the structural steel has already been manufactured and is currently
being painted, to be delivered in the next few weeks, slightly ahead of schedule.

Year 7 Girls Football Champions by Miss Tinsley (Head of Girls’ PE)
On Tuesday 6th February, sixteen girls from Year 7 formed two of the ten teams
entering the U12 District Football Tournament hosted at Hertswood.
After playing four group games each, both teams had won three and lost one,
leaving the A Team runners-up in their group and B Team winners of theirs. This
meant the teams had to face off against one-another in the semi finals!
After a well fought match, the A Team took the win and went on to play Dame
Alice Owen’s in the final. The girls worked extremely well as a team and with
goals from Kitty and Kathleen, they came out as 2-0 winners to earn themselves
District Champion medals! Well done to the girls from both teams, who all worked incredibly hard and performed amazingly.

Non Examination Assessments - Rule Changes for Year 11 and 13
The Joint Council for Qualifications, which oversees GCSEs and A levels, has changed the rules on non-examination assessments for GCSE and A level
students. In brief, this means students must be told of their marks for any NEA (coursework) before it is submitted to the exam board for moderation.
In order for teaching staff to have time to deal with any queries, the date for the submission of NEA has been brought forward to Friday 16th March.
Students must be told their teacher assessed marks on or before Friday 20th April. Students/parents then have a week to ask for a re-mark. This re-mark
will be carried out by a different teacher than the one who originally marked the work.
Students need to be aware that the result of this re-mark could be that their results stay the same, go up or go down. Following a re-mark, students’
work will be sent for external moderation by the exam board. At this stage students’ results may also stay the same, go up or go down. Hertswood
Academy has adopted a policy to deal with this subject, copies of which can be found on our website at www.hertswoodacademy.org/exams.
Learning from Roman Artefacts by the Inclusion Team
On Tuesday 20th February, a group of fifteen students from Years 7 to 11 had the chance
to get hands-on with Roman artefacts on a visit to the Verulamium Museum in St Albans.
After being welcomed the group split in two, each half having a group session with one of
the expert museum staff. They discussed different aspects of Roman civilization, with the
students keen to show the knowledge they already had, as well as to ask an array of
questions. Then came time to hold history in the palms of their hands, from authentic
pottery to tools, as well as trying on replicas of Roman armour, helmets and shields.
Later on, the group toured the museum in full, with displays containing coins, utensils,
religious artefacts and even graves! The museum houses some fantastic, enormous
mosaics covering large sections of the walls, which are amazing to see and touch, and
inspired many of the students to test their artistic skill by creating their own. The group
behaved wonderfully and came away having learned a lot about Roman life and culture.
We’d like to thank the staff of the museum for the time they spent with the students.
