What is a Foundation Degree?Foundation Degrees are university level degreecourses that offer an exciting work-based alternativeto the traditional university route. This programme focuses on the visualcommunication of texts and concepts. You will usea wide range of techniques including traditionaldrawing, printmaking and digital technologiesthroughout studies.

Year 1 modules – Semester AWork Based Learning: Developing Professional and Employability SkillsThis module will help you to focus on planning yourcareer and developing employability andprofessional skills. You will take a closer look atthe creative and culture sector to identify a routethat best suits and reflects your strengths andpreferences whilst preparing you for progression bylooking at job-hunting techniques, networking andself-promotion. You will articulate your skills andknowledge to create an action plan for progressionusing appropriate writing skills.

Historical and Contemporary ContextThis module will develop your creative, cultural andcritical understanding of Illustration and the creativework it can produce. You will be introduced toseveral historical and contemporary periods ormovements and examine and identify the waysin which the time, place and conditions of theirproduction influenced and shaped creativity andpractice. This will enable you to develop yourresearch abilities, critical faculties and academicskills so that you can investigate, analyse andpresent your case effectively.

Creative Problem SolvingThis module has been designed to prepare you forfurther study and the workplace. You will gain anunderstanding of the key production processes andprofessional practices relevant to Illustration and thecultural and creative industries, in addition tolearning methods of conceptualising creativity andauthorship.

Entry requirements48 points, including one GCE A2, a BTEC NationalDiploma/Certificate or equivalent. Plus GCSE Mathsand English Language at grade 4 or above. Youmay be asked to attend an interview with a portfolioof work.

Mature students with GCSE grade C or aboveEnglish language and maths or equivalent, butlacking traditional level 3 qualifications will beconsidered on the basis of relevant experience andan appropriate portfolio of work.

If English is not your first language, you will need anIELTS score of 6.0 or 80 IBT or equivalent.

How will I be assessed?The assessment of the programme is all based oncoursework in the form of practical and writtenassignment. Coursework may be based on bothindividual work and group work.

What will I learn?This higher education qualification develops yourdesign and practical skills to standards that willimpress potential clients that you will deal with. Themodules prepare you for a career in Illustration,where you could be supplying work for publishinghouses, design groups, advertising agencies andother commercial enterprises.

Progression routesStudents who pass the Foundation Degree mayprogress to study the BA Professional Studies orthe BA Graphic Design and Illustration. Contextual StudiesThis module provides an introduction tocontemporary critical perspectives in the theory andpractice of the creative arts to provide a frame ofreference for Illustration. Through the examination ofcreative practices within a variety of historical, socio-political, aesthetic and institutional contexts you willlearn the basis for critical examination in practice.

Portfolio Development: IllustrationThis module enables you to build to explore,develop and apply the professional skills neededto build a portfolio of work for progression toemployment or further study within your specialistfield of illustration. Through the use of a broad rangeof creative, technical and physical processes, youwill develop your understanding of:• Professional practice• Audience/ client requirements• Professional constraints

Cultural and Ethical DebateThis module will cover theme based explorations ofthe influences that shape creative messages ina range of contexts. You will develop awarenessof how social and cultural constructs are formed,evolve, and are challenged and used to influencefuture developments considering issues such as;consumption globalization, sustainability, race,gender diversity and the role of stereotypes.

Final Major Project: IllustrationThis module will provide the opportunity to put allyour experience and learning in a project togetherin a project that confirms your role as a creativeprofessional illustrator. To ensure that you meet themodule requirements the brief will be negotiatedbetween you and your tutors. In some disciplinesthis project will form the main part of your end ofcourse show.
