Herrnhut – Origin of the Worldwide Moravian ChurchThe origins of the Moravian Church or the UnitasFratrum (the Unity of the Brethren) reach back toBohemia and Moravia in the year of 1457. In 1722,Herrnhut was founded by Protestant religiousrefugees from Moravia on the estate of CountNikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, who stronglymoulded the pietistic character of the town. Soon they started their worldwide mission acti -vity which, in the course of time, resulted innumerous independent Provinces of the world -wide Moravian Church.Herrnhut’s »Großer Saal«, as the Sanctuary issometimes known in the Moravian Church, is boththe spiritual and civic centre of the town. It is the»Living Room« of the congregation. The Hutbergaltan, a look-out tower, is the town’semblem. It stands on the basalt top of Hutberg hill, right above the impressive grounds of the Gottes -acker (the Burial Ground or God’s Acre). From thetop of the hill you can enjoy a marvellouspanorama.

Documents, paintings and different kinds of historic material from five centuries of the Moravian Church are kept in the Unity Archives(Moravian Archive). It is the central archive andthus the most important facility of this kind for theworldwide Moravian Church.Three years before each calendar year, theLosungen (the Daily Texts / Daily Watchwords) ofthe Moravian Church are drawn from Old Testa-ment verses in Herrnhut. Translated into morethan fifty languages, they are read by Christians allover the world. Being used as a devotional book, the Daily Watchwords / Daily Texts have a keyposition in the Christian world.

The expression of the Christian faith within thecongregation’s life in Herrnhut has led to variousforms of meetings and worship which, though havingbeen developed further in the course of time, havealso been preserved according to tradition downthrough the years and are still practised today.
