5A home and its rooms will denote its owners territory, defining a very personal space and expressing a way of life to all who enter.

As such, at Herrington Gate Furniture, we believe that those spaces justify the most exacting of attention to detail and we have put that ethos at the heart of our business as we undertake the creation of high quality bespoke interiors.

With almost 20 years of experience, our benchmark standards are high. Our commissions have come from a range of quarters: the streets of Whitehall, a Mallorcan island retreat, a contemporary mansion in our native North East of England to name just a few. Each property is unique and each client has a different goal so we have no need for set ranges, themes or price lists, as each project is considered individually. Whether someone is seeking to furnish a traditional listed residence with attention to period detail, or fashion aminimalist showcase of contemporary design with a new build from scratch, we believe our knowledge and design versatility are second to none.

We take very seriously the need to understand our client and apply our design skills appropriately to take account of the building, the room function and the desired final ambience.

On a very practical note we are well-versed in producing plans for architects, builders and other trades to work to, and can liaise with other professionals on and off site to ensure the smooth running of a project. We can research and source materials and appliances from all corners of the world and have a network of close contacts with a number of exclusive suppliers.

We take our inspiration from design heroes of the past, the ever-evolving contemporary world and ultimately our clients wishes which, when mixed with Herrington Gates unique flair, can result in the most defining interior design solutions for todays lifestyles, and tomorrows.

The kitchen/dining space combines with a modern garden room where Tanganika wooden liners frame the open plan doorway to the dining area.

A bar/entertaining area, featuring an ebonised Ash bar top and mirrored knee space, separates the main kitchen from the remaining area.

The Tanganyika ceiling feature above the bar area frames the TV.

The view above shows the curved Tanganika cabinetry using pre-dyed Italian veneers, a mirror finished built-in bottle cooler sits behind the bar and a bespoke cocktail sink leads to the continuing Tanganika door linings beyond.

The detailed view of the cocktail sink to the right shows the mirror finished stainless steel work surface blending into dedicated drinks, ice and condiment trays.

SLEEK ENTERTAINING

A cohesive look was called for in this large T-shaped kitchen, day-room and dining area where Herrington Gate designed the whole scheme including ceiling and lighting features.

Simple handle-less painted perimeter furniture, in the kitchen, combines with stainless steel, Iron Ore Silestone and walnut, which is echoed in the sliding double doors to the hallway giving the ground floor an open plan feel.

Right: The kitchen area is dominated by a large feature island with curved breakfast bar top made from solid walnut and finished with burnishing lacquers for a high gloss sheen. The pendant lights have been organised to fall from the ceiling following the shape of the breakfast bar and reflect in the grey tinted mirrors above the Aga area.

COLONIAL COASTAL KITCHEN

Echoes of colonial style combined with sandy paint tones conjure up the windswept beaches of the Northumberland coastal location of this grand kitchen. Tall double height painted cabinets flank the four oven Aga with mirrored splashback.

STYLISH EDWARDIAN VILLA

The large area of this kitchen space brings togetherwalnut and painted cabinetry, with stainless steel and mirror finish detailing, centred around the large lilac Aga.

The stepped recessed ceilings with concealed LED were designed around existing structural steelwork, following an extension to the room.

The large walnut island has 3 bowed ends with open bookcases and walnut breakfast bar top. A recessed Westin ceiling extractor sits above the cooking side of the island, with a larger bespoke extractor situated above the Aga.

The breakfasting area has leather bench seating, the table with twin semi-circular pedestals and shadow gap detail matches the island cabinetry. Note the Venetian style patio doors to the garden.

Fold away pocket doors reveal the Larder cupboard interior when open. A granite preparation work surface is included in the interior, used for coffee and toast preparation, with drawer storage below.

Wander through to the day room in this house, and the furniture takes on a very different tone. Throughout, Italian pre-dyed Birds Eye Maple veneers have been used to give elegant silvery hues, highlighting the unusual grain of this timber on the floating cabinetry.

The low level coffee table utilizes the same silver tinted veneer which contrasts with the central leather effect element.

OPULENT ENTERTAINING

The silvered ash tones and tulip style pedestals from the hallway tables are echoed in the dining room furniture. Luxurious deep studded chairs have mirror finish stainless steel shoes to their ebony legs.

The silvered ash table top is further embellished with mother-of-pearl and ebony inlays.

CONTEMPORARY LIVING - DINING ROOM

Contemporary lines in the context of this complete rural home redesign. Very definite criteria from our client were to allow for 10 dining guests, with bar, cooking and dishwashing facilities on hand for easy entertaining. Wenge was the chosen material for the cabinetry.

To conceal the functional side of the room, Herrington Gate developed a wall of grey leather trimmed doors within a wenge framework with bespoke wenge handles. Centrally, sliding doors disappear into recessed pockets built within the cabinetry to allow diners access to the Garden Room.

To either side, bi-fold doors push back into the cabinetry to reveal a bar with Sub Zero fridge, and kitchen facilities with mirror finish stainless steel work surfaces.

As necessary, the doors fold closed to conceal any mess and carefully positioned lighting washes down over the grey hide trim of the doors.

Below: During renovation work, when an unexpected cavity was uncovered in the wall, Herrington Gate transformed it into a discreet wenge and grey leather log store to serve the adjacent open fire.

FARMHOUSE GRANDEUR

Inspired by French classical styles, an arched solid Oak door leads to this kitchen, centred around a free standing island, complete with dresser with sliding doors, and a rustic table with feature bench seats.

A pair of bronze chandeliers complement the design.

There are open plinths to the Pippy Oak cabinetry housing a large French farmhouse sink beneath a stone mullioned window giving views over the garden.

Left: A miniature stone mullioned window offers borrowed light between staircase and kitchen, also working as an architectural feature within the overall scheme.

The oversized pendant handles make a statement on the painted dresser, whilst strong pedestal detail characterises the rustic breakfasting table and benches.

WALNUT DECO

A modern scheme which complements the architectural style of this 1920s suburban home. Two interconnecting rooms - a kitchen and a bar/entertainment room. Statement black glass, walnut and stainless steel define the kitchen area. The connection to the adjacent bar room and the walk-in pantry is made by huge frame-less glass pivot doors with thin etched lines reflecting the 20s style original cornicing.

SHADES OF GREY

A subtle combination of fine grey painted cabinetry, industrial stainless steel and dark Oak worktops blend together to create an elegant kitchen within this original Dairy building.

Opposite: The circular peninsula furniture has radius cabinet doors and pot board shelving below for pan storage. The half moon join between the contrasting Stainless Steel and Oak work surfaces discreetly echoes the circular theme. In the background, the large La Cornue oven makes an impressive focal point.

Architectural glazed screens rather than doors are used to demarcate areas, but still allow a free-flowing open plan configuration to the ground floor.

Note the seamless Stainless Steel work surface including secondary sink, creating a professional style dedicated food preparation area. The French caf espresso machine is a must in this coffee connoisseur's kitchen.

This Master Bedroom suite consists of 3 distinct areas within a large open-plan space. Contemporary vertical wicket stump style screens are carefully placed to define the different areas of Bedroom,Dressing room and Bathroom, whilst maintaining the open plan flow of the room.Feature contemporary chandeliers illuminate reading and jewellery areas.

In the dressing room, the sliding wardrobe doors are painted in Farrow and Balls Elephants Breath tocontrast with the rich walnut and a deep studded long stool serves for putting on shoes. At the other end of the dressing room, the island is elegantly lit from above with a chandelier to match that of the bedsides and seating area, and the wicket stump divider leads the eye through to the open plan bathroom.

The walnut bed frame is headed by a complete wall of landscape leather pads and tinted mirrored panels. The bow-fronted ottoman at the base of the bed ties in with the floating bedside tables.

The en-suite echoes the use of walnut and features a floating twin bowl vanity unit, with the mirrors above concealing wall-recessed cabinets, flanked by Porta Romana wall lights. The private toilet and shower areas are accessed through frame-less tinted glass doors to the left.

The bow-fronted bath panel and the vanity unit are topped with Iron Ore Silestone.

In the Master bedroom suite, the bed frame and side cabinets are made from ebonised Ash with black croc skin inlays.The contrasting white painted wardrobe furniture is also trimmed with white croc skin and has mirror finish stainless steel details.The bed sits below the intricate ceiling design featuring a lowered raft.

The grand obelisk four poster bed dominates this master boudoir suite, the ottoman to the foot of thebed discreetly conceals an automatic TV. All of the furniture features snake skin inlays and mirror finishedstainless steel. The bedside cabinets also have a pull-out reading shelf specifically requested by our clients.An esuite dressing room and bathroom is door-less but deep panelled reveals define the entrance.

Part of a complete house refurbishment, this cutting edge bedroom suite juxtaposes wenge and Corian for a sleek minimalist look. Herrington Gate made the wenge open-louvre shutters which allow someone to see out when closed. The dressing table, TV cabinet and window seat are all crafted from clay coloured Corian.

This monochrome Master bedroom and dressing area pay homage to the irrefutable hallmarks of Coco Chanel style. GUEST SUITE, CAMPAIGN STYLE

Colonial style louvred screens, made from tropical wood wenge, demarcate the areas of this guest suite offering a feature wall behind the bed with dressing area behind housing furniture made in Corian. The same louvred screens replaced the original conventional wall and doorway to the en-suite, giving a semi-open plan feel.

All electrical and water services were concealed inside the wenge framework.

Campaign style legs to the bedside tables blend into the colonial look.

An inner hall houses a neo-classical console table of Sycamore and Walnut with marquetry to the mirror above.

This bed, with wicket stump headboard in Zebrano, is flanked by modern bedside cabinets with sleigh bed legs. The chaise with mirror finish stain-less steel legs is upholstered in Ostrich skin fabric.

Through the Zebrano door with matching frame and architrave, the en-suite has letter box wall cabinets with free-standing toolbox storage,all with grain cut feature.

Adjacent rooms: A distinctive walnut and tinted mirror door with horizontal etching opens into a downstairs Cloakroom with inset vertical mirror stripes to the painted cabinetry.

A GRAND GENTLEMANS RETREAT

This study pays homage to Walnut. Tall glazed walnut bookcases are separated by traditional fluted pillars. The panels to the base cabinets and the fireplace wall are made of book matched burr walnut. The centre panel above the fireplace houses a concealed TV screen operated by remote control from the partners desk.

ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE

Inside the study/music room, the sliding pocket doors can be seen closed, the doors are trimmed with hide and have bespoke black chrome circular handles. This finish is echoed in the doors to the tall storage area housing our clients mixing decks.

SLATE AND WALNUT - SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED

Presented with an unsightly shell of a modern extension to a 1920s house, Herrington Gate created real impact with the design of this focal point bar area. Suggesting grey slate and exposed steel to clad the existing structure to be used as a canopy to the proposed bar area, and the use of black glass and walnut in the cabinetry and striking pendant lighting, gave the space added drama.

THE BUSINESS OF BUILDING

Herrington Gate Furniture was entrusted with the task of redesigning the Board Room for the North East headquarters of the National house builders Bellway PLC. The furniture was designed to capture the grandeur of the large country house headquarters, and centres around a large barrel-shaped boardroom table, to seat 14, with juxtaposed grain feature to the table top.

A rich dark wood suited to the drama of the cinema, Macassar Ebony provides the focal point for this contemporary media room accessed via uber-sized sliding doors which are clad in walnut to match the furniture of the hallway side.

WYNYARD HALL BAR

This magnificent Hall, built originally from the wealth gained from the local mining industry, is now a prominent hotel and venue. The bar was designed and built to match the original doors in the background of this image - doors of 4" thick mahogany, and made so tall so that the original owners could ride through the hall on horseback! Burr mahogany panels were created with black enamelled carvings and columns to look like part of the original furniture of the house.

COUNTRY HOME STUDY

This countryside study is made from Pippy Oak, visible from the landing through open plan architectural screens which afford privacy to the area but allow light to flood in. The box bay window has Oak mullions and Bronze casements and a window seat conceals a radiator below.

Chicken wire is inset into cabinet doors and screens and the hand carved ball and claw feet to the corner desk were specifically requested by our client.

CONTEMPORARY LIVING - LOUNGE

Part of a complete house refurbishment undertaken by Herrington Gate, the sunken nature of this open plan ground floor space demarcates the lounge area, dominated by a dramatic suspended chandelier, leading the eye up to the first floor open gallery above, with its recessed wenge and smoked glass storage set against stark white walls.

Below, the TV is housed in a wenge media unit with tall stores to either side.

The clean lines of Corian define the low level coffee table lined internally with wenge.

A dramatic 2 storey chimney breast, finished in polished plaster, rises up through the first floor to house a double-sided fire which serves both living and dining areas. A concealed log store is recessed into the wall to the right and to the left, in the floor; an automatic glass hatch opens to reveal a spiral stone staircase leading to the basement games room.

The polished plaster finish of the chimney breast can be seen cutting through the first floor galleried area between the wenge pigeon hole shelving.

The glazed cover to the spiral staircase opens at the flick of a switch to lead down to the games room. A wenge wine store wraps around the spiral staircase, whilst wicket stump style screens frame the entrance to the room complete with Herrington Gate designed pool table made from bronze Corian with a slate bed. Matching wenge cabinetry houses a bar, TV unit and darts board.

CLASSICALLY CARVED ENGLISH OAK CABINETRY.

Raised and fielded multi-panelled doors are flanked by fluted pillars with hand carved capitals in this atrium area. Detailed cornicing has a carved inscription of a family motto and the bowed cabinetry with curved cornice and skirting leads to a window seat which conceals a radiator.

The very grand (Arc de Triomphe) portico inner entrance ties in with the style of the cabinetry and has a contrasting painted finish. This leads to an open plan media room.

Sliding pocket corner doors allow this study to be sealed off or elegantly opened up to the rest of the open plan living space in this contemporary home. The walnut and wenge doors match the materials of the partners desk and the cabinetry featuring mirrored sliding door storage.

The clients brief asked for the whole of the downstairs of this house to have separate rooms but at the same time be open plan for entertaining purposes. Herrington Gates answer was to use sliding pocket doors throughout, which could recess discreetly into the wall space, as though they had never been there. The materials used reflect that of the cabinetry in the corresponding rooms.

In this exclusive residence, a pivoting entrance door leads to a long hallway, with full height painted panelling throughout. There are mirror finish stainless steel inlays to the panelled pilasters that flank the sliding glass door to the kitchen/living area, which hint to the more contemporary tone that lies beyond.

This tall pivot door provides the main entrance of this fine Arts and Crafts style mansion with fine views of the Cathedral in Durham City.

CONTEMPORARY LIVING - ENTRANCES

Herrington Gate worked on this complete house refurbishment but entrances were key features in terms of aesthetics and practicality.

The sleek modern driveway gates are made from solid steel plate with oak cladding bolted on both sides. The horizontal board style of the gates is echoed in the main entrance door - a wide pivot door, clad in oak to the outside and wenge to the inside, with almost full length stainless steel handle. This design follows through to the rest of the internal doors to the house.

Right: A simple but extra wide staircase has modern wicket stump balustrades from wenge to one side. To the other side, the hand-rail is recessed into the wall, framed with wenge and lit with LEDs.

Formerly the "Old Men's Baccy" - a 1930's smoking shelter - this unusual building could now be no further from its insalubrious origins.Herrington Gate have transformed the building both outside and in. Fine handmade bricks now form the outer skin with stone mullioned Gothic styled Oak windows and front door allowing visitors a hint of what lies within..

The Design Process The name Michael Stephenson has become synonymous with the individuality and gilt edge standards of Herrington Gate Furniture.

As original company founder nearly 20 years ago, Michael still injects the same creativity, and maintains the same personal interest in every project that the company handles, no matter how large or small.

Michael's design and the team's carpentry skills are still at the core of this bespoke interior business, and from a newly built in-house designedmanufacturing base, Herrington Gate Furniture now boasts one of themost technically advanced production facilities anywhere in the UK.

Herrington Gate Furniture is Michael Stephenson, and the creativity of his Design Team, and the skills of his specialist carpentry and installationteams are the core of this totally unique architectural interior furniture and design business.

Dealing with Michael and the team, from initial discussions to project completion, is a smooth and stress-free experience with the whole process being uniquely tailored to each client.

He and the Design Team work tirelessly to get to know the client... to understand their desires and expectations... and in the achievement of these goals, they will use their extensive understanding of the marketplace to investigate and research timbers, materials, fabrics, fitments and period detailing, to create an authentic match to the material needs of the client, and the Architectural characteristics of the property... supported by an ethos of attention to detail without compromise.

Design Drawings are developed using Computer Aided Design facilities.Concept drawings, finished elevations, or specific detailing can be emailedanywhere in the world to better facilitate the decision-making process.Detailed computer generated imagery (Cgis), as illustrated on the oppositepage, can also be produced to fully communicate the overall and detailedeffect of a finished design, so there are no disappointments - only projectsto be proud of.

Our design team is confident and experienced in dealing with architects,builders and other trades so can help a project flow seamlessly from initial dreams and sketches through to a beautiful, and very real, finished product.

EXAMPLE PROJECT: MEDIEAVAL GUEST ACCOMMODATION

These plans illustrate Herrington Gates thought processes and proposals to the owner ofa period vicarage with medieaval guest wing. Our response to his brief included designs for a guest kitchen, living and dining rooms, a games room with bespoke billiard table, media area, orangery and a study with a secret door, concealed within furniture, to house a prized personal collection of Formula 1 memorabilia. We also advised on sofas and soft furnishings.

EXAMPLE PROJECT: TYTHE BARN LEISURE COMPLEX

This somewhat eccentric brief came from a famous name in the world of F1 racing, whose Tithe Barn was to be accessed from the wine cellar of the main house via a 50m underground tunnel.

The Herrington Gate scheme for this barn includes a swimming pool with fold down drawbridge to a gym and hisnhers changing rooms, massage and beauty treatment room, a wet lounge with sauna and shower and games mezzanine. An additional dry lounge area with full kitchen and media area is accessed via 2 sets of climate controlling sliding doors. A self-contained wine cellar is set behind frameless glass screens, Herrington Gate designed space for an open plan car museum with mezzanine glass floors to afford maximum views of the clients classic racing car display. The complex is rounded off with an underground squash court.

THE LOUBOUTIN DRESSING ROOM

The most important room of the house is my dressing room were words from the brief from the owner of this North Yorkshire Grade1 listed country mansion set in a 100 acre estate, so Herrington Gate delivered a room befitting the title.

Two large but separate rooms were amalgamated to create a dressing room on 2 levels with cabinetry to not only house, but to elegantly display, over 100 pairs of Louboutin shoes, and a similar number of handbags, along with jewellery and other accessories. Storage needed to allow for an expansion of the shoe and handbag collection as well as to afford ample wardrobe space to the clients clothing collection.

The tinted mirror wardrobe doors conceal a host of internal features, including a retractable dressing table. Lighting is recessed into the ceiling above.

Walnut steps connect the 2 areas, and walnut linings to this open plan door area feature built-in illuminated hand bag display shelving. A walnut ladder allows access to higher level displays.

There are 10 tall glazed mirror-backed shoe stores which are all illuminated, on pull-out mechanisms; these units punctuate the art deco design of the tinted mirror wardrobe doors. An elliptical glass-topped island unit is central to the upper area.

Bespoke Furniture - BespokeProduction Facility As we struggled to find a factory facility to meet our exacting needs and standards, we took our own advice and used our skills to do what we do best - to design and build our own bespoke manufacturing facility.

Our brief to ourselves: an exterior to inspire, and to convey a level of design excellence befitting our reputation; an interior to be practical, to give us segregat-ed preparation, machining, assembly and finishing areas with the most technically advanced equipment in our field, giving flow and connection to ancillary planning, office and client space.

The result: The HG Building - a 22,000 sq ft building displaying a level of architectural design not normally associated with a functional production facility. The HG Building has a presence and a landmark quality which echoes all that is at the essence of Michael Stephenson and the Herrington Gate philosophy.

The final specification: The exterior fuses a palate of modern materials, blending Iroko - a sustainable species of teak - with exposed steel and glass, brought together with aluminium cladding powder-coated in a carefully selected shade of slate grey.

Internally it is no ordinary facility: State of the art machinery characterises the machining area, utilised to the full by our dedicated team of craftsmen. Here, and in the assembly area, huge photographs and plans of past projects cover the walls as a reminder of previous achievements to be equalled, or bettered. A frameless glass wall, with automatic doors, allows full visual but a practical sound buffer between this area and the Production Office.

The energy efficiency of the whole building focuses around the vast heating and extraction system, as pictured above, all wood waste from production is the sole fuel supply for heating to the building.

Throughout the production and presentation areas the slate grey and warm timber themes from the exterior are continued in the fixtures and fittings, furniture and storage. Touch screen operation of intelligent lighting, heating, security, external planting irrigation and air conditioning systems are based in this area.

A bespoke staff kitchen and chill-out zone with full media facilities ensure thatemployees are not forgotten in our desire to achieve design excellence, even the toilet facilities feature Porcelanosa tiles, polished concrete floors and Smoked Ash cubicles. A wet room facility makes cycling or jogging to work a viable option with staff able to arrive in time to shower before the day starts.

The Presentation Suite is no less than expected, with a scheme of Smoked Ash, grey glass and LED lighting against a wall of slate. Three wall mounted flat screens and two further desk screens allow clients to benavigated around complex designs, enabling cross referencing with an infinite number of library images from many sources and allowing them a vision of their finished project from our boardroom table.

Not only the physical design elements, but also the detailed attention to the ease of functionality of this whole building, for both staff and clients alike, are clear illustrations of the all encompassing Herrington Gate approach to each project, and indeed the very personality of the company, whether we aredesigning for ourselves, or for our clients.

THE RETURN OF THE MINI MOKE

Walnut and Silver

The Mini Moke was originally produced as a light off-road vehicle for the army with the final model rolling off the production line in 1993, but since then has become something of a cult car, popular with the rich and famous.

Using our well-honed skills for design in wood, Herrington Gate rescued, from the automobile gutter, this original classic Mini Moke to evolve it into a vehicle which has since covered thousands of miles on road trips around Paris, Monte Carlo, St Tropez, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.

Aside its reconditioned 1275GT engine, the fabric of the car was completely rebuilt. The interior includes dashboard and seats handcrafted by Herrington Gate and trimmed in Alcantara, Herrington Gate - crafted walnut components including running boards with macassar ebony inlays, windscreen framing, side compartments, lights linings, bumper bars and grills to the engine bay.

Sahara Beige and Oak

Spurred on by excitement from, and enquiries about, the walnut and silver model, Herrington Gate rescued yet another Mini Moke which we call The Sahara Beige. With an equally comprehensive rebuild, the final finish was in oak and Sahara beige hide.
