We plan to start building before the end of the year. For the past 3 years the parish council and volunteers from our community, have been working together to realise the dream of a new community centre for the people of Herne and Broomfield.
Despite some hiccups along the way, a lot has been achieved so far, including extensive public consultation, gaining planning permission and fundraising. We would like to say a big thank you to all of you that have supported us and have been involved.
We have raised money for the project through our fundraising events, from the parish precept and grant providers.
We are now preparing the documents ready for tender. We do not have enough money to complete the project yet. We will need to furnish and equip the new centre, so we are asking for your help please.
There are a number of ways that you can be involved. We are asking everyone to consider:
Making a cash donation or if you have business contacts that could
offer a large discount, we will be in need of many things including: computers, crockery, a television, tables, chairs, chair trolleys, cupboards, curtains, hand driers and much more.
Donating a raffle or tombola prize for one of our events.
Running a fundraising event
Perhaps you would like to sponsor a room or a specific piece of equipment, let us know.

The Parish of St Martin in Herne and St Peter’s
Greenhill Community Outreach.
A group from St. Martin’s Church are organising a series of Outreach
events that are intended to encourage the wider Community to appreciate St. Martin’s both as an historic building and for its value for purposes other than traditional services.
Over the weekend of July 2/3rd, we are holding a Photographic Competition organised for us by the Herne Bay Photographic Club. The subject will be St. Martin’s Church, either its interior or exterior, and there will be classes for children as well as adults. Full details are included in the Terms and Conditions available via this link: http://www.hbphotoclub.co.uk.
The weekend of July 16/17th will see our Herne Community Festival take place to be opened by the Sheriff of Canterbury, Councillor Robert Jones. On Saturday, from 11.00, the focus will be on as many local groups and associations as we can accommodate to set up stall inside or, weather permitting, outside St. Martin’s to publicise themselves and to entertain our visitors at the same time. The Scouts are running a BBQ, and the Goody micro-brewery from up the road are
producing a special beer for us, the aptly named ‘Good Samaritan’ brew, so no one need go hungry or thirsty! A number of local groups are already signed up, so if your organisation would like to join them, please phone or email the address below. On Sunday afternoon, from 2pm, the emphasis will be on performance with a line up of song, dance, and music groups headed, we hope, by a well known local Concert Band and culminating with a grand community sing song. As for Saturday, if your group would like to take part in our Sunday activities, please make use of the contact details below.
On September 16th, we plan to commemorate the centenary of the death at the Battle of the Somme of Cpt. William Charles Woollett who was closely associated with the Church. In the morning we shall have a talk describing the events and the conditions that would have confronted William and the thousands of others who were involved. This will be illustrated by various artefacts that we have including the wooden battlefield cross that marked his initial resting place. In the afternoon there will be a simple memorial service attended by members of the Woollett family at which a local school choir will sing.
Please come along to some or all of our events or, better still, take part! John Bennett 01227 637813 or [email protected].

This term has been an interesting one with our families and friends bringing in their pets for the children to see. We had visits from a snake, terrapins, a dog, a pony and a rabbit. It was lovely to see the children grow in confidence as they approached and handled the animals.
In January we celebrated Chinese New Year with a lovely Chinese meal prepared by the children. We had great fun with our pancake races on Shrove Tuesday too. We are now enjoying the spring flowers and plants that are starting to appear in the gardens and hedgerows
and which have given the children inspiration for some colourful art work. We enjoyed our Easter preparations making Easter Eggs and having our annual Easter Egg hunt. On our last day we had a coffee morning and Easter Bonnet Parade. It was as lovely event with the added bonus of raising money to buy plants for our summer garden.
We have spaces available for children aged 2-5 years. Funding is available for eligible children, We are open in term time five mornings a week. Contact us on [email protected] or Tel . 07754 068304 (during playgroup hours).

Herne & Broomfield Local History Group Report An exciting event in March has been the launch of our new book, Suffragette Seaside. Extensive researches by Group members Mandy Boxall and Linda Bowditch have uncovered a fascinating and hitherto untold story of how the Women's Suffrage movement developed in Herne Bay,
supported by local families, particularly by women residing in Beltinge. Leader of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) Millicent Garrett Fawcett visited Herne Bay nearly a hundred years ago in October 1916, when she delivered a speech in peaceful support of the cause at the original Pier Theatre.
Members of the History Group dressed in Edwardian Suffragette costume, supported the book launch at the Seaside Museum William Street. Suffragette Seaside which includes detailed biographies of local families involved, costs £5.00 and is available from Group officers as below, or at our meetings.
Our recent meetings have been very popular with full
capacity attendance in the Institute Hall. In November 2015 Lee Ault from the Broadstairs Society, gave a fascinating talk entitled Rationed Fashion - Clothes of the 1940’s. Lee produced many examples of vintage items of clothing such as; baby clothes and ladies underwear from parachute silk and smart suits and coats from discarded military uniforms.
In February this year Valerie Millo, Group Treasurer gave an illustrated talk on Canterbury Cathedral – A Greeters Guide. Herself a Greeter, Valerie showed us some of the unusual features to be found in the Cathedral.
Subjects for the remainder of the season include; Dover in the 19th century and local Bricks and Brickmaking. The next meeting of the Group will be on Tuesday April 5th when author and journalist Anthony Poulton-Smith will talk on Origins of Kentish place names.
Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30 pm at the Institute Hall, Canterbury Road, Herne - opposite Strode Park CT6 7HE. Visitors @ £2.00 are welcome. For more information contact Chairman Alan Dilnot on 01227 373695 or Secretary Sylvia McKean 01227 281257.

Local pub joins forces with local church to light up village
The ancient church of St Martin’s in Herne and its 400 year old Yew Tree was lit up with lasers thanks to the generosity of regulars from neighbouring pub The Smugglers Inn.
The traditional ‘Carols round the Yew Tree’ usually enjoyed by the whole village every year looked in jeopardy when the lights in the ancient tree failed to work. A spokesperson for the church said “We didn’t know what we could do to make this happen this year, the tree is so big and close to the road that it would have been too difficult, dangerous and expensive to set up new lights in time”.
Regulars at The Smugglers Inn, however, were already on the case and both the building and the Yew tree were laser lit as a result.
St Martin’s Church and the community in Herne have recently launched a major fundraising initiative to embark on a comprehensive repair and restoration programme, which will begin in 2016. The Church has received approval for Heritage Lottery Funding to
support this project but there is still a significant shortfall to make up. Curate of the Parish, Rev. Estella Last said: “Somewhere in the region of 2,000 people will come through the doors of the church over the Christmas period to recognise and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. It is important that we as a community are able to preserve this beautiful building so that it is available for many future generations to do the same. We are very grateful to everyone at The Smugglers Inn for their help with the evening’s traditional carol sing.”
Collections from Christmas services at St Martin’s will be shared with local charities Porchlight and Catching Lives, the Canterbury Diocese’s Advent Justice Appeal and the Children’s Society.
Contributions to the St Martins Church Restoration Fund can be made through the St Martin’s Church JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/stmartinsherne and further information about forthcoming Christmas services is available on the church’s website www.st-martin-in-herne.org/stmartins and Facebook page ‘St Martin’s in Herne’.
For further information please contact: Curate Rev. Estella Last on 07951607334 or Churchwarden Nigel Newton on 01227 374466

Message from Elaine Richardson - December 2015
"A big thank you to all the community of Herne, Broomfield, Greenhill, Eddington and surround, for all your love and
support in our community ventures over the last 8 years whilst I have been vicar."
"In clearing my study, a mammoth task, I have been reminded of so many times we had fun together, from the extensive 700 year celebrations to dancing with the people of Greenhill. We have shared times of sadness and hardship, times when you have come alongside the church in support (church fire and lead roof thefts for example) or shared times of celebration in so many precious weddings and the birth and baptisms of babies and older people. You have allowed me to come alongside working ( no... playing ) with your children at the toddlers groups, both nurseries, our schools and youth clubs."
"I have so loved being in the parish and will take memories of you all with me into retirement. Thank you for the privilege of sharing your community, with my husband Jim and I, for the last 8 years. I pray that God Blesses you all every day.”
The Parish of St Martin in Herne The Parish was very sorry to learn that our vicar, Elaine Richardson, has had to take early retirement due to ill health. She will be greatly missed. During the past eight years she has worked tirelessly for the parish, quietly and steadfastly supported by her husband, Jim. She has thrown herself whole heartedly into both church and community affairs, worked hard with both our schools - determined that they maintain outstanding grades for religious education and that staff and pupils were cared for pastorally - and many members of the community have been very grateful for her love and care and pastoral support.
Elaine and Jim have moved to Wales and we wish them a long, healthy and happy retirement.
The process to appoint a new vicar is now underway but is likely to take up to nine months. In the meantime the churchwardens are responsible for the parish and are extremely fortunate to have the curate, Rev. Estella Last to lead the Ministry Team and the worship. Pricilla Cox, January 2016
St Martin’s Church parish is vast - from Hicks Forstal to the
railway line and from Broomfield to the Share and Coulter -
and is not just the church, Elaine was vicar of all that area.
Little Acorns (Herne) Pre-School
Children enjoyed dressing up for world book day on Wednesday 3rd March. We had beautiful princesses through to superheroes and cowboys.
We had a lovely time with our Easter Bonnet/Hat parade with prizes for the best ones.
Open Afternoon Little Acorns held an open afternoon on Thursday 24th March 2016 for prospective new parents to look around. Due to our current 2 year olds moving up to the 3 & 4 year olds room in September we have limited space in the 3 & 4 year olds room but still have spaces left in the 2 year olds room. We advise parents wanting a place for September to ensure their name is on the waiting list and to book your place with Jackie on: 01227 749317 for the open afternoon.

Kids Takeover Day
On 20 November, 14 pupils from Herne Junior School visited the Seaside Museum in Herne Bay as part of the National Kids in Museums England and Wales initiative. The children displayed pots and mosaics that they had made in school and demonstrated how they had made them.
Part of their afternoon included a story about the Roman ship which was carrying a cargo of pottery and was shipwrecked off the coast of Herne Bay on Pudding Pan Sands. The pots continued to be trawled up in fishermen's nets for centuries and were used by their wives for cooking.
The children spent some time looking round the museum at the exhibits and one of the most popular items in the museum was the 100 year old Penny Slot machine which showed the comic antics of the star of the silent movies, Charlie Chaplin. They also enjoyed being photographed behind the peep-through photo board showing cartoon figures in old fashioned swimsuits.
Parents and grandparents were invited to attend as well as volunteers from the museum and the afternoon ended with biscuits and squash for all.
What’s living in your pond? Do you have a pond in your garden or on your farm? Would you like to know what newts, frogs or toads are living within your pond? If so, the Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group (KRAG) would love to hear from you. Following on from a successful study in Whitstable, Herne Bay and surrounding areas in 2014 and 2015, local residents and KRAG volunteers Mike Phillips and Claire
Browne are looking to continue their amphibian surveys with new ponds in 2016. KRAG are aiming to establish where our native and non-native amphibians have spread to and how much garden and farm ponds can influence the successful spread of these species, particularly in built up areas. If you live in CT6 postcode area and would like to find out more or would be happy for us to carry out one or more torchlight surveys of your pond shortly after dark during March-June then please contact Claire Browne at [email protected] or on 07800 738187.
Thanks Alan Many thanks to Cllr Alan Marsh our County Councillor who has given £500 from his members fund towards our Fun Day and for all his
support throughout the year.

Herne & Broomfield Allotment Association
Please be considerate - Would all residents please be considerate when parking their cars within the Parish.
There are particular problems with cars being parked on the footpath, causing inconvenience to those with pushchairs and mobility problems. We have asked our Warden and Police Community Support Officer to look at the problem and issue tickets to illegally parked vehicles.
There have also been incidents of cars being parked obstructing the gates to both the allotments and
the community park in Ford Road. On one occasion a lady with a broken ankle had to be stretchered several hundred metres by medics who were unable to reach the gate with their ambulance.
Please bear in mind that access to these facilities may be required at anytime day or night and the same applies to farmland gates/entrances where it may be necessary to get in quickly to repair livestock fences or deal with flooding and fallen trees. Your cooperation is very much appreciated.

The National Scams Hub are currently looking at shutting down scam telephone numbers. If you come across mail that claims money has been won and all that is required is to call a phone number then please send a copy of the mail to our community warden, Michelle Weston, (a scanned or photographed copy is fine). Currently the number must be a UK number to be shut down. Once they have at least three people who have received this mail they will be able to make a request for the phone number to be shut down.
All residents are asked to make sure their home is clearly numbered or named.
The test is whether an Ambulance driver would be easily able to identify your house at night if there were no street lights. Apparently many of the complaints of delays to calls for an ambulance through 999, are because the homes from which the call was made could not be easily identified.
Herne WI So far this year, we have had really interesting talks including one on ‘Old Broomfield’, which was illustrated by Mike Bundock with some wonderful old sketches showing Broomfield in the early 20th century. Trying to spot familiar landmarks
made for a good talking-point!
Then we had an enlightening talk on the work of SSAFA, the charity which does so much good for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, given by Major Gerry Bartlett. In March, Chris Wade gave an illustrated talk on the Saxon Shore Way, which follows the original Roman route for 180 miles. We ‘walked’ from Gravesend to Faversham, before running out of time. We definitely want to conclude our fascinating ‘walk’ in the near future, when we should end up in Rye!
We have our annual quiz coming up shortly, when we will endeavour to get the rusty cogs in our brains working! Several things are on the agenda for the next few months, including the Annual Council Meeting being held in Folkestone, our Annual Dinner in May, plus our summer outing in August, which will be a trip on The Pocahontas from Gravesend to Greenwich. Future monthly meetings include talks on ‘Waste not Want not’, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, and ‘The Humorous Side of District Nursing’. A lot to look forward to.
If you fancy an evening in the company of a friendly group of ladies, please give us a try. Visitors are always warmly welcomed. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, except August, at 7.15 p.m. in Herne Institute Hall, Canterbury Road, opposite Strode Park. There is no commitment to join, so do think about it. Brenda Hackett
