The theme of this year’s Heritage Open Days is Edible England.

We are increasingly becoming a nation of foodies and what we eat and drink is at the heart of much of our culture, our history, our communities, and our lives. It’s a doorway into hidden histories, regional differences, and the myriad cultures around us. It’s a universal language and one of our basic needs, the perfect starting point for another diverse and fun, festival year!

From woodland foraging to factory floor, forgotten recipes to regional delicacies, we’ve invited our Sheffield festival community to explore the past, present, and future of our culinary heritage and culture.

Our 2021 Sheffield HODs’ programme includes several examples of Edible England events (as well as many other exciting opportunities). You can learn about and sample international vegetarian food at Broomhill Community Library, learn about beer brewing at the Gardeners Rest pub, forage along the riverside, reminisce over vintage cookbooks at the Central Library, and much more!

We are delighted that England’s biggest festival of history and culture is going ahead between 10-19 September 2021.

The Heritage Open Days Festival is an opportunity to see different places and try out new experiences, all of which are FREE to explore. With over 60 events taking place this year Sheffield is again one of the best places in the country to experience Heritage Open Days, with a wide and varied offering of places to visit and things to do, many of which are specially put on for Heritage Open Days and all of which offer the chance to discover something new and fascinating about Sheffield’s rich history and heritage.

Last year was unprecedented for all of us but we were pleased that HODs 2020 was able to go ahead with some changes to our usual format. For the first time we offered online events as well as in-person opportunities and these were a great success, enabling visitors from further afield and those who prefer to explore from the comfort of their armchairs to participate in the festival. In 2021 we can again offer you an exciting mix of in-person and online activities.

Although Covid-19 government restrictions have been lifted at the time of going to press, many venues will be taking precautions against overcrowding and so advance booking will be required for some activities to ensure safe numbers. Please check if you need to book events in advance, and be prepared to comply with local safety measures.

This brochure gives you information about all the events in and around Sheffield which were registered by July; please check www.heritageopendays.org.uk for the latest updates and information about individual events.

Sheffield Heritage Open Days are coordinated by Sheffield Civic Trust which encourages wider public awareness of Sheffield’s heritage, places, and spaces. Our HODs coordinating committee works hard throughout the year supporting event organisers to bring you the festival in Sheffield. We thank Sheffield City Council for their financial support, and we are pleased to be partners with Create Sheffield, which encourages young people into the arts, culture, and heritage sector. We are also delighted to once again be partnering with the Sheffield Walking Festival and the Castlegate Festival.

We hope you enjoy HODs 2021, and if you would like to be involved in the festival next year, either by organising an event or by joining the coordinating committee, please get in touch!

Sheffield Heritage Open Days

New WaveSheffield Civic Trust, who coordinate the annual Heritage Open Days Festival in the Sheffield area, are delighted to have been chosen as one of a small cohort of HODs organisers across the country to be part of a special HODs programme called New Wave, to develop new, innovative HODs events with special appeal to young adults.

New Wave seeks to push the boundaries of what people expect from Heritage Open Days, widening its appeal to audience groups that we have previously struggled to reach.

Sheffield Civic Trust are proud to be working with the National Videogames Museum to put on a very special HODs event this September which will celebrate Sheffield’s cultural heritage as a world-leading centre of excellence for developing videogames and other digital technology. The NVGM is located within one of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings, Castle House, former home of the B&C Co-op and a Grade II * listed building in Castlegate, at the heart of where the town of Sheffield was born over 900 years ago. The New Wave event will bring together the past and future heritage of Sheffield in a way which is sure to intrigue and delight Heritage audiences old and new.

There will be much more about our special New Wave event nearer the time so keep checking our website and social media channels for more information.

Sheffield Heritage Open Days

Celebrating Sheffield’s Pub HeritageOne of Sheffield’s best-loved pubs, the Gardeners Rest in Neepsend, will be celebrating the Edible England theme of this year’s Heritage Open Days festival with a 10-day celebration of the best in Sheffield ales, gins, and pub snacks. Sheffield has a long tradition of brewing and pub snacks production and so this award-winning Victorian pub, with its famous quirky garden overlooking the river Don, will be paying homage to all that is typically Sheffield: traditional real ale, pork pies, Sheffield cheeses and of course the Sheffield breadcake!

There will also be several talks and tours which focus on the pub’s history and heritage, including an illustrated talk on the history of Sheffield’s allotments (the Gardeners Rest got its name through being the favourite watering hole of local allotment holders), a talk and beer tasting given by a local brewery, and a behind the scenes tour of the pub’s cellars.

There are also two pub heritage walks taking place in the city where you can explore the links between Sheffield’s brewing and industrial history and find out why Sheffield is said to be the ‘real ale capital’ of Britain.
