Great news for those of you who have been suffering 90 degree plus weather every day for the last four months. October marks the first month of cooler weather. The average day time temperature will fall to 84 degree and the average nighttime temperature will be in the neighborhood of 68 degrees.
Cooler temperatures will result in more people taking evening walks and more golfers enjoying our course. Everyone be safe and if you are walking with children or a babe in a stroller – stay on the sidewalks. We have nice sidewalks. No reason to be in the street.
Streets and Speeding- I was asked to add a conversation regarding speeding. Since I have free time on my hands, I decided to spend some time staking out Heritage Harbor Parkway. In no particular order:
1. There are no ‘no parking’ signs. Curbs are not painted yellow or red to designate ‘no parking’. I have seen people parking alongside the curb, especially in the first block where the entrance lakes are located. Of course, you almost always see people sitting on the bank fishing when you have cars parked curbside in this location. By the way, they drive in from other communities because they are not allowed to fish in their own communities.
2. From the front gate to Harbor Lake Drive, the Parkway is wide enough to be a four-lane roadway. After Harbor Lake, the four lanes shrink down to two lanes. Most residents use the wider portion as a four-lane road. They will either drive on the left side or the right side depending upon which way they will be turning. Some people use it as a two-lane road. Occasionally you will get two drivers who are using the road as a four lane get stuck behind a driver who is hugging the center and driving less than the posted speed limit. (no painted center line is confusing). As you can imagine, some drivers have less patience than others. Not worth it.
3. Our streets get a lot of traffic. Not all of it are motor vehicles. Some pedestrians walk on the streets, some cyclists ride on the streets, most skateboarders use the streets…. However, everyone who walks their dogs use the sidewalks. I love furry critters, so that makes a lot of sense to me. However, it does give you cause to pause.
4. That gets us to the subject of speeding. Add parked vehicles, people confused whether it is a two lane or a four lane, people walking or jogging, bicyclists, skateboarders, and someone in a hurry – and you have safety problems. A breakdown in safety can mean injuries and damages. It can also mean fines, citations, or even jail time. Go the speed limit. Both hands on the steering wheel.
Eyes on the road. Give everyone plenty of space. And do not multitask. Not worth it.
As a side note. I have asked four cops if the Parkway is four or two lanes and have gotten different answers – yes, no, maybe, and why are you asking?
Restaurant. I understand that the delays in the restaurant opening is not because the effort is not being put forward. It has more to do with much needed repairs and upgrades. Have patience. I am certain that it will be a facility that we will all be proud to support.
Misuse of Residential Access Cards. Residential Access Cards are used to gain entry to the Tennis Courts, Swimming Pool, and Work Out Center. In order to use a card, you have to be aged 16 or older. It is inappropriate for parents to give their access cards to juveniles to be used without the presence of a parent.
We have experiences of minor children using access cards with negative results, such as inappropriate behavior. Results have included cards being turned off. When this occurs, in order to get access turned back on, the parent has to show up at a board meeting and convince them that the problem is under control and will not happen again. Again, do not let young children use your access cards. Not allowed.
Course Condition. As this article was being written – the course conditions were very good. Greens are being treated for weeds, so you may note a few dead spots, but they will heal fully by end of year.

Pot Holes on Heritage Harbor Parkway have been reported to Hillsborough County Public Works Department. We are the schedule to have them repaired. If you have pot holes on your street please report them to 813-635-5400.

Golf Course News. Golf Clinics. The Heritage Harbor Golf Course will be providing free golf instructions for any resident who would like to tune up your game, smooth out a faulty swing, or just to learn a basic knowledge of the game. We will have one clinic for adults and a second clinic for Juniors. Mark your calendars. These clinics are free, the weather will be mild, and you will have fun.
Saturday, October 30 - Free Adult Golf Clinic. (930am – 10:00am) Saturday, October 30 - Free Kid’s Golf Clinic. (10:00am – 10:30am)
High School Golf Teams. The Steinbrenner High School Golf Team will be hosting three golf matches at our course during the month of October. You are invited to come out and follow the golfers. Some of these students are outstanding athletes and play golf at a very good level.
You can either walk with the golf pairings and get some great exercise (about 8,000 steps per nine holes at no cost) or you can rent a cart for $10.00 to follow them in comfort (dependent upon golf cart availability). All golf matches begin at 3:30.

October Golf Outings. The big golf event in October is the Steinbrenner Boys Baseball Team Scramble. The event will be on Saturday October 23rd at an 8am shotgun. This is one of our most successful events of the year. It will sell out early. If you love scrambles, this is one you do not want to miss. Plenty of prizes, food, beverages, contests. And all the proceeds go to support the high school baseball team.

Golf Course Hours. The sun will set about 7:15 each day in October. October will also be the last opportunity to get nine holes of golf in comfortably before the November time change (as long as you can get to the course before 5:00). Course hours will allow early morning golfers to get on the course at daylight and evening hour golfers can play the course until about 7:00. All carts have to be in before sunset so we can get them cleaned, the flags picked up, and the driving range postured for the next morning. The pro-shop will be open until 5:30 so you can get range balls and enjoy practicing your game until it is too dark to hit.
