Here’s a set of “Power Pix” Reading Cards inspired by Whole Brain Teaching. All of the original WBT cards are included, plus I

added a few extra for skills I wanted my students to know.

I printed the graphics side first by typing in the “even” page numbers for my printer settings. Next, I turned the pages

around to align the back instructions.

What is a possessive noun?

A possessive noun uses an apostrophe, ends in “s,” and shows ownership.

Gesture: With one finger, draw a “s’ in the air.

What is a capital letter? A capital letter is an uppercase

letter of the alphabet.

Gesture: Put on hand on top of the other. Lift top hand quickly to show that the

capital letter is the “big” letter

What is the difference between a capital letter and a lowercase letter?

When do we use capital letters? (1st word of a sentence; I – when the I is all by itself; capitalize dates and names)

What are lowercase letters? Lowercase letters are the small letters.

What is a sentence?

A sentence is a complete message. Every Sentence must start with a capital letter

and end with a punctuation mark.

Gesture hold your hand up to your ear as if listening on the phone; pound fist for the word “must,”

What is the first word of a sentence rule?

The first word of a sentence rule is: the first word of a sentence must be capitalized.

Gesture: show the sentence gesture and then raise

one hand over your head to show capitalization.

What is a space?

Spaces separate the words in a sentence.

We leave spaces in between the words.

Gesture: hold up both pointer fingers and jab up/down to represent pointing at spaces.

What is a word family?

A word family is a group of words that rhyme. Words in a word family have the same ending sound.

Gesture: give yourself a hug to show the meaning of family.

Is rug, hug, and bug in the same word family? Is cat, mat, and bat in the same word family? Is pop, pin, and pat in the same word family?

Consonants are letters that are not vowels.

A long vowel is a vowel that says it’s name.

What are syllables?

Syllables are parts of words.

Gesture: clap out each syllable as you say the word.

Essential Question: How do I determine the number of syllables in a printed word?

• Does this word have 1 syllable (table, dog, computer)? • Does this word have 2 syllables, etc.

What are rhyming words?

Rhyming words are two words that end the same.

Gesture: Hold up 3 fingers on each hand. Wiggle fingers on one hand for “fat,” then wiggle

the fingers on the other hand for “cat.”

The main idea is what everything in a book is about.

Explain that the main idea is in the center and the fingers are details that support the main idea.
