Here’s a set of “Power Pix” Reading Cards inspired by Whole Brain Teaching. All of the original WBT cards are included, plus I

added a few extra for skills I wanted my students to know.

I printed the graphics side first by typing in the “even” page numbers for my printer settings. Next, I turned the pages

around to align the back instructions.

What is a possessive noun?

A possessive noun uses an apostrophe, ends in “s,” and shows ownership.

Gesture: With one finger, draw a “s’ in the air.

Grab one hand with the other hand to show ownership.

CAPITAL Letters

What is a capital letter? A capital letter is an uppercase

letter of the alphabet.

Gesture: Put on hand on top of the other. Lift top hand quickly to show that the

capital letter is the “big” letter

What is the difference between a capital letter and a lowercase letter?

When do we use capital letters? (1st word of a sentence; I – when the I is all by itself; capitalize dates and names)

What are lowercase letters? Lowercase letters are the small letters.

Gesture: hold your index finger and thumb

Letters can be joined together to make words.

What is a word?

A word is a group of letters that make sense.

Gesture: hold up fingers of one hand for “letters,” then snap fingers to indicate they join together to form a word.

This is a phone.

What is a sentence?

A sentence is a complete message. Every Sentence must start with a capital letter

and end with a punctuation mark.

Gesture hold your hand up to your ear as if listening on the phone; pound fist for the word “must,”

What is the first word of a sentence rule?

The first word of a sentence rule is: the first word of a sentence must be capitalized.

Gesture: show the sentence gesture and then raise

one hand over your head to show capitalization.

End Marks

What is the letter I by itself?

When the letter I is by itself, it must be capitalized.

Gesture: draw a capital I in the air.

What are end marks?

End marks are periods, exclamation marks, and question marks. Every sentence must end

with an end mark.

Gesture: use the gestures for period, exclamation mark, and question mark.

What is a space?

Spaces separate the words in a sentence.

We leave spaces in between the words.

Gesture: hold up both pointer fingers and jab up/down to represent pointing at spaces.

What is a word family?

A word family is a group of words that rhyme. Words in a word family have the same ending sound.

Gesture: give yourself a hug to show the meaning of family.

Is rug, hug, and bug in the same word family? Is cat, mat, and bat in the same word family? Is pop, pin, and pat in the same word family?

What are consonants?

Consonants are letters that are not vowels.

Gesture: Make vowel gesture and then make a fist on the word “not.”

Play Yes/No Way: Is “r” a vowel? Is “o” a vowel?

Why or why not? How do you know?

(“y” is circled because it can be sneaky & can sound like vowel)

What are vowels?

The vowels are a-e-i-o-u. Every word and syllable needs to have a vowel.

Gesture: hold up 5 fingers; wiggle one finger for each vowel.

Is “k” a vowel? Is “e” a vowel?

Why or why not? How do you know?

Quick Check: Touch your nose when you see/hear a vowel.

What is a short vowel?

A short vowel is a vowel that does not say it’s name.

Gesture: wag you finger back and forth on “not”

A long vowel is a vowel that says it’s name.

Gesture: Put the tips of your pointer fingers together and stretch them apart for “long.”

What are syllables?

Syllables are parts of words.

Gesture: clap out each syllable as you say the word.

Essential Question: How do I determine the number of syllables in a printed word?

• Does this word have 1 syllable (table, dog, computer)? • Does this word have 2 syllables, etc.

Quick Check: when I say a word with one syllable, touch your nose

What are rhyming words?

Rhyming words are two words that end the same.

Gesture: Hold up 3 fingers on each hand. Wiggle fingers on one hand for “fat,” then wiggle

the fingers on the other hand for “cat.”

Play Yes/No Way: • Do these words rhyme (dog, log)? How do you know?

• Hat and mop are rhyming words (Y/N) • Do sing and thing rhyme?

What is a noun?

A noun is a person, place, thing, or animal

Gesture: point to yourself (person), around the room (place), Knock on table (thing), make an animal gesture (animal)

Play Yes/No Way: • Is dog a noun? • Is circus a noun? • Is running a noun? • Is apple a noun?

What is a verb?

A verb is an action word; a state of being

Gesture: pump arms as if you are running

Play Yes/No Way: • Is “eat” a verb? • Is “door” a verb? • Is “sleep” a verb?

What is a singular nouns?

A singular noun means only one person, one place, one thing, or one animal.

Gesture: hold up one finger each time you say “one”

Play Yes/No Way:

• Is “boy” a singular noun? • Is “cookies” a singular noun? • Is “bug” a singular noun?

A plural noun means more than one person, place, thing, or animal. A plural noun often ends in “s.”

Gesture: draw a “s’ in the air

What is a pronoun?

A pronoun is a word used in the place of a noun.

(showing it can be replaced).

What are quotation marks?

Quotation marks show someone is talking

Gesture: curl 2 fingers in each hand to indicate quotation marks.

An adjective is a word that describes a noun.

A apostrophe is a small mark used in contractions and possessive nouns.

What is a compound word?

A compound word is 1 word made up of 2 words.

Gesture: hold up 2 fingers with one hand. With the other hand, squeeze the 2 fingers

together to show they become 1 word.

Main Idea

What are characters?

Characters are people, animals, or even things in a story.

Gesture: have 2 fingers run up and down arm (representing characters moving around in a story)

Who are the characters in Curious George?

Who are the characters in Where the Wild Things Are?

Think of “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.” Is Pigeon a characters? (yes) Is the bus a character? (no)

Is the bus driver a character? (yes)

What is the main idea?

The main idea is what everything in a book is about.

Gesture: hold hand out with palm up, then curl fingers up as if holding a bubble.

Explain that the main idea is in the center and the fingers are details that support the main idea.

A setting is where a story takes place.

Gesture: sweep your arm our indicating that the classroom could be a setting for a story.

A plot is the problem and solution in a story.

A plot is the actions taken by characters in a story to solve a problem.

Nonfiction is a story, or book, that is real. It is not made up.

Is a book about flying monkeys nonfiction? (no)

What is fiction?

Fiction is a story that is not real, it is made up.

Gesture: hold up 3 fingers near your eyes. If I had 3 eyes, would that be real (nonfiction) or made up (fiction)?

Is a story about 2-headed dragon fiction? (yes) Is a book about President Obama fiction? (no)

Is a book about a magical snowflake fiction? (yes)

What is an illustrator?

An illustrator creates the pictures for a book, story, or poem.

Gesture: use both hands to make a picture frame

Does an illustrator draw pictures? (yes) Does an illustrator write the words? (no)

What is an author?

An author write the words of a book, story, or poem.

Gesture: pretend you are holding a pencil and writing.

Does an author write the words? (yes)

Does an author paint pictures? (no)

What is a contrast?

A contrast describes how two things are different.

Gesture: make fists with both hands and

move them toward each other.

Contrast the caterpillar and the butterfly. (the caterpillar crawls and butterfly can fly)

What is a comparison?

A comparison describes how two things are alike.

Gesture: fold hands and fingers together

Compare the apple and the strawberry. (they are both fruit, they are both red)

A prediction is a guess about the future.

Gesture: scratch your head to think and point Straight in front of you (towards the future)
