when it launched the PhD program in HealthPolicy and began recruiting prospective

students for its Fall 2020 cohort.

Sayeh Nikpay named among 34 "PowerPlayers" in health care

In November, Sayeh Nikpay, PhD, assistant professorof health policy, was named a "Power Player" in healthcare by Business Insider. The recognition came as herresearch into the 340B drug program generatesheadlines nationwide. Nikpay was included among 34other industry professionals, including CEOs, policymakers, other researchers and lobbyists.

APHA honors Dr. William Schaffner withdistinguished career award

William Schaffner, MD, professor of health policy,preventive medicine and infectious disease, wasrecognized by the American Public Health Associationwith a Distinguished Career Award for his years ofdedicated service to infectious disease surveillance,

Research Into Policy & Practice LectureSeries

The fall 2019 Research Into Policy & Practice LectureSeries explored one of the biggest health policy topicstoday: Medicare For All, with a large audience inperson and online through a live video stream of theevent, which captured viewers from across thecountry.

The semiannual lecture and discussion was hosted byMelinda Buntin, PhD, Mike Curb Professor of HealthPolicy and Chair of the Department. Moderated by DanGorenstein (above, second from left), executiveproducer of the new health policy podcast"Tradeo�s," the panelists included Chip Kahn,President and CEO of the Federation of AmericanHospitals (above, third from left), and Carol Paris, MD,a retired psychiatrist and past president of Physiciansfor a National Health Program (above, right).

Emerging Infections Program celebrates 20years

In September, the Tennessee Emerging InfectionsProgram celebrated its 20th anniversary with  a specialResearch Presentation Day that included currentresearch and posters, and a look back at two decadesof important infectious disease surveillance andresearch developments.

David Stevenson, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair ofEducation, found in a study published by HealthA�airs in July that nursing home sta�ng �uctuateswidely during the week, and is often below federalguidelines. The study was among the �rst touse new payroll-based journal data.

Andrew Wiese, PhD, MPH, honored withdiabetes research award

Andrew Wiese, PhD, was awarded the Daryl K.Granner Scholar in Diabetes award in November as themost outstanding PhD research fellow for the year. Dr.Wiese helped lead the �rst study to identify, validate,and characterize a population of patients with Type 2Diabetes in PCORnet, the National Patient-CenteredClinical Research Network, which helped demonstratethat PCORnet is a powerful ongoing resource for theinvestigation of the long-term e�ectiveness and safetyof anti-diabetic medications in patients with Type 2diabetes.

Zorah Taplin, Associate Program Manager

Zorah Taplin joined the Department in December as anassociate program manager, providing faculty support in our2525 West End o�ces. She earned her degree in health sciencewith a concentration in public health from Tennessee StateUniversity. Prior to graduation, Zorah interned with theDepartment by supporting the MPH program and with Middle-West TN Clean Fuels.

Dr. Velma Murry, Professor

Velma McBride Murry, PhD, holds the Lois Autrey Betts Chair,Education and Human Development, and was appointedUniversity Professor in the department in August, making herthe second woman and �rst person of color to hold two primaryappointments in two departments at Vanderbilt. Just 8 othershave the title of university professor atVanderbilt. Murry received her bachelor’s degree from theUniversity of Tennessee and her master’s and Ph.D. from theUniversity of Missouri-Columbia. She joined the Vanderbiltfaculty in 2008. 

John Ujwok, MPH, Health Policy Analyst II

John Ujwok, MPH, joined the EIP team at the Village atVanderbilt as a health policy analyst in August. He relocatedback to Nashville after a year working at the Shelby CountyHealth Department in West Tennessee. He holds an MPH fromthe University of Alabama Birmingham and two bachelor'sdegrees in cell and microbiology from Tennessee Tech andpolitical science and government from the University ofTennessee.

Audrey Cheng, Health Policy Analyst I

Audrey Cheng, began working as an analyst at 2525 West Endin June. She supports Jordan Everson, Laura Henkhaus andDavid Stevenson in their research. She earned a degree in�nance and public health from Santa Clara University inCupertino, California, and interned at Kaiser Permanente.

Jean Bruce, Application Developer

Jean Bruce, an Air Force veteran, earned his degree inManagement Information Systems at the University of SouthFlorida. He joined the Department in August as an applicationdeveloper and supports Carlos Grijalva in his research, and he iscurrently working on the MEPREP and Sentinel projects.
