Competition in the world of photography is hotter than ever before, 1000’s of photographers out there all battling to make an income and more often than not selling their services on price alone.

If you want to really succeed in photography, you need to create a niche premium brand that appeals to a smaller sector of the market. If you try to be the photographer for EVERYONE, you’ll appeal to NO ONE.

HERE ARE MY 7 STEPS TO BUILDING A DESIRABLE PREMIUM PHOTOGRAPHY BRAND.

1. Niche Your OfferingBecome a specialist, target your photography at a market or offer a niche service. When you offer a specialist service you stand out as the expert in your field - the “Go-To Photographer”.

2. Build Your Niche Around Your Ideal Clients NeedsDon’t try to sell photographs, sell a solution to your client’s needs. Hotels don’t just want photos; they want buzzing social media and fully booked rooms. Brides don’t just want images; they want all the fun and emotion of their day captured in a hassle-free way.

3. Design Your Brand to Attract Your ClientOnce you know your ideal client then design your branding around them; the colours, words and feel of your website must appeal to them directly. Does your website need that feminine touch or a corporate professional look, does your client want cool and trendy or classical and bespoke?

4. Speak Your Clients LanguageIf you want to connect with a potential client you need to speak their language, don’t talk like a photographer, talk like your client - what’s really important to them and how can you help them?

5. Create a Strapline that tells People Exactly What you do for ThemUse a simple one-sentence strap-line that tells people exactly what you do for them, for example mine is simply “I Help Photographers Build a Premium Brand and Make a Lot More Money”.

6. Develop Your USP (Unique Selling Point)Don’t be the same as everyone else; do things differently and stand out. This could be your packages, guarantee, express turnaround time, bespoke service, or your vast experience in the field.

7. Don’t Skimp On BrandingLook professional in everything you do, carry across the same message and branding in all of your marketing material, website and social media channels. Develop a brand that is totally you, invest in your brand and design the same you would a new piece of camera kit. If you look premium, then it’s easy to charge more, if you look cheap, your prices will always appear too expensive.
