message from the minister for multicultural affairs and Citizenship
I am delighted to welcome everyone attending the 21st Swiss and Italian Festa. This vibrant festival continues to be a highlight of Victoria’s multicultural events calendar and I congratulate the organisers for its longevity.
The Swiss and Italian Festa is a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the role that migrants from Ticino in Switzerland and Northern Italy have had in shaping Hepburn Shire as we know it today. The various events and activities are a wonderful tribute to the region’s history and enable all Victorians to celebrate and share the Shire’s story. The settlers imparted a legacy that extends beyond the region and can be seen in many aspects of life in Victoria, including the arts, sport, food, music and architecture.
The Victorian Government is proud of our State’s rich cultural heritage. Events like the Swiss and Italian Festa play an important role in encouraging people of all backgrounds to learn about and nurture this heritage, which forms a key part of our identity as Victorians.
On behalf of the Victorian Government, I congratulate the organisers of the Swiss and Italian Festa and wish everybody participating a most enjoyable time.
Hon. Nicholas Kotsiras MP Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Minister for Energy and Resources
01
message from the president
The Swiss and Italian Festa continues to increase in popularity and in the breadth of its programme of events. Last year we enjoyed our 20th Festa with record attendances and enthusiastic participation by visitors and locals. This year we bring another exciting and diverse programme. We continue to present those popular events that give so much pleasure to families – the Grand Parade and Family Concert and the Lantern Parade and Fireworks. Favourites such as the Dulux Landscape Art Prize, the Children’s drawing and landscape exhibitions, heritage walks, food and wine events, musical performances and open gardens are again included.
The Festa is a significant event in the Hepburn Shire. Its themes based on the proud heritage of the Swiss and Italian settlers in the mid-19th century provide a focus for current generations to celebrate and remember this rich history. It keeps the memory of these early settlers alive and gives school children, descendants of the pioneers and all Festa visitors many opportunities to learn about and enjoy our local culture and heritage.
The Festa would not be possible without the generous support of the Victorian Government, through the Department of Premier and Cabinet (Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship), and the Hepburn Shire. The Committee thanks these two organisations and all Sponsors and Festa Amici. This support and the work of our small hard working committee and volunteers have made the Festa one of the longest running events in regional Victoria.
We have great pleasure in presenting this 2013 Festa for your enjoyment.

peter kirk – festa image artist exhibition A history of working as a graphic designer led Peter Kirk to challenge how to avoid digital technology when creating artworks. With digital printing onto canvas being popular the question is how do we not forgo paint for digital ink. The labour intensive time of mixing paint colours and layering paint onto the canvas to create the painted image uses skill and intuition compared with pressing “PRINT” on a laser printer. His current work “Secret Confessions” creates images inspired by the 16:9 cinema graphics format and letterboxing in film. The viewer is drawn immediately
into an intimate moment within the painting scenes. Mattes or black bars (letterboxing) are incorporated at the top and base of the paintings. These preserve the cinema closeup composition. The painting style suggests pixelation with criss cross streaks of paint and the chosen colours have a leaning to RGB, referencing back to digital technology. when: Thursday 31st October – Wednesday 6th November 10am – 4pm cost: $5.00 entry to The Convent where: The Convent Gallery Cnr Hill & Daly Streets, Daylesford T: 0467 166 982 e: [email protected] W: www.conventgallery.com.au

heritage walk buninyong Located 11kms south of Ballarat, Buninyong is claimed to have been the first pre-gold inland
settlement in Victoria. It was first settled in 1839 and was attractive to settlers for its good

many historic buildings and gardens from that period in existence today.

italian film screenings at the rex In collaboration with the Italian Film Festival and The Rex Theatre we are delighted to
present the following Italian Films as part of the 2013 Swiss & Italian Festa;
shun Li & The poeT (To sono li) starring: Tao Zhao, Rade Serbedzija, Marco Paolini
Director: Andrea Segre
In Andrea Segre’s poignant debut feature, Shun Li is a softly-spoken young Chinese
immigrant who is moved by her Chinese broker from a clothing factory to a new job as a
barmaid in Chioggia, a small fishing community on the Venetian lagoon in Italy.
There she manages the bar and serves the fishermen regulars in halting Italian. Among
these is Bepi, nicknamed “The Poet,” who has just retired from a long fishing career. He and
the gentle Shun Li bond, sharing a love of poetry, both being from families of fishermen,
and both are foreigners (Bepi is Slavic). Bepi also learns that Shun Li is struggling to earn
enough money to pay back her brokers so she can bring her young son to Italy.
Soon the all too familiar forces of hate, prejudice and paranoia disrupt their innocent
friendship: vocal anti-immigrant cynics are convinced the Chinese are taking over, and
rumours that their relationship is more than a friendship are problematic for Li’s employers.
This unusual and compelling first feature was deservedly selected for the Venice Days
section of the Venice Film Festival, and the remarkable central performance by Zhao Tao as
Li is both restrained and heartfelt. This is a touching festival highlight.

italian film screenings at the rex In collaboration with the Italian Film Festival and The Rex Theatre we are delighted to
present the following Italian Films as part of the 2013 Swiss & Italian Festa;
DriFTers (gli sfiorati) starring: Andrea Bosca, Miriam Giovanelli, Claudio
Santamaria, Asia Argento.
Director: Matteo Rovere
Handsome, good-natured Mete is dealing with the
complications of his father’s impending remarriage and
the not entirely unwelcome attentions of his half-sister
Belinda, pulled out of her Madrid boarding school for
bad behaviour.
From a suave man about town in the company of best
friend and habitual philanderer Damiano, Mete finds his
world turned upside down as Belinda moves into his
central Rome apartment. Instead of simply keeping an eye on her as the older half-brother,
he now needs to introduce boundaries definitely not to be crossed.
Attempting to remain focused on his work and supporting recently divorced colleague
Bruno, the well-meaning Mete is constantly drawn to a carefree world of parties and good
times devoid of responsibilities.
A delightful, beautifully shot contemporary comedy drama, Drifters is lighthearted and
entertaining with a photogenic Eternal City and even more photogenic cast.

Take iT easy (scialla!) starring: Fabrizio Bentivaglio, Flippo Scicchitano,
Barbara Bobulova.
Director: Francesco Bruni
This debut feature from celebrated screenwriter
Francesco Bruni (The First Beautiful Thing) is a touching
comedy about two broken men who help each other
find their way.
After losing faith in the education system, retired
teacher and novelist Bruno (Fabrizio Bentivoglio)
has all but given up on life. Currently ghost writing
a biography for former adult star Tina (Barbora
Bobulova), he also tutors privately to make ends meet. One of his students is Luca (Filippo
Scicchitano), a drifting and despondent teenager who is on the brink of failure at school.
Luca’s mother takes a six month job in Mali, and asks Bruno to look after her son while she’s
away. Confused by the request, Bruno’s world is turned upside down when she reveals he is
Luca’s father. As the threat of expulsion from school looms over Luca, Bruno tries to help his
secret son get his act together.
A poignant story about a man learning to become a father, and a son choosing to become
a man.

Three years ago when Val and Roger Roberts moved to their new property ‘Landsdowne’
near Daylesford, it was a mostly run down bush block, with a few over grown garden beds.
With positive thinking, an artists’ imagination, as well as a lot of help from their neighbor
(who happened to have a Bobcat and a truck!), they set to work cleaning up. They had
no ‘grand plan’ as such, just the realisation that it had to be hardy and drought tolerant,
as well as easy to maintain. The plantings are a mixture of natives and Mediterranean
species, along with lots of grasses and iris, also a variety of succulents. They have also
saved many of the indigenous plants and shrubs. Quirky sculptures, some made from old
farm machinery, and many large rocks to form edges and natural sculpture have been
introduced, along with meandering gravel paths that lead you around the property.
Roger is an artist, and works from a large studio / gallery adjacent to the main house. His
studio will be open on the day. It has a beautiful view of the dam and surrounding bush and
adds an extra depth and feature to the garden.

DayLesForD houseDaylesford House was built in the 1870s by Charles Walton, a gold speculator who later
became the town draper. It is a rambling Victorian house with an acre of gardens planted
at about the same time as the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. The garden has been
redeveloped and extended over the past five years. It has magnificent established trees
and terraced gardens with sweeping views of Wombat Hill to the south. Formal garden
entertaining areas and verandahs with views of Daylesford to the west. A rose garden
and lavender hedges lie to the east. The garden features roses, camellias, rhododendrons,
maples and a variety of hedges and exotic plants.”

The house was built around 1890 by a Swiss-Italian migrant John Lavezzolo and was
acquired by Annie and Peter Duncan in 2010. In the intervening period it was among others
owned by a Mr G.W. Parker, who was at one time mayor of Daylesford and a founder of the
Hepburn Springs Golf Club.
The garden has been worked on since 2011 and is still quite new. The centrepiece is a
fountain made in Castlemaine and the surrounding plantings are mostly of European origin.
Other features of note are the vegetable gardens, the barn and the old oak and ash trees
which probably date from the late nineteenth century.

loVers Villains anD fools a festival within a festival, music for LoVers ViLLains and FooLs features:
Melbourne quintet The Tiger & Me, described by Inpress Magazine as “Cabaret/Circus/Euro Indie Folk-Pop Wunderkinds”, join forces with prodigious Adelaide gypsy-jazz sensations The Bearded Gypsy Band for a series of double headline shows called ‘Music for Lovers, Villains and Fools’.
Comprising a full set from each band the show delivers a nod and wink to the romantic nostalgia
of the early 20th century, from a late-night smokey bar in Paris to a New York speakeasy, while remaining firmly rooted in present day. The bands bring a big-top energy to the stage to put on an event for all those rampant feet out there, looking for the ultimate place to whirl and stomp.
Also featuring guitar prodigy Daniel Champagne and singer songwriter Max Savage, music for LOVERS, VILLAINS & FOOLS promises to be a great day out for all, as part of the 2013 Hepburn Springs Swiss Italian Festa. when: Sunday 3rd November 2:00pm - 7:30pm cost: Adults $20 Under 18 $15 (must be accompanied by a responsible adult). lantern paraDe anD fireworks finale! A highlight for many, the coloured lanterns and lampions signal the end of another Festa and a thank you to the local residents and community for their generous support. Young and old alike, locals and visitors join the twilight parade winding through the bush to the site of the spectacular fireworks display in the Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve. Lanterns were once a common sight in the area as described in “100 Years of Daylesford Gold Mining History” by Henry T. Maddicks.
“One of the pretty sights of the times (i.e. early 1900s) was to see a line of candle lanterns marching along to the midnight shift. Miners used only an open candle , stuck into the drive wall with a “Spider” when below ground. Walking through the bush on a dark night, lanterns were used.”
Find a picnic spot and enjoy a fire-show and fabulous music by The Cider House Band, along with hot chocolate and coffee plus delicious take away food from the Hepburn Pavilion cafe as we wait for the fireworks to ignite!
BYO lanterns.
A special thank you to the lovely gentlemen of the Hepburn Springs CFA for overseeing this event.
