Sleep Behaviors and Routines

Overview

• Children can be anxious about sleep – separation fears. Favorite toy, nightlight or other comforters can help.

• Try to make children sleep independently, comfort them, ensure they feel safe.

• Long haul travel, holidays can change the routine, time will gradually change that.

Less then 1 year old

• 4-6 months – introduce simple bed routine (can be: eat, bath,

sleep), not too long about 15 minutes.– Move away from rocking, feeding to sleep, – try to

teach self soothing. – Try to do the same thing in the same order every

night. – Screen time before sleep I NOT advised.

Less then 1 year old

• Over 6 months – If pattern changes and baby starts waking up at

night. – possibly use controlled crying if baby is healthy

and well.– Make sure baby Is well fed.– Put back to bed without to much attention, no eye

contact, repeat as needed.

Potty Training

Respect the schedule your employer introduces – don´t forget to reinforce positive behavior, keep things fun and without tears.

Overview

• Age - 18-24 months starts, depends on when each child is ready: – Can stay dry for 2 hours and show interest in toilet – Regular or predictable bowel movements– Know when they need to go “I´m peeing”. – Understand simple instructions– Can sit– Enjoy phrase

• Main thing is the child is comfortable and secured (encourage potty training video )

Pooh, wee report!

• Pooh report: – Keep pooh report, remember what the pooh is like

and when the child made a pooh. It´s very important for parents to know.

– If pooh is hard. Give plenty of high fiber foods (vegetables and fruits and lots of water).

– They are supposed to pooh every day. Let employer know if not.

Safety

• NEVER EVER LEAVE A CHILD UNATTENDED!– Your employer needs to rely

100% on you caring for her child.

– Safety is the most important factor.

– Outside– Taxi, bus, walking– Playground– Shopping– By the pool– Sunlight – Insect bites
