TRINITY’S

The Trinity Church Council meeting was called to order on March 31st by President Melodee Pedersen.

Pastor Brandon led the recharge with Psalm 27:3. He also shared “Hearing His Voice” by Chris Tiegreen. The 365-day devotional book teaches us how to listen for the voice of God who loves us. Learning to listen to God is a process, a journey. We know that God speaks to His people and we need to learn how to listen.

New Council Members were welcomed: Ken Andreasen, Denise Gilmore, Amy Haynes and Ben Johnson.

February Council meeting minutes and financial report were approved. Also approved the voting results for the Trinity Council Officers and the creation and confirmation of the crisis leadership team.

Kelly Schroeder, Council Treasurer, will apply for the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), on behalf of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Pastor Brandon reported that a lock drop box was going to be installed outside the southeast doors for depositing of the church’s mail, offerings and other correspondence. He also informed Council of the extra effort Jon Quincy has done to help with the church’s technological needs at this time.

Melodee reported an Online Church Views and Reach Report – From 3/2/20-3/29/20, there were 5,044 engagements on Facebook and 7,784 video views.

There will be no “In Person” services held for Easter due to social distancing restrictions issued by Governor Pete Ricketts. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday services will be held via YouTube and the radio station.

The plan is to have drive-thru communion during Holy Week, as portable pre-filled communion packets have been ordered to be used for Easter Communion.

The next Council meeting will be held April 21st, 2020 at 6 p.m. via Zoom.

President Melodee Pedersen adjourned the meeting.

MARCH 2020 COUNCIL NOTES Submitted by Tricia Kersting, Council Secretary

APRIL 2020 COUNCIL NOTES Submitted by Tricia Kersting, Council Secretary

The Trinity Church Council meeting was called to order on April 21st by President Melodee Pedersen.

Pastor Brandon led the recharge by introducing the Council to “The Unstuck Group”. This group has a process that helps churches define their critical, foundational and directional levels. They help a church build structure to optimize teams for action to move everyone in the same direction. Pastor Brandon also asked the council to think about our Mission Statement. It has not been revised since 2004.

March Council meeting minutes and financial report were approved.

Kelly Schroeder reported the church did receive a loan/grant from the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act). The loan/grant will be used according to the guidelines and the funds spent will be forgiven.

It was reported that we’ve received one asbestos removal bid for the bathroom remodel project. Per our purchasing policy, a second proposal is required. A second bid will be sought out. The Council also awarded Foreman Lumber the bathroom remodel project.

It was reported that a Business Manger job description is being drafted. A final draft will be ready for Council’s review at the May meeting.

Pastor Ollie outlined some ways Trinity’s Care Ministry can be revitalized going forward. This would include training for Care Ministry laypersons for the future as there has never been a formal training in the past.

Pastor Brandon reported on an opportunity for him to develop and teach a course on Discipleship & Evangelism on-line through Harvest Workers. Harvest Workers is a brand new, online and on-demand, missional ministry leadership training program, taught by experienced mission-minded minsters to mentor and teach next generation ministry leaders. Council supports his persuing this opportunity.

It was approved to upgrade our video software and equipment, as this is what we’ve been relying on recently to reach a large portion of our membership.

A discussion was held on showing appreciation towards Trinity’s Tech Crew (Larry Christensen, Jim Hackney, Jon Quincy, Jacob Wilke and Mike Zastera) during this unique time of online worship, etc.

The next Council meeting will be held May 19th, 2020 at 6 p.m. via Zoom.

President Melodee Pedersen adjourned the meeting.

The Women’s Empowerment Program provides a strong spiritual foundation that unites women through fellowship who have been abused, abandoned and neglected by society. They learn new skills, restore their dignity and build trust. Once the 6 month tailoring and literacy training program is completed, these trainees will be able to read and write at the 5th grade level which enables these women to find higher paying jobs. Upon graduation, they have job positions in the garment industry or set up their own business. They can earn a livable wage that supports their children and no longer are they living on the streets and begging for survival.

From the Pastor : Pastor Ollie Fullmer

On Eagle’s Wings Isaiah 40:29-31

“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Since Karen and I have moved here to Nebraska, we have been amazed at how many hawks we have seen. One would think that coming from Utah (“the wild west!”), we would have seen an abundance of wild life. In some ways, that is true but there seems to be plentiful birds of prey soaring the sky around central to eastern Nebraska. We consider it an even greater blessing to see the eagles flying in the sky or roosting in the tops of trees. The main species we have seen have been the bald eagle. Amazing creatures of strength and grace in flight. Their wing spans can be known to range from five to six and a half feet. No wonder they can carry sizable prey! I think we can take a spiritual lesson from their flight as Isaiah hints at in chapter 40.

It doesn’t take much effort to fly once they’re up. They ride the wind. They catch the currents. They seek thermals; those warm air currents full of energy that rise from the earth. As David Hansen notes in his book The Art of Pastoring: Ministry Without All The Answers “watching an eagle reminds us of the best part of our life when we are trusting God, leaning in, riding on the Holy Spirit of God’s currents. Our soul wings are made large by God in order to catch the currents.” Eagles watch for the storm and then ride above it, scarcely ever needing to flap a wing.

Whatever our work or task is, it is not really our job to do all the work, let alone do it by ourselves. We catch the winds that lift us to the heights we cannot ourselves climb to. God gives the vision, the power, the lift, and the direction. Levi Lusko who himself is a pastor, a father, and has suffered the terrible, sudden loss of a daughter a few years back, said “when the weight becomes unbearable, we can always cue the eagle.”

We have been living in an extraordinary time of anxiety and uncertainty with this advent of an unseen, crippling virus. Its ripple effects have cut a path of unpredictability, and even sometimes fear, into the rhythm of our lives, our health, and our economic livelihoods. Still, we “cue the eagle.” Psalm 56:3-4 states “when I am afraid, I will trust in You; in God, whose word I praise, in God I trust, I shall not be afraid.”

Jesus himself said “Let not your heart be troubled, trust in God, trust also in me”, John 14:1. Many bibles use the words “believe” here in John 14 but the essence of what Jesus is getting at is the idea of leaning, of putting your weight and dependency upon; whole-hearted reliance and not simple mental belief the way we have come to think of that word.

This and other scriptures convey the Presence in whom we place our weight; the real meaning of trusting. When the weight seems too heavy, we cast all our cares on him for he cares for us, bearing us up with his own warm air currents of energy that lift us in the storm.

May we take heart from the words of this ancient Irish hymn that give us the all-pervasive vision of the Presence: Be thou my vision O Lord of my heart, naught be all else to me save that thou art - - Great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Be thou my vision O Ruler of all.
