People of Joburg

On the coverRocco de Villiers met us for our cover shoot at the recently revamped Roodepoort Theatre. See pages 14 to 15 to read more about the Theatre’s line up for the rest of 2014.

Photographer:Dan Rosenthal is based in Johannesburg. He specialises in portrait, food and fine art photography. Incoherently, he still shoots film and has way too many cameras. He believes pasta is a food group and shaves off his beard as soon as it is big and beautiful. You can see his work at www.danrosenthal.net and follow him on Twitter @DanBRosenthal and Instagram @danbrettrosenthal.

At Father Coffee, whilst sipping a flat white, we talk about how friendly we find the people of Joburg. We decide to take to the streets…Sitting on a bench outside Post is Thlono Mokoena.

Look at you basking in the sun. What’s your name and age? And are you studying or working?Thlono Mokoena, 25, studied civil engineering but don’t practise it.

Oh and what is it that you practise?I work for a popular energy drink.

That looks yummy, what is it? It’s a Prego roll and Lemonade. Delicious.

What do you dig about Joburg? The people. The diversity. The uniqueness of the South African culture presented here. Like even musically - I think it’s exciting that because of our 11 languages, we have 11 different and unique interpretations and renditions of say, one song.

Speaking of uniqueness, where did you snatch that cute-cardi from?I jacked it from my cousin, who is a girl.

ed’s letter

hello joburgers! The energy and momentum from our September

relaunch issue continues… Summer festivities are in full swing and October is filled with

exciting events.

Roodepoort Theatre underwent a complete revamp in February. We bring you their exciting year end line-up, including Stefan Louw’s Aria! For Everyone and

Nataniel’s special Christmas production. We were lucky enough to meet and chat to the talented and charismatic

Rocco de Villiers at the theatre for our cover shoot. He was engaging and treated us to an impromptu piano recital. He’s

given concerts at the theatre on many occasions and will be delighting audiences again in the near future.

Staying at the theatre, Joburg Theatre brings us Brazouka – a high energy journey of intense passion, pulsing music and explosive energy, with Brazil’s most thrilling new dance company. Enjoy a meal at Stages restaurant before the show and make a night of what is sure to be an “award-winning sensation of a show”.

Another highlight this month is the Oktober Bierfest at Montecasino. It’s South Africa’s biggest annual national festival of fun, food, fräuleins and of course, beer. Don’t miss out on the festivities taking place on two weekends in October.

Finally, from the team at Hello Joburg, thank you to everyone for their support and encouragement. The event we held at Hard Rock Café on 17 September to celebrate the relaunch of our magazine, as well as the launch of our app, GoHello, and website was an overwhelming success and emphasizes just how far the magazine has come since it’s launch 34 years ago.

Here’s to the next 34!
