characters, miming, maskandi music, chants and is accompanied by a band.

5 OCTOBER: FROM WHERE I STANDJoin Durban local Richelieu Beaunoir in his first one man show as he embarks you on his life`s journey growing up in his hometown, Newlands East. The story of himself as told by himself. With his sharp wit and quick tongue, Mr B endearingly shares his quirky observations and situational awk-ardness through family stories and crazy personal experiences. A proud Durbanite, his unique style of comedy leaves no stone unturned as he questions and dissects all that he encounters. Unapologeti-cally straightforward, this show promises to leave audiences with a keen eye for observations.

8-20 OCTOBER: AMAMBAZOA musical created by Professor J. Shabalala directed by Edmund Mhlongo paying tribute to in-ternationally acclaimed South African Ischatamiya group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Though the carefully selected music of the group, AMAMBA-ZO tells the story of a young man longing for the love of a beautiful young maiden, Nomathemba. After a series of struggles, challenges, competi-tions, sufferings – the young man finally received his victory – imbazo – the axe (music charm) helps him to achieve historic victory. AMAMBAZO can be interpreted as the subtext of South Africa’s jour-ney from suffering to historic democracy in 1994 – a story of peace, unity and reconciliation.

11 OCTOBER: TATS NKONZO 2ND BASEOn his debut Durban appearance, comedian Tats Nkonzo is not holding back. With a massive arsenal of observational humour, cutting intellect and a gui-tar, Tats Nkonzo brings a flavor to stand-up comedy that is unrivalled. Winner of the Breakthrough Act of the Year at the 2012 South African Comics Awards, he has managed to harness and integrate comedy and music to exhilarating effect.

constant threat of arrest during a police raid. The Durban System, as it was known, became the blueprint for apartheid in later years. The Kwa-Muhle Museum has many displays documenting the Durban System including a very illuminating one on just how the municipality managed to get the system to pay for itself through a municipal monopoly of brewing and selling sorghum beer. Another display concerns the Cato Manor riots which were largely the result of that monopoly.Open: Monday to Saturdays; 8:30-16:00, Sundays and Public Holidays; 11:30-16:00

DURBAN BOTANIC GARDEN9A John Zikhale Road, BereaTel: 031 309 9240 www.durbanbotanicgardens.org.za

Founded in 1849, Africa’s oldest surviving botani-cal gardens houses one of the world’s top collec-tions of “living fossil” plants. These pre-dinosaur cycads (seed-producing plants extending back 250 million years) face possible extinction in the wild. The Wood’s Cycad species is named for founding Durban Botanic Gardens curator and botanist John Medley Wood, who, in 1895, discovered a single, surviving cycad plant in a Zululand forest. Walking through the Gardens’s cycad forest is a bit like stepping onto the set of Jurassic Park. No dinosaurs here, but the pink-backed pelicans sitting in the trees do look eerily like pterodactyls.

UNDERWATER WONDERLAND

Brave the depths of the Indian Ocean, and discover an ancient world hidden just beneath the water’s surface...Aliwal Shoal, just off the coast of Umkomaas, has a spectacular marine ecosystem awaiting intrepid scuba divers. The magnificent reef is alive with colourful corals, reef fish, turtles, whales, rays and moray eels. It is rated among the top five warm water div-

ing spots in the world. The reef is particularly renowned for its ragged-tooth sharks, which cruise the reef’s intricate gullies and caves. The reef is also inhabited by zambezi and tiger sharks! The warm, clear water has excellent vis-ibility and rarely drops below 19 degrees Celsius. Some of Aliwal’s dive sites include: Raggie’s Cave – which is famed for its ragged tooth sharks, moray eels and potato bass.

Divers are only allowed to enter the caves when the sharks are not in residence. Outside Edge – where the greatest variety of ma-rine life on the shoal can be found, including game fish, sharks, dolphins and scorpion fish. Wreck Dives – at the MV Produce and The Nebo provide fascinating alternative sites, with excellent photo opportunities and interesting sea life, including lion fish, the rare harlequin goldie, moray eels and brindle bass. There are many dive centres in the area that offer accredited scuba diving courses, dive equipment for hire and chartered dives to Aliwal Shoal and other locations along the coast. Divers require valid PADI, NAUI or CMAS Open Water Qualifications.

A walk around mini town will give you an opportunity to view excellent models of some of Durban’s most interesting buildings. One of the most popular features of the layout is a rail network with trains continually on the go.

stop every now and then while the bridge is lifted to let a ship through.

UMGENI RIVER BIRD PARK

Designed and built by Dr. Alan Abrey in an old quarry site, the Umgeni River Bird Park was opened in April 1984. The park was owned private-ly by a group of bird lovers who wanted to educate others about birds from around the world. It was run by Alan Abrey until his retirement in 1997, and in those years the artwork for the park (guidebook illustrations, park maps, and so forth) were done by his daughter Robyn Abrey.

Set in a land filled and landscaped former quarry, the park includes several natural waterfalls. Paths for visitors wind through three aviaries and past other aviaries and open exhibits. A viewing window in the nursery lets visitors see how the birds are hatched and raised.

Construction of the Free Flight Bird Show arena was started in 1995, with the venue staging its first show in 1996.

The Free Flight Bird Show, opened in 1996, fea-tures birds from North and South America, Africa,

Indonesia, and Australia, and emphasizes conserva-tion. Birds in the show includes a owls, cranes, hornbills, macaws, kookaburras, toucans, vultures, in an open air auditorium. The show is staged twice daily, weather permitting.

The park breeds 17 of the 24 threatened bird spe-cies in its collection. The park is involves with the South Africa Crane Working Group in breeding and then releasing the Wattled Crane. The birds are hand-reared using a glove puppet, and are then released near Dullstroom. Wattled cranes are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, and there are only about 8000 in the wild.

MITCHELL PARK ZOO

Every day of the year could feel like a holiday, especially if you make your way to Mitchell Park. Named after Sir Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell, the park was established in the early half of the previews century as an ostrich farm. That venture did not go as well as planned, so it was transformed into a zoo instead.

Back then, a large variety of animals, including lions, leopards, crocodiles and many varieties of

bird, occupied a large part of the zoo. The remain-der consisted of beautifully landscaped gardens. One of the most memorable animals at the zoo at the time was Nellie, an Indian elephant.

Today Mitchell Park has a whole host of small animals and birds for you to visit, including crocodiles, buck, raccoons, cranes, flamingoes, wallabies, monkeys and tortoises. There is a walk-through aviary that allows you to get close-up views of many beautiful bird varieties.

A sand-filled playground allows small children to enjoy playing on jungle gyms, swings, slides and other equipment. Paraplegic facilities make sure that even physically challenged visitors have a great time. While you play, mom can relax and enjoy tea or a meal at the Blue Zoo tea garden, nestled among trees and attractive flowerbeds.

Carefully tended lawns are perfect for family pic-

nics, and even skottle braais are allowed. Mitchell Park’s staff members take an interest in educating children on the animal and plant worlds. They teach visitors how to preserve our natural wonders so that future generations may also enjoy them.

ON THE WATER

A cruise to the harbour of Durban, the largest har-bour in Africa, combined with a deep sea cruise is a great way to get a unique perspective to your visit in Durban. With knowledgeable and experienced guides you are sure to learn something new and discover facts and secretes only mariners can share.
