Hello 8C1! Hello 8C1! I hope that you all had a fabulous weekend and are ready for this week’s work. As you will recall, we are in the middle of a unit of work called ‘short stories’. Last week we read a short story called ‘The Dinner Party’. I hoped you enjoyed it and understood the twist at the very end! You ended up writing your own story starts! Don’t forget to send me them using [email protected] I would love to read them and will also give you feedback! This week you will be writing your own short story in full! I hope that you all had a fabulous weekend and are ready for this week’s work. As you will recall, we are in the middle of a unit of work called ‘short stories’.

Last week we read a short story called ‘The Dinner Party’. I hoped you enjoyed it and understood the twist at the very end! You ended up writing your own story starts! Don’t forget to send me them using [email protected] I would love to read them and will also give you feedback!

This week you will be writing your own short story in full! I can’t wait to get started! You will use your learning from the last few weeks. I know that many of you have been keen to write stories, so, here we go!

Great writers, which you all are, use inference in their work. They show the reader something not tell them directly. Please read the information below.

Almost midnight. 21st April. One hundred years ago. Through the salty, clear and calm waters, a small ship sailed towards land. The crew were content; it had been a long night and all were looking forward to the warmth of familiar surroundings. Their baskets of fish were their reminders of their success.

Suddenly, out of the night, a sly fog rolled in. Silently, it crawled like a blind man feeling his way.

For a moment, they could see nothing; not even a foot ahead of them. Their hearts raced. Their breathing quickened as they tried desperately to think of a solution.

Then, they saw a light.

It was a fire burning on the shore, strong enough to penetrate the swirling mist. They steered a course towards the light. It was a campfire on the beach. Only those by the fire’s side knew the dark objects were there, submerged, shrouded in darkness with evil glints in their eyes. Waiting.

An almighty crash echoed around the bay. The hull sheared in two. The mast snapped like a twig. The sailors’ screams were taken away by the cold night time air. The wreckage sank like a leaf falling from a tree. Silently. All the men aboard sank with it.

Above, as suddenly and silently as it had arrived, the fog lifted and receded back to the ocean.

Please answer the questions below. They are based on my story from the previous slide. Reflect the question in your answer and use accurate spelling and punctuation throughout.

1. What is the setting for the story? What time is it? Who are the characters?

2. What is the first problem for the men? Please explain.

3. How were the men feeling when the weather changed? How did you know? Copy down a quotation that shows how the men were feeling. This should be an example of show not tell.

4. What happened to solve the problem for the sailors? What did they see?

5. Explain the twist in the story. The sailors thought they were safe but what happened?

6. How did the story end? What was the resolution?

7. Copy down an example of a simple and a complex sentence from the story.

8. Find and write down at least one example of a simile that I used in the story.

9. Find and copy down a group of three that I used.

10. Find and copy down an example of onomatopoeia that I used.

11. Find and copy down an example of a one word sentence that I used.
