From light to dark – finding inspirationChoose daring black and white contrasts, and audacious deep reds, or opt for traditional shades and finishes. Our floors are divided into four sections, ranging from light to dark tones, to help you find a design that truly reflects your style. To help you choose, take inspiration from some of the leading names in design and architecture.

Virtual inspirationWith our Virtual Showroom, experimenting with design ideas has never been easier. This handy interactive web tool allows you to see Kährs wood floors alongside walls and furniture in a variety of styles and shades. What about a deep toned wood floor with emerald walls and black furniture? Or perhaps white on white? To help you decide, each image can be saved or printed as a handy reminder, or why not email it to family or friends for a second opinion?

Complete systemThe smallest things often make the biggest difference. That’s why we offer a complete flooring system where every detail, down to the skirtings, mouldings and other floor accessories, are colour matched to enhance the beauty of your floor. We also provide a wide range of installation and maintenance products.

A question of style

What makes a house a home? How can we create a warm, welcoming space to share with family and friends? A haven of calm that beckons us inside and invites us to kick off our shoes and relax the moment we enter?

To create such a space takes love and personality, as well as personal decorative touches. And, starting from the ground up, nothing adds as much warmth and character as a wood floor. Whether you prefer the classic charm of traditional rustic style, or the contemporary drama of a minimalist setting, Kährs has a floor to suit every taste.

But where to start? Interiors magazines can provide a wealth of ideas and inspiration, which is why we put together this magazine. We hope that the following pages will help you, as you embark on creating your dream home.

Trends may come and go, but quality and style endures. That’s why a Kährs wood floor is an investment; one that can be enjoyed by you and your family for generations to come.

Beauty with a conscienceKährs roots are firmly planted in the heart of the forests of Nybro, in Southern Sweden, where the company was founded in 1857 – and where our head office and main production plant is still based today. Our Swedish heritage forms the foundation of Kährs’ values, from our exacting quality and design standards, to our respect and commitment to the environment. We call it Beauty with a Conscience.

Our ecological commitment is long-standing. It earned us ISO 14001 environmental management certification more than a decade ago. But we didn’t stop there. environmental concern defines all our new developments. If you believe in a sustainable society, you must prove it.

Combining style with eco-principles hasn’t always been easy – until now. We applaud the movement that has made green glamorous. regardless of species and design, Kährs floors fulfil all of the demands of a modern wood floor aesthetically and environmentally, as well as in terms of quality.

“At Kährs we have worked with wood since 1857”.

TImeleSS AppeAlKährs floors are a brilliant example of modern ideas, reflecting age-old wisdom. With more than 150 years in the business, we are one of the leading, as well as one of the oldest, producers of wood floors in europe. With a long history of introducing ground-breaking wood flooring technology, we are also one of the most innovative.

CerTIFIeD SupplIerSOur suppliers are chosen from companies holding FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or peFC (programme for endorsement of Forest Certification) certificates or equivalent documentation. We also require all of our suppliers to sign our code of conduct.

reVOluTIONAry FlOOr TeCHNOlOGyIn 1941, Kährs was granted a patent for a multi-layer wood flooring construction – the world’s first engineered wood floor. This method of construction resulted in a floor that was more stable and allowed the raw material to be used in a more eco-friendly way. Compared to a solid wood floor, Kährs’ multi-layer construction is 75% more stable.

CleAN, INNOVATIVe prODuCTIONOver the years, Kährs has introduced a number of innovations aimed at lowering emissions. These include the use of water-based finishes and the installation of the most advanced air filter system in Scandinavia, at our plant in Nybro. Clean production is not only beneficial to the environment – it also creates a healthy work place for our staff too.

WASTe NOT, WANT NOTAt our production plant in Nybro, nothing goes to waste. Off cuts that we’re not able to use in our flooring become bio-fuel, some of which is used to heat our own facilities. The rest is passed on to a local energy company, to provide warmth for around 45,000 people in our neighbourhood.

mAKING THe BeST BeTTerIn 1999, Kährs was the first wood floor manufacturer to introduce a mechanical glueless joint system – the ingenious Woodloc® joint. This revolutionised the wood flooring industry. With the Woodloc®5S joint, we’ve taken the technology a step further. The new super joint provides an even stronger floor and a faster installation too.

SuSTAINABle FOreSTryWe work with local, national and global organisations to ensure sustainable forestry. These include leading global programmes and environmental groups, such as the FSC, eu, uN, WWF, Greenpeace and eIA, which support responsible forestry across the globe.

FIrST leeD-CerTIFIeD WAreHOuSe IN SCANDINAVIAIn 2010, Kährs constructed the first leeD (leadership in energy and environmental Design) certified warehouse in Scandinavia. The 21,000 m² building, at our site in Nybro, was awarded with leeD Gold certification. The new facility eliminates 1,800 truck trips to our old warehouse, reducing CO² emissions by over 450 tons, in addition to providing a host of other eco benefits.

Style secrets – how to get the best results1, 2 or 3-strip flooringlong planks in 1-strip designs, shorter planks in 3-strips. Kährs offers a huge selection of design options, allowing you to create your own unique style.

Combining nature and designFrom natural graining and colour variations, to gnarls and knots, the character of the wood is just as important for the overall look as the size of the strips. Our long experience in sorting by appearance enables us to craft floors in a multitude of styles.

1-sTRIp DeSIGNThe long planks of a 1-strip floor are ideal for larger spaces, such as this lengthy hallway. The surface of a 1-strip board is sawn in one piece. This emphasises the natural beauty and accentuates every detail, from variations in colour and grain, to individual knots.

2-sTRIp DeSIGNOur 2-strip floors are ideal for creating an individual look. The wear layer of this design is two strips’ wide. The strips are individually selected and arranged to give the floor its own unique character, which complements all styles, such as this living room.

DeSIGNS FOr lIVINGCombining traditional looks with modern styling, Kährs’ collection of patterned wood floors offer a choice of intricate designs, adding style and elegance to any interior. The surface layer features a repeat pattern. By combining different types of wood species and surface treatments, you can create unique, stunning looks throughout the home.

SHIp’S DeCKFor a traditional nautical feel, a Ship’s Deck floor is the ideal choice. Inspired by classic maritime design, each plank features a decorative strip edge and wood plugs at each end. Finished by hand, with the utmost attention to detail, they combine quality and authenticity.

3-sTRIp DeSIGNFrom lively, upbeat interiors to tranquil spaces, our 3-strip floors can complement any style and mood. The wear layer of these floors is three strips’ wide. They offer endless decorating opportunities and look particularly stunning in smaller spaces, like this hallway. Creating a linear effect, a 3-strip floor gives the illusion of a larger, more open space.

TOWN SeleCTION – THe quIeTly, lIVely FlOOrIf you’re looking for a floor that has character, but which allows a room’s decoration to remain the main focal point, take a look at our Town Selection. Dark or light, these floors are characterised by subtle variations in colour, tone and pattern, but without knots.

COUNTRY SeleCTION – pASTOrAl BeAuTyFor a bold and unmistakably natural look, choose our Country Selection. Here you’ll find floors with a truly rustic feel. Featuring dramatic graining, gnarls and knots, these floors have greater colour variations and a more lively character.

CITY SeleCTION – CleAN AND SleeKFor an understated, minimalist look, explore the City Selection. These floors typify cool elegance. Created from a uniform and regular timber grade, with small variations in grain and tone, they can be light or dark, depending on the wood species – but the tone and overall effect is uniform.

sILk mATT LACqUER – A SIlKy SmOOTH SurFACeOur silk matt lacquer complements the character of the wood by accentuating its natural structure. It also makes the floor more durable and easier to clean. In addition, our lacquer is one of the thinnest available, so it doesn’t conceal the wood’s natural lustre.

mATT LACqUER – A SuBTle lOOKOur matt lacquer gives the impression of untreated bare boards. The velvety surface is incredibly tactile and pleasing underfoot, yet matt lacquer is as hardwearing and easy to maintain as silk matt lacquer.

NATURE OIL – TACTIle TO THe TOuCHOur Nature oil reinforces the natural look. It brings out the texture and grain of the wood, and enhances the tone. Floors treated with Nature oil are easy to maintain, but they need a little more care than our lacquered floors and should be treated regularly with Kährs Satin Oil.

sTAINEDStains are used to further enhance the natural colour tones of the wood – from palest white and whisper greys to shades of rich mocha and charcoal.

BRUsHEDBrushing the surface highlights the natural structure of the grain and accentuates the texture. Brushing is usually accompanied by other surface treatments, such as a bevelled finish and a colour stain or glaze.

HANDsCRApEDFloors are given a worn, lived-in look through the use of special tools. A great amount of time is dedicated to crafting these hand-finished floors. The effect is authentic, natural and distinctly rustic.

BEvELLED EDgEsBevelled edges add a touch of drama to a floor. Bevelled styles vary from a micro-bevel – a slight accentuation of the edge using sandpaper – to a more dramatic, stronger bevel. In each style, both long and short edges are bevelled.

The surface – what your eyes see and your feet feelTrust your senses. All of our wood floors are smooth and warm underfoot, but a floor’s individual appearance and feel will ultimately depend on the finish and surface treatment that you choose. your preference regarding look, feel and function will help you make the right choice.

“By using shots of colour and soft textures against a pure-white background, you can create a home that’s both warm and serene,” explains Kährs’ designer, Stina Andersson. “Some people are afraid to use white flooring, as they’re worried that it may make a room appear cold, but it all comes down to what you team it with,” Stina adds.

White – the perfect partnerWhen it comes to trends, Kährs’ designer, Stina Andersson is always one step ahead. Tracking the trend for contemporary, minimal interiors, Stina has noticed the growing interest in very pale colour tones and in white, in particular. “There has been an increased demand for white floors over the last couple of years, as more and more people discover how versatile they are. We’ve

recently introduced a number of white floors, in different hues, sizes and with a variety of surface treatments, so now you’ve got an even better chance of achieving the exact style that you’re aiming for,” she says.

White space – pure brilliance“By using white-on-white for the floors, walls and ceiling, and combining it with smooth surfaces and neutral textiles, you can achieve a pure look that’s almost celestial. A white backdrop is also perfect for showing striking pieces, like eclectic finds, treasured heirlooms or designer furniture. regardless of the type of white floor that you choose, or what you team it with, the result will be a feeling of light and space, and a sense of simplicity and fluidity within the home.”

White and light floors require a little more maintenance than darker floors – but, with a little extra care, they will retain their stunning looks for many, many years.

“With the abundance of natural light that floods into this spacious family loft home, a white floor gives the appearance of extended space; a sense of infinity. It also has a serene, calming effect. By adding a few touches of strong, bold colours, like turquoise, yellow and red, to an otherwise monochrome palette, the homeowners have managed to create both depth and interest.”

“Take a good look at your home. Whether you live in a converted barn in the country, or a chic city pad, it pays to choose a floor that best reflects the period of your home and not least, the architecture of the building,” says Architect, Staffan Tollgard.

most important interior elementStaffan Tollgard is founder of the award-winning Staffan Tollgard Design Group. Based in london’s Notting Hill and the Algarve in portugal, the studio boasts an international client list, with projects ranging from high-end private homes to commercial properties. As a specialist in bespoke interior design, Staffan Tollgard often specifies Kährs’ oak floors for a wide range of interior design projects.

“The floor is the single most important element of any interior. It’s where your eyes naturally fall

and where your feet tread when you enter. That is why it is so important to choose carefully,” explains Staffan.

Achieving the right look“The first question you should ask yourself is what kind of look you want to achieve. Next, you should look at colours and the character of the wood. The colour affects the way that the light is diffused and the sense of space within each room. For example: a dark floor absorbs the light and makes a room feel smaller and cosier; a floor with lots of knots evokes a country vibe and a more homogenous floor creates a modern look.”

“Oak floors are wonderfully versatile and fit perfectly in many different types of interiors as they can look so different, depending on the finish, the size and shape of the board and of course, the character of the wood,” he adds.

“Combine a brown or russet coloured floor with soft light and tactile fabrics for a cosy take on minimalism”, says Designer and Interior Architect, Claudia de Bruyn.

“The floor covers the area of the room, so it’s extremely important for the overall look. Wood floors in opulent tones of brown and russet make a space feel more grounded. rich shades also create a cosy, intimate feel.”

If the floor is right, you can’t go wrong“The floor is one of the most important interior elements for me. If the floor is right for the space, you can’t go wrong with the rest. Think of

your floor as a blank canvas with the potential to create a real impact.”

go modern, with sunny hues“For a contemporary, cosmopolitan look, combine your russet floor with strong colours, such as sunny yellow or bright red. Or, if you’re looking for a more traditional look, try dark walls and muted tones, combined with classic furniture and original accessories. This also works well in ethnic-style inspired homes, with strong statement pieces.”

“This apartment embodies sumptuous, contemporary Italian style. Russet coloured wood is used as an important design element throughout the interior, evoking an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. It also softens the look of the otherwise spartan space. Few objects and a focus on high quality wood flooring achieved the look.”

“The warm, russet shades of Provence have clearly inspired the owners of this house, which speaks of the traditions of the region and its warm, sunny climate. It is also a showcase for the family’s appetite for the finer things in life, which they like to enjoy with family and friends. They have created this ambience through the use of warm colours and tactile wood.”

exAmpleS OF Grey AND BlACK FlOOrS

“A black or grey floor makes a strong statement in an interior. No matter what your style is – be it traditional or modern – the result will be elegant,” says Swedish Architect and Furniture Designer, peke Hallenheim.

“A dark floor helps to draw the outside in. It will highlight the rest of the interior, making furniture, art and collectibles the main focus. It will also help you to create contrasts in your home, as it’s easier for the eye to focus on contrasting elements. It will make for a more interesting space,” he explains.

small spaces, big ideasAs a Designer, peke Hallenheim is well-versed in the art of playing with colours by using a variety of different elements. “Although a dark floor

generally absorbs light, it can be used both in large and small spaces. Teamed with brilliant white walls and light, natural accessories, you can achieve a contemporary look. Or, if you add colour to the walls and furnish the room with traditional furniture, it will give it an air of sober elegance.”

Bring out the grain“Trends come and go, but dark floors have always been popular in warmer climates, like the mediterranean. But more recently, they’ve become increasingly sought after further north too,” says peke Hallenheim. “One advantage of a black or grey floor is that it actually accentuates the natural grain of the wood, to stunning effect,” he adds.

The perfect finishThe smallest things often make the biggest difference. This is true of a Kährs floor, where the highest level of skill is used to craft every detail, including the skirtings, mouldings and other floor accessories.

THe FINISHING TOuCHA skirting board creates the perfect finishing touch; not only to the floor, but also to the whole room. We offer a variety of skirting boards that are colour-matched to all Kährs floors.

WHeN CArpeT meeTS WOODFor a transition between a wood floor and a carpet there are two options: you can either use edge mouldings or level mouldings, depending on the height of the carpet. But whatever the solution, you can be certain that the result will look good.

A NeAT, NArrOW FINISHA narrow quadrant is ideal if you can’t remove existing skirting boards. quadrants offer quick, easy finishing against pre-existing base boards.

True mArrIAGe BeTWeeN STONe AND WOODNatural materials like stone and wood work really well together. If you want to create a perfect marriage between stone and wood in your home you can choose between two different solutions: either use an edge moulding or a level moulding.

STep-By-STep FOr AN eleGANT lOOKNothing beats a wood staircase for an elegant look. use stair noses to create a perfect end to every step in the staircase. There are two types of Kährs stair noses, depending on the floor you are using: Woodloc® and Tongue & Groove.

BIG IDeAS FOr TINy SpACeSSometimes even a quadrant is too big to use to cover the gap between the floor and the wall or window. If this is the case, the best solution is to use an edge moulding, for a neat, clean finish.

Kährs performance and accessories Wood facts

KÄHrS – SANDS lIKe A SOlIDKährs Original multi-layer construction uses hardwood down to the joint only, with fast-growing timber below. It can be refurbished in exactly the same way as a solid floor, as sanding of any wood floor is only possible down to the joint. Kährs construction has additional eco benefits too – and it’s 75% more stable!

THe STrONGeSTSurFACe THAT WON’TDISCOlOurThe surface of the floor is, visually, the most important part. As a result, all Kährs surface treatments are strong enough to withstand even the toughest daily wear and tear, yet thin enough so as not to disguise the wood’s lustre. And, unlike some finishes, Kährs surface treatments won’t ‘yellow’ over time.

KÄHrS GuArANTeeKährs has been manufacturing quality multi-layered wood floors for more than 60 years. We’re proud of our products and of their environmental and performance benefits. Combined with a complete care and maintenance programme, this allows Kährs to offer a guarantee of 30 years on its Original range and 12 years on its linnea range.

THe BeST ClImATe STABIlITySince wood is a natural material, that is affected by climatic changes, a wood floor moves with the seasons, i.e. it swells in high humidity and shrinks in low humidity. Kährs multi-layered construction minimizes this movement. It provides the correct balance between the layers – top, core and back – and ensures the floor remains stable in all conditions.

uNDerFlOOr HeATING Kährs wood floors are ideally suited to underfloor heating, provided that they are installed as recommended, using the correct underlay, etc. remember that the surface temperature of the finished floor must never exceed 27°C, in any area.

THe eASIeST INSTAllATIONKährs floors are easy to install, thanks to the ingenious Woodloc® joint. The boards lock together mechanically, with virtually invisible joints, providing perfect results, fast! The superior fit also enhances the floor’s performance and durability.

INSTAllATION TOOlS AND mATerIAlSKährs offers a wide range of tools and materials to make installation easy and help achieve a perfect end result. The range includes a variety of underlays which offer moisture protection and acoustic benefits, as well as installation tools, and finishing trims, skirtings and mouldings to match floors throughout the range.

CAre AND mAINTeNANCeKährs Care and maintenance range includes a variety of products, specially designed to care for Kährs individual surface treatments. The range also includes repair and refurbishment products. Detailed maintenance instructions are available in the online Installation Guide and maintenance repair Guide at www.kahrs.co.uk
