President’s Report

I am extremely pleased to announce that member Danielle Butson, with her Labra-dor Tia achieved the title of ADAA Regular Australian Agility Champion on 25 Febru-ary 2017. Tia is Danielle’s first ever agility dog, and Danielle says there was a lot of hard work, and a lot of fun in gaining this Award. Well done, and congratulations from everyone at Dog Club on this out-standing achievement. (Photo courtesy Danielle shows Tia with her Awards).

We had another great start to our Dog Training year on 5 February 2017. I am very pleased to welcome back so many members from last year, and to break all records for our new member intake, with 39 handlers and their 28 dogs joining us for the first time. It was a very busy morn-ing for our team at the Clubhouse and at the New Member table. Thank you to vol-unteer committee members; Cheryl, Rosemary, Bea, Margaret and Colleen who did an outstanding job to make sure everyone was registered, and ready to start classes on time. Welcome to all our new members, enjoy your train-ing, practice often and have fun with your dog.

I made brief mention of the Australia Day Demonstration in my last report, and in this month’s Newsletter we have lots of photos, taken on the day, thanks to Colleen. Thank you Diane for designing the obedience routine, which looked terrific with all the dogs in perfect stays, and to Liz and Diane who put together the rest of the program, which demonstrated the dogs skills in agility, fly ball, flag races, retrieve, soccer! and weave poles. It was a won-derful promotion for our Club and a credit to everyone involved. Our demon-stration team led by Rick and Liz will be performing again at the Milton Show on Friday 3 March around lunchtime. The demonstration is held in the Dog Rings on the eastern side, and we welcome new member Lynette with Pip for their first performance.

This summer we have experienced some very hot temperatures which prompt-ed your Committee to prepare an Extreme Weather Policy which was adopted at our last meeting and is included in this month’s Newsletter. We encourage you to check weather forecasts for training days. Whenever possible we will give advance notice of cancellation, either because of extreme weather, or heavy rain , through our web site, Facebook page or email. …..cont

President’s Report cont:

During 2017 the Club will once again hold Obedience and Agility competi-tions for Club members. Consideration is also being given to holding a mem-bers Rally O competition, dates and more details will be provided as soon as available. We will again hold an ADAA Agility Event at the Showground, and the weekend of 19 20 August has been booked for this competition.

Last year several members expressed an interest in training their dogs in fly ball and we are very appreciative of member Bea, who generously gives her time to hold training sessions at 3pm on Saturday afternoons. We will again offer Fly ball training commencing on Saturday 11 March at 3pm in the agility area. All members are welcome, cost is $2 per dog per class.

Committee Meetings are usually held on

the 2nd Sunday of each month after train-

ing - check the Calendar. All Club mem-

bers are welcome to attend. Alternatively

you can talk to any Committee member,

especially one of the 3 General Committee

members, Jan, Alison and Lori and ask

them to raise suggestions for discussion on

your behalf. There is also a suggestion box

at the Clubhouse.

Saturday 4 March - Fun Jumping & Agility Competition run by MUDTC as part of Milton Show. Plus Milton Show Championship Dog Show held in Dog Rings on east side of Showground.

Sunday 5 March - NO DOG TRAINING

Saturday 11 March 3pm - Fly ball practice classes resume in the Agility area at the Showground

Sunday 12 March - New Member joining day.

Training Class fee is $2 per dog per class.

Members can pre-pay several weeks in advance if they wish. Once you have pre-paid your name is added to the book at the New Member table, and $2 marked off each time you attend class.

Please arrive at the Showground in time for your class, 10 minutes before class start time as a minimum.

If you need to purchase equipment at the Clubhouse please arrive at least 20 minutes early.

Handlers must wear filled in shoes such as trainers. Please wear your name badge and bring your Dog Club bag with all your gear for training, including a toy, water bowl for your dog and soft food treats. We sell bags of soft treats for $3.

If you take your dog for a run in the Off Leash Park and no-tice the poo bags have run out, or that the bin needs empty-ing, please let us know.

Annual Membership Fee Renewal. If you joined Dog Club before 1/10/2016 your Annual Membership renewal of $10 ($11 for a family) is now due. Members must renew by 30 April 2017.

Immunisation record - remember to bring your dog’s im-munisation record for us to sight each 12 months.

Next Club meeting is scheduled for Sunday 12 March after training, everyone welcome, or if you can’t attend and want to raise a matter, please discuss with one of our General Committee members; Lori Muir, Jan Lyall or Alison Nagle.

Training your Dog

To get and keep their attention YOU have to be more exciting and in-teresting than anything else in the world around your dog, regularly practise the ‘watch’ exercise you learned in class.

Click and reward with treats and praise as soon as your dog looks at you always use a happy and enthusiastic voice tone when talking to and praising your dog, make training fun - bounce around, run for a couple of steps, clap your hands, generally be a bit silly & light-hearted during early training.

Never let the lead tighten as this simply ends up as a tug-of-war and the dog will pay even less attention to you. Use your ‘focus’ word & treat liberally when the dog loosens the lead use plenty of treats or a toy motivator during training.

To make ‘come when called’ worthwhile for your dog never use an angry or scolding voice to call your dog, make returning to you a fun game and very rewarding, make yourself the ‘best thing since sliced bread’ in your dog’s eyes, use exciting and very tasty treats for this exercise.

Remember there are many, many fascinating things ‘over there’ and what you have has to be of greater value to the dog.

The bottom line is that all early training must be happy, great fun and offer a greater reward that whatever else is in the dog’s immediate environment.

A noisy, busy environment makes it even harder for the dog to con-centrate on you. So start your training at home and progress slowly to places where ‘things’ are happening.

Competition News Well done to members who have attended recent Shows. At Wollongong & Districts Kennel Club Show on the 4th February Belinda's little Coco won her Baby Puppy Class morning and afternoon. Alison Nagle’s Livvy won Challenge Bitch, Best of Breed and Best Intermediate in Breed both Shows. Di-ane’s Rusty won Challenge Dog, R/up Best of Breed and Best Australian Bred in Breed.

On 15 February, Sue Swaney with Bonnie and Lass, Jill Neilsen with Koda and Diane Richmond with Rusty went to Bermagui Rally O Trial. During the morning trial, Rusty was successful in gaining his 2nd pass in Rally O Advanced. In the afternoon a 2nd Rally O competition was held, Diane did not stay for the afternoon but said “a big congratula-tions to Sue & Bonnie 1st Place in Rally Novice with 97 points, & Lass with 82 points, Jill & Koda gained their 1st pass in Rally Advanced with 95 points. The afternoon trial which started at 5pm was a great success. so proud of them, they did our Club proud”.

Extreme Weather Policy The Club will not conduct, or continue to conduct, official training sessions when the ambient

temperature exceeds 35 deg C as measured in the shade of areas used for training on hot days.

Instructors will also use their judgement as to whether or not extreme humidity may cause exces-

sive heat load on handlers and/or dogs, and may choose to abandon or modify training as deemed

appropriate, at their discretion.

Individual handlers are also encouraged to consider their particular circumstances (handler/dog

team). The handler should always feel free to withdraw from training if she/he is concerned about

the effect of the prevailing conditions on their team.

Training will not be conducted during lightning storms.

To start you will need to purchase a Silicon Oven Tray from K Mart - cost $5.

You can use any meat or fish you like, just use your imagination - the mixture needs to be quite wet (use egg(s)) so it will spread.

Lambs fry ( I used a half one to make enough to cover the tray.), 2 eggs, table-spoon of flour and blended eve-rything in a blender. Needs to be fairly runny to go into the small indents of the tray. Bake in preheated oven at 160 fan forced or 180 ordinary for about 10 minutes.

That's it. Evidently you can use mince meat, chicken, turkey etc., tuna, sardines, anything your dog likes that can be minced plus the eggs and flour. Hint: If you use mince (I've tried turkey, with great success), make sure you moisten the spatula (like you would your hands when making rissoles...).

5 tins sardines in oil 1/4 Cup parmesan cheese 1/4 Cup coconut flour 1 clove garlic Put it all in a food processor until well blended, spread it in your treat tray use an icing spatula to spread it out and get the excess off. Cook it at 180° for 15 mins.

Milton Show MUDTC runs a Fun Agility & Jumping competition in our Agility area all day on Saturday 4th, come by and have a look at the dogs in action. Also the Championship Dog Show is on again all day Satur-day 4 March in the Dog Rings on the east side. Alt-hough not a MUDTC event, our Chief Instructor Diane is the Dog Show Secretary and Club mem-bers assist Diane on the day in the office. You will see many different dogs on show, so call by and see them all while visiting Milton Show.

So Proud Member Leanne’s daughter Abby went to Berry Show the first weekend in February and Leanne was “So proud of Abby and Billie. They took out Supreme Champion Pet in Show at the Berry Show today. Up against about 50 other dogs and multi-ple other types of pets. Best Wishes Our very best wishes to Margaret Rudd who will be away from Dog Club for the next month recuperat-ing after an operation. The Club gave Margaret a get well card and gift and received this message from her . “ Thank you so much for the lovely get well gift, it was such a lovely variety of things to cheer me up and also useful.
