P.T.G. UPDATE Despite the cold and snowy weather, we had another great turnout of parents and teachers at the January PTG meeting! Those that attended were: Connie Clinton, Renay Jagiela, Jennifer Rearick, Vanessa Brown, Dana Darman, Heather Naasko, Stehanie & Scott McKee, Lynette Minto, Mr. Martin, Janice Urevig, Joanne DeFries, Brenda Sterk, and Stephanie Compton. We received several nice thank you notes from the teachers for the books that we purchased for their classrooms at Christmas. The Hebron Food Pantry also sent us a letter of appreciation for the monetary donation that was made in December for the purchase of holiday hams. For those of you that took advantage of the SCRIPT gift card sales, a total of $7,000 in gift cards were ordered during the last sale before the Christmas holiday. That means a profit of $473.00 for our school! Way to go! (And good job on beating the holiday crowds) Thank you to Stephanie Mathews who organizes the SCRIPT card sales. Moving forward, we plan to have a SCRIPT sale once a month. They can be purchased for everyday items as well as for gifts. For example, if you spend $100 a month at WalMart on groceries, why not purchase a $100 gift card and a portion of that will be given back to Hebron Elementary?

The Market Day Fundraiser items were delivered on December 17th and all went smoothly! Many thanks to Jen Rearick, Heather Naasko, Vanessa Brown and Mrs. Vawter for their help on this day! Miss Halajscik and Mrs. Kaeb's kindergarten classes tied for the December Attendance Award with 11 absences each. Their classes will be honored with popcorn parties later in the month. Kindergarten Round Up has been set for April 16-17 and Grandparents Day will be on May 15, 2015. We will be in need of parent volunteers for both occasions. Mark your calendars now and more information will be coming home in the next couple of months. We are exploring ideas for a fun activity that would involve the parents AND children. Suggestions have been for a dance, family movie night, board game night or special reading night. If you have an idea, we would like to hear it at our next meeting on February 9th in the Elementary Library. Childcare will be provided. Hope to see you there!!

3RD GRADE NEWS FROM MISS DUNLOP’S CLASS Our class just finished an exciting Science unit on rocks and minerals. Our most fun experiment involved using streak plates to find out how the color of the rock/mineral compares with the streak it leaves on the plate. This week we are starting a Science unit on simple machines. Each student will be making their own simple machine for the Third Grade Simple Machine Show in mid-February. We also just finished a novel study on the book Stone Fox. We also watched the movie on the big screen at the high school! It was great to compare/contrast what happened in the book and the movie. Our class found a lot of differences between the two!

MRS. VAWTER’S MUSIC ROOM NEWS 5th Grade News-Fifth Graders will begin playing the recorder in February. In order to begin our study, recorders and books will be ordered. Each student should have returned their order form by today. If you have not seen the note, ask your 5th Grade student or contact Mrs. Vawter. 4th Grade News-Students are currently studying Indiana songs. Included are songs that are about Indiana or composed by an Indiana native. Students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade have been studying and playing drums and instruments from around the world. Some of the drums and instruments that students have played or will play next week are: bongos, conga, djembe, log drum, tubano, talking drum, cabasa, kalimba (thumb piano), maracas and claves. Students have used the instruments to accompany songs from Africa or the Caribbean Islands.

ALL FOR BOOKS COIN WARS – Mrs. Patterson We will have the Coin a Day Challenge during the week of January 26. That week our school will participate in a classroom level coin drive called the Coin for a Day Challenge. Each day represents a different type of coin. The classroom generating the highest overall total will receive a book for every student. *Penny Monday *Nickel Tuesday *Dime Wednesday *Quarter Thursday *Any Coin Friday If you have loose coins hiding under couch cushions, floor mats, in pants pockets, or the bottom of your bag, put them to good use by giving students more access to books they’ll want to read! NEWS FROM MRS. UREVIG’S THIRD GRADE Busy! Busy! Busy! That is the best way to describe our first semester and amazingly enough, now it’s over! The students worked very hard in the first half of the school year, and their grades reflect it. I am very proud of them for their hard work! The second semester began with a bang. We just completed a unit in Science about rocks and minerals. We did several experiments. A speaker from the Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District visited to speak to us about fossils and rocks found in our area. We watched numerous movies and computer visuals to enhance our learning. Lastly, we made a book about our changing planet that includes earthquakes, volcanoes, different types of erosion, and weathering. The children always love studying about volcanoes and earthquakes, and their interest was reflected in the awesome test grades they received! Currently, we are moving into a chapter about simple machines. As a culminating activity at the end of that unit, each student will design and build a simple machine. Then the entire Third Grade will come together for our very own Simple Machine Show! Since returning from Christmas Break, we read the novel Stone Fox in class. It is the story of a boy who enters a dog sled race to raise money and save his family farm. We did many activities with this story including watching the movie on the “big screen” at the High School as a comparison. As a tie-in to the story, we are having my version of an Iditarod Race. The children are working in teams to earn points. Points accumulate from completing homework, good behavior, “A” Spelling tests, passing Reading Counts tests, passing 100’s Club tests, and any other “A” test. This is always a fun activity, and the children get really competitive. We are nearing the end of the contest and have a true race at this point. All participants will be rewarded, but I am anxious to see who will end up being crowned “Top Dog”! Good Luck mushers!

NEWS FROM FOURTH GRADE – Mrs. Marshall The school year is going by very quickly! It is hard to believe that we are in the second semester. Fourth graders have been working hard in all subject areas. We have begun the unit on Inventions in Reading. All of the students are creating an invention which they will share with their classmates at the Invention Convention. Mr. Ingram from N.I.P.S.C.O. visited our classes this week. He used a model of a street to explain the dangers of electricity. The students learned a lot of information about electrical safety from this presentation. They thoroughly enjoyed this experience which increased their understanding of the Science unit. In the coming weeks, we will continue to prepare the students for the upcoming testing which begins in March. It is our goal that the fourth graders will be very well prepared to be successful on the tests.
