Newsletter No.8 Monday 26 th March 2012 Dear Parents Last weekend’s “Weekend of Service” was a great success and the objectives were achieved, namely pulling the school community and neighbourhood together as part of the Neighbours Day Aotearoa and completing some much-needed work around the school. Tasks completed were: South walls of Room 14 and the school house painted Replanted garden in front of the Rahiri mansion A new sandpit for the junior children constructed The school swimming pool emptied and prepared for painting Concrete path laid by astro turf court New outdoor secondary seating constructed and BBQ tables painted Re-shelving of all the Middle School resources into the newly remodelled storerooms The lower adventure playground steelwork sanded and repainted Corridors and toilets cleaned Feeding of the 5,000…morning teas, lunches, afternoon teas and BBQ dinners Trees cut down by Room 13 “Hebron History” mural painted and attached to wall by sandpit showing the site was first a paddock for rearing Clydesdale horses, then became an orchard, the Caughey mansion built in the late 1800s and then donated to the Plunket Society in 1923 to become the first Karitane baby hospital in NZ and finally becoming the home of Hebron Christian College On behalf of the school Board, the staff and the students, I say “Thank you” to all of you who came along on Saturday and/or Sunday. Your commitment to the school was greatly appreciated. And we all say “Well done and Thank You” to Mrs Carolyn Welch who organised the Weekend of Service and did such an amazing job.

Auckland Christian Schools Swimming Sports Last Tuesday saw six Auckland Christian Schools come together to compete in swimming. The event took place at the West Wave in Henderson. Hebron fielded a team of 24 swimmers aged between 8 and 16 years old. Hebron had swimmers representing us in nearly all the events and our students did us proud not only in the in the competition but also in their behaviour and co-operation. Hebron was again placed 4th overall in the competition. The day went very smoothly and was very well organised by staff and parents of Kingsway School. We would also like to say a big thank you to the Hebron parents who assisted with timekeeping, group organisation and with transport. Our day at the Cameron Pool was well attended by caring and supportive parents and grandparents. Our very first Lapathon saw some great swimmers doing their best to raise funds and display their excellent swimming abilities.

Two Days Left to Pre-order Entertainment Books

Eden-Albert Year 5 & 6 Swimming Sports Hayley Mulu represented Hebron Christian College at the Eden-Albert Zone Swimming Sports at Cameron Pool last Thursday. She swam in 3 races and gained 3rd in the Girls Y5 Backstroke, 4th in the Y5 Girls Breaststroke and 5th in the Y5 Girls Freestyle. Well done Hayley Secondary Speech Finals Speech Finals for secondary students will be held this Tuesday (tomorrow) between 10:50am and midday. Finalists are as follows: Judges: Mr Grant Richardson, Mrs Lois Huston & Mrs Leverne Harris Junior Secondary Finalists: Amy Esau, Joshua Scott, Hannah Simpson, Sarah Airey, Bethany Oram Senior Secondary Finalists: Ruth Turner, Jason Clague, Sang-Jin Park, Anushka Chauhan, Emilee Gillies Family and friends of the finalist are encouraged to attend the finals. All others welcome. Senior Athletics on Wednesday The Senior Athletics (Year 4 – Year 13) will take place THIS WEDNESDAY (28th March) at the Lyndale Athletic Track, Olympic Park, Portage Rd, New Lynn.

Parents…Please remember to: 1. Have your children dressed in their PE uniform with a hat and sun lotion. 2. Pack morning tea, a lunch and drink. No purchased lunches available at the track. 3. Arrange to have your child dropped off at the venue by 8:45am and picked up at the end of the day at 3:00pm. Phone/contact the office TOMORROW if you would have GREAT difficulty in transporting your child/ren to/from this event…a teacher or another parent may be able to help transport your child from the school to the venue and back to school. 4. Urgent: Volunteer your services to help teachers run the events and/or offer to run in the Parent relay team

5. Cancellation in the event of wet/cold weather will be posted on the school website (www.hebron.ac.nz) from 7:30am onwards

The accumulation of laps for the Lapathon has now come to an end and the laps should be recorded on your child’s Lapathon Sponsor Sheet. Students can now collect their sponsorship money and bring it to the school office. A receipt will be issued for the money handed in. Thank you students and parents for getting behind this fundraising exercise helping to purchase much-needed video cameras, video editing software and laptops for the school.

We congratulate Luka Crosbie (Room 9) who has just completed another successful Athletics season. Officials regard Luka as one of the top all round athletes in Auckland athletics in the Junior age groups. (7-11yrs olds).

Luka's achievements at Auckland Championship Level for the best 9 year old boys across Auckland:December 2011 - Auckland Relays 100m (team of 4) Result: Gold Medal Champion - 1st Feb 2012 - Auckland Pentathlon Championships (Multi Events 100m, Long Jump, Discus) - Result: Silver

Medal 2nd - Auckland Top Ten Championship (Multi Events 400m, 100m, Long Jump, Discus) - Result: Gold
