HEATHRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL Newsletter Dear Parents/Carers, Last week we watched Mr Bolton’s wonderful year 6 and 7 students present the first whole school assembly. We also announced the School Captains and Faction Captains for 2013. I am already very I impressed by the calibre of this year’s leadership group. They have a variety of responsibilities around the school that help us run effectively and I hope you are all as proud of them as I am. I am positive they will continue to blossom under Mr Bolton’s tutorage and with your support. With the cooler weather arriving this week we have begun the Fitness First program with students from pre-primary to year 7. For those of you who are new to the school, the varied activities are run from 8.45 – 9.00am Tuesday to Friday (but not on Assembly Thursdays) each week. The aim is to improve stamina, flexibility and skills for physical activity. Teachers began today with their own classes. Tomorrow we begin the rotations to the next activity and teacher. Students continue the rotations until they arrive back at there own class teacher. Next term the activities will be changed but with the same aim. It will be important for students to arrive on time in the mornings. If they are late they should go directly to their class group and give their late slip to their classroom teacher after the fitness session. Students will need to wear shoes that are suitable for activity and of course their sun-smart hats. Teachers will be easily identified by their own bright orange hats. This week students have enjoyed their first Drama lessons yesterday with Ms Malone. She will be helping to build on the oral language and literacy priority that was identified for our students by encouraging speech, language and self expression. Years 3 and 7 will not begin their Drama sessions until after NAPLAN week so that their classroom teacher can spend a little extra time with test practise and content revision for their readiness. It is wonderful to be able to staff this initiative after increasing our student enrolments and therefore our staffing numbers for 2013. I look forward to seeing many of you at the year 3 and 4 assembly next week which is also Harmony Week. CONGRATULATIONS TO PAST STUDENTS

We would like to congratulate the following past students of HPS on receiving awards for being the top students in year 11, 2012 at Belridge Senior High School:

ICY POLES Icy Poles are available every Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime for .50c each outside the library. Please remember that it is strictly 1 icy pole per student. Available for years PP-7 only. STUDENT BANKING Student Banking is held every THURSDAY in the Library. Every deposit, no matter how big or small earns commission for the P&C. RECYCLE Recycle your unwanted newspapers (must be unwrapped from plastic), batteries, corks, ring pulls (separated from cans) and printer cartridges in the undercover area every THURSDAY. Children earn raffle tickets and go into a draw to win a pick from the treasure box. Please note that we DO NOT recycle plastic bags or aluminium cans. EASTER RAFFLE AND COLOURING COMPETITION Information is going home today. Tickets are 3 for $5. Both the raffle and colouring competition will be drawn on Tuesday, 26 March. Donations of Easter eggs and anything Easter related has begun and closes on Monday, 25 March. Thank you for your support. SAFETY HOUSE The P&C are looking for someone to become the Safety House leader. This involves keeping in contact with current Safety Houses within our zone and answering any questions for potential new Safety Houses.

P&C NEWS

Dear Parents/Carers,

HATS Sadly, a few students are missing out on playing at recess and lunch times because they are forgetting their hats. When this occurs they miss out on important social interactions, friendships and fun. We are also starting the whole school morning fitness activities this week. Your child will also need to wear appropriate footwear and a hat for these activities as well. Please ensure your child has their hat each day. HEAD LICE We have already had Head Lice within the school environment this year. Try really hard to be on top of treating this as it escalates across the school quickly. Be proactive and make a habit of checking your child's hair on a regular basis. LITERACY All of our staff attended Professional Learning recently and selected workshops to enhance delivery of curriculum in areas of choice: ipads, fundamental movement skills, maths, science and others. I certainly embrace the use of ipads and technology in the classroom and have added some new apps to my teaching repertoire too. I have enjoyed taking part in many assessment tasks and planning for learning at our school. We have been collaborating with the team from the Speech and Language WCLDC Outreach to fine tune our Literacy curriculum delivery and we will be participating in further learning sessions over the year. I am very excited to see the energy around learning tasks and the positive achievements so early in the term. Here are a few Literacy websites to try: http://www.starfall.com/ http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/interactive/literacy.html#13 HARMONY WEEK The colour orange was selected for Harmony Day because it is an active colour that implies celebration. So to Celebrate many things at Heathridge PS we will participate in activities to promote getting along, encouraging our differences, being fair, looking out for others etc. I'm sure the staff and students will enjoy these activities. Have a great educational fortnight. Amanda Pickersgill Deputy Principal

WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE—THOMAS HARTNELL

Thomas Hartnell (Year 6) is raising money to support the Leukaemia Foundation World's Greatest Shave - Shave for a Cause. He will be shaving his long, red hair to raise money but also to donate his hair for natural hair wigs. Already generous families are sending in donations to support this worthy cause - though we would like to show Thomas our support by encouraging him to raise as much as possible. Please send your donations in to the front office for collection. A inspiring and thoughtful effort Thomas!

Recently we read a book called ‘Mr Tiddles’. Here are two story maps by Emily Sharp and Hannah Fewster. In science we talked about ‘Minibeasts” and made some predictions. These work samples are by Dewi Van dePeppel and Jamelia Dann.
