ONCE UPON A TIME ...

AND TWICE UPON A TIME...

AND THRICE UPON A TIME...

Albienne, the oldest, enjoyed cake very much.

Beatrix, the next, enjoyed the expelling of energy and the world within which to do it.

Carmen, the youngest, found the world to be a heavy thing, and carried it upon her shoulders.

FAIRY TALE: A story about magical and imaginary beings and lands. So, while it is not real, things may feel familiar.

AGE 11 And everything happened quickly after that…The girls get a stepmother when their father marries a woman named Eleanor. (Eleanor will not be portrayed by an actor, we will all imagine together that she is on stage.)

All together they take a trip into the forest, and there, their father leaves the triplets to find their place in the world.

AGE 10... Until one day, it ended… The triplets suffer an incredible loss. “Our mama, who we so loved, was dead.”

The actors in this story play many parts, including the narrators. And this story is a ...

Father

THE TRIPLETS lived happily in the forest with their father and mother. (The mother is not depicted by an actor in this story, we pretend she is there.)

“Because the world is round and after half a globe’s worth of walking away from here, you will start walking towards here. You’ll come back up the other side of the planet and eventually find your way to me.”

AGE 12And once upon a time, twice upon a time, thrice upon a time, three girls, who were sisters, who were triplets - they found themselves alone in the wood.

Albienne went forward and laughed.

Beatrix walked the other way, back toward their Papa and cried.

Carmen stayed there, in the woods, and did nothing.

AGE 14Beatrix arrived, one day, at an ocean…

She meets a lady in a lighthouse and together they make the lighthouse into a super submarine and head West, through the ocean.

AGE 18Carmen built a house…

Living in the woods, she enjoyed nature, but when winter came, she wanted a house. She talked with the animals and they helped her to build her house. But she missed company. (The Animals will also all be pretend and we will all use our imagination when household items become animals. For example: A sock might become a cute little bunny!)

AGE 16She comes across a village being attacked by Vikings! Albienne stands up to the vikings and helps the villagers in a battle.

In this part of the story there is a giant battle. (Battles can be loud, this battle will be a little bit loud too, but also really funny. All of the tools used to fight will be stuff you can find in your own home. For example: someone might use a wisk to fight someone else with a ladle.)

When the battle ends, Albienne decides to become a leader. “My days of eating cake and caring for nothing are over.”

This is picture the set designer made to show us what the set could look like, it is called an artist rendering!

AGE 22They miss their sisters…

Carmen is home…

NOTES ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION ...• This play is a fairy tale and is told through narration. That means the actors tell the

story like they are reading a book. The narrators play many roles, including the father, lady in the lighthouse, Peter, villagers, and more.

• The play follows the life of three sisters, triplets, and follows them as they grow up.

• In this play, the mother dies. It sets the story into motion. It is a sad moment that comes at the beginning of the play.

• Eleanor (The Stepmother) will not be played by an actor, we all will imagine that she is on the stage and the other actors will pretend to interact with her.

• Sometimes there might be animals referenced in the play, but the animals will all be items that you can find in your house, like a sock we might pretend is a bunny.

• There is a battle scene in the play. The battle scene will be loud and all of the fighting tools used to fight will also be things you can find in your own home, like a pot or a pan.

• The actors move around the theater through the audience, walking down the aisles. But they will not touch you.

• The actors will play music with live instruments on stage and in the aisles.

• All of the scenes will take place in the house and we wil know the locations by different household items used just like the animals or fighting tools. Once again, we will all imagine the locations that the girls go to together!
