Temperature is the measure of the average
kinetic energy of the particles
(molecules/atoms) in an object.
Heat is the transfer of
energy!!!
Question: What happens when an ice cube is added to warm soda?
● Heat is transferred from the soda to the ice.
Celsius Scale■ Celsius Scale: Most commonly used in most of the world except
the United States and a few other places. Unit of temperature is called a degree. Based on the boiling and freezing points of water.
■ Boiling Point: The temperature at which water boils. 100o C at sea level.
■ Freezing Point: The temperature at which water freezes. 0o C at sea level.
Another Scale…
■ Kelvin is another way of measuring temperature.
■ Scientists use Kelvin to explain the behaviour of gases.
■ “Absolute Zero” is measured in Kelvin – which is the coldest possible temperature
■ 0 Kelvin = -273 ºC
Conversion formulae - Don’t stress over 0F to 0C - this is rarely used in Chemistry BUT converting from 0C to K is !!!!!!
I know, I know, but try these just for
practice because you never know what they
will put on the EOC!!!
