Ruhstrat GmbH supplies world wide production lines for carbon fibers with heat treatment plants. This ena-bles manufacturers to increase their

production capacity.

Carbon fibers are considered as one of the most impor-tant materials of the future.

Particularly due to the devel-opment in the energy sector this

material has strongly gained in im-portance. In the air craft industry

more and more components are used out of carbon fiber, because they are much lighter than components out of aluminium and therefore the gas con-sumption of air planes can be reduced enormously. Also when using renew-able energy carbon fibers play a key role. The rotor blades of big offshore wind power plants consist usually of carbon fibers. Therefore the world wide demand for carbon fibers has strongly increased.

For more than 25 years Ruhstrat GmbH from Germany is developing heat treat-ment plants for carbon fiber produc-tion, which enable the manufacturers of carbon fibers to increase their pro-duction enormously. Today’s industrial furnace plants make a production ca-pacity of more than 2,000 tons per year possible.

For decades Ruhstrat GmbH is an im-portant supplier for the carbon indus-try. With its complex industrial furnace plants the company supplies the deci-sive core technology for the production of carbon fibers. The plants are used for carbonizing and graphitizing. In the plants yarns, felts, fleeces, bands, fabrics, up to pipes and other parts are produced.

The scope of delivery of the industrial furnace plants of Ruhstrat GmbH for a carbon fiber line include the following components for the heat treatment: a LT- furnace (low temperature

furnace) till approx. 1,050 °C a HT- furnace (high temperature

furnace) till approx. 1,800 °C a UHT- furnace (ultra high temper-

ature furnace) till approx. 2,600 °C

Furthermore Ruhstrat has developed special inlet and outlet sealing boxes, cooling zones, gas distribution sta-tions, gas pre-heating equipment, cooling water distributors as well as a complete measuring and control sta-tion with its own process control sys-tem for the industri-al furnace plants.

lT-FurnaCE The Muffle has patented bearings.

The expansion of the muffle from the muffles middle to the outside.

The expansion in longitudinal direction is supported and controlled by a special equipment.

Construction of the muffle is made by a special software.

This eliminates thermal tension inside the muffle.

Durability and life time of the muffle increases.

By using special stream plates in the in-let area of the muffle, the condensate of tar is minimized.

Heating consists of high quality ceramic fiber modules with integrated heat-ing. Heating conductors are made for a max. heating conductor temperature of 1,180 °C. This means a durability of several years.

By using these heating modules a very homogeneous temperature spreading is attained.

The insulation of the backward wall con-sists of high quality mineral fiber. This reduces the loss of heat. Lost power is approx. 350 W per m² at 850° furnace temperature.

The body of the furnace is equipped with special cooling plates which cool directly the heating space, no „sandwich“ construction: metal-wall -thermal conduction cement –cooling plates. This avoids local overheating of the body.

The insulation consists of only high quality graphite insulation (graphite felts). As last layer there is a high qual-ity ceramic fiber.

The heating is located around the muffle. This makes the furnace to at-tain a very homogeneous balanced temperature.

Each heating zone is 3-phase. This means that the supply network system is charged in a symmetric way.

As an option we can provide special-ly by Ruhstrat manufactured variable transformers. Advantages over thy-rister regulations are that the power network is not loaded with harmonic waves. Expensive compensation equip-ment is therefore not needed.

The high current transformers manu-factured by Ruhstrat are integrated into the supporting stand. There is no need for caves on the ground floor.

Water coolings are cased as much as possible. Hoses will be avoided where it is possible.

sEaling BoxEs Sealing boxes are made of stainless

steel.

Inside the sealing boxes there are ad-justable and distortion free orifices made of stainless steel, CFC, graph-ite, according to applied temperature. Therefore the transition gap is constant all over the total width.

The inlet and outlet compartments can be opened and shut together or sepa-rately by hand wheels. This means that the gap can be adjusted to the thread pass-through in ideal way during the process.

The inlet sealing boxes are insulated and can be run at 400 °C hot nitrogen.

The gas heater including the necessary gas armatures is available at an extra charge.

The outlet sealing boxes are water cooled and serve in cooperation with the inlet cold nitrogen as cooling zone.
