German federal energy saving ordinance versus Energy Label.

In Germany, the German federal energy saving ordinance stipulates how much energy a building is allowed to consume for heating, domestic hot water, ventilation and cooling. The Energy Label is the European-wide labelling of appliances with their energy efficiency class. In both cases, the classification uses letter grades: A stands for maximum energy efficiency. In order to further differentiate in this high performance class, a plus sign is used. A+++ is the maximum value for the energy label, A+ the maximum for the building energy certificate. The two designations, however, have nothing to do with each other and cannot be compared. However, both have the same function: making it easy to estimate and compare energy consumption.

Building energy classes. In Germany, an energy certificate must be available for every building to be sold or rented. This means that any new tenant or property buyer can assess the energy consumption of the building. The certificate provides two values: the primary and the final energy consumption. The primary energy consumption depends on the building insulation and the heating system used. The final energy consumption indicates how much energy the heating system actually uses in this house.

Since 1 January 2016, the German federal energy saving ordinance has stipulated that the primary energy consumption of a new building should not exceed 61.98 kWh/m² per year. For buildings with a fossil-fuel heating system, this means that the building envelope has to be insulated much more. And in addition, an investment must be made in a solar-thermal heating support system. In comparison to this: Due to the improved primary energy factor of 1.8 (previously 2.4), no further energy efficiency measures have to be implemented in buildings with a heat pump, even according to the latest version of the German federal energy saving ordinance. In the German federal energy saving ordinance reference building, new buildings with an air-to-water heat pump achieve energy class A and brine-to-water heat pump go all the way up to A+. Without any further measures. In existing buildings, the use of heat pumps can improve the energy efficiency class by up to 6 classes.

These colourful stickers are already well-known from refrigerators, washing machines and vacuum cleaners. The EU energy efficiency label is also mandatory for heat pumps.

The highlight: The labels can also be assigned for a combination with the domestic hot water preparation – and even for the complete integrated system, including solar thermal, domestic hot water preparation, temperature control, etc. Even more good arguments for sensible investments in the overall system!

The most important label info: the efficiency class, which is classified into a total of nine levels from very good (A++, starting 2019: A+++) to poor efficiency (G) for the individual device stickers. Finally, all heat generators can be directly compared with one another. Not a problem for heat pumps – they achieve the best possible results up to A++. Whereas boilers (oil, gas, biomass) only achieve a simple A.

So, no need to worry about the new labels. Just take advantage of the associated opportunities.

Experts agree: Climate change leads to higher temperatures, leading to more hot days … cooling is becoming ever more important! Reversible heat pumps simply run in the other direction and become a “refrigerator”: They remove heat from the interior and, using the compressor, actively release it to the outside – the air, the ground or the groundwater. With the help of ground probes or using the groundwater, heat pumps can also passively cool: Then they pass the cold stored below directly into the house.

A heat pump is the only heating system that can both heat and cool – ensuring the perfect temperature in any weather conditions. In winter, even with outside temperatures down to minus 22 °C, a heat pump can ensure that no one has to feel cold in the house. By drawing the necessary heat from the air, ground or groundwater and actively bringing the temperature up to the desired level using the compressor in the refrigeration circuit. The domestic hot water generated can be distributed via the floor, but also using classic radiators – and it is also available for showers, bathing and washing all year round.

Whether air, groundwater or ground – heat energy comes from the outside and is transported via the heat pump into the house. And regardless of the season: Dimplex heat pumps operate from plus 35 to minus 22 degrees Celsius. Reversible devices can also be utilised for cooling rooms in the summer months.

If you use free renewable energy, you help to save the environment, reduce your heating costs and you are no longer at the mercy of the price of fossil fuels like gas or oil.

In addition, heat pumps are a future-proof investment because the longer they run, the more climate friendly and profitable they become: By 2020, the share of renewable energies in the electricity mix will increase to 35 per cent, and 50 per cent by 2030. Overall, this boost also increases the importance of electricity compared to fossil fuels, which will become scarcer and more expensive.

The core of the heat pump is the refrigerant circuit, where the thermal energy is collected: In the first heat exchanger, the ambient energy (in the ground, air or groundwater) is transferred to the liquid refrigerant, which evaporates as a result. The temperature of the gaseous refrigerant is then increased further by the compressor – electric power is required in this part of the process. In the second heat exchanger, the liquefier, the hot refrigerant gas condenses and thus distributes the thermal energy to the distribution system. After a further pressure and temperature reduction through the expansion valve, the refrigerant can again pass through the circuit.

A water-based heat distribution system distributes the heat throughout the house via surface heating or radiators. If the heat pump is operating, it usually delivers more energy than is needed at the moment. This surplus can be stored in the form of hot water in a domestic hot water cylinder and then used at any time, for example to take a shower. This means that the heat pump does not need to be switched on (and then switched off again) when a small amount of heat is needed. This increases its efficiency further and has a positive effect on the service life.

Oil heating out, heat pump in? Yes, it can be so simple. The fact that heat pumps always require underfloor heating is indeed a widespread rumour, but it is far from true: When you choose Dimplex technology, in many cases existing radiators can be used – so that only the heating unit needs to be replaced and no major reconstruction work is necessary.

Dimplex brine-to-water heat pumps use the ground as a source of energy. Depending on the size and characteristics of the property, the heat stored in the ground is absorbed by probes that delve up to 100 metres into the earth. How far to drill depends on your heating requirements and the conductivity of the soil. If the property is large enough, the energy (generated by the rain and the sun) can also be “harvested” by collectors, which are placed just below the frost line. Maximum performance, low operating costs and flexibility in application: Our brine-to-water heat pumps not only heat and produce domestic hot water – they are also ideal for the passive and, depending on the model, active cooling in the summer.

Summer or winter. The heat pump does its job.

Dimplex air-to-water heat pumps use an energy source that you don’t need to tap first. Since air is available everywhere and free of charge in unlimited quantities, installation and investment costs are low – and the devices easy to install. The outside air is sucked in via a fan in order to remove heat from it; reversible models can also provide refreshing cooling in the summer when the direction of circulation is reversed. This works all year round from plus 35 to minus 22 degrees. All you hear is a whisper-quiet breeze: Dimplex technology developed in the sound laboratory reduces the noise level to a minimum – and in particular filters out the annoying frequencies. Whether installed indoors or outdoors: Dimplex air-to-water heat pumps heat (or cool) quietly, economically and in an environmentally friendly way.

Dimplex water-to-water heat pumps are extremely efficient. Since even on coldest days the ground water temperature is constant at around 10 °C, heat generation does not have to compensate for climatic fluctuations. A prerequisite for the using this particular heat source: Groundwater must be available in sufficient quantity, temperature, quality and it must not be too deep. An innovative stainless steel spiral evaporator makes Dimplex units uniquely robust – so they can be used practically independent of the water quality. In the summer, this technology can passively cool in a particularly energy-saving manner.

Bisher mussten die Benutzer eines Heizsystems zwischen Kom-fort oder Effizienz wählen – häufig ohne einschätzen zu können, wo die individuelle Wohlfühltemperatur aller Hausbewohner liegt und welche Auswirkungen das auf die Betriebskosten hat. Die Folge: Der Fachhandwerker musste die Heizkurve immer wieder nachregeln. Mit der Smart Room Heating App von Dimplex ge-lingt es, in einem Schritt zur richtigen Raumtemperatur zu kom-men. Der Fachhandwerker stellt einmalig den gewünschten Heiz-kurvenendpunkt ein – fertig.

Im Alltag wird per App direkt mit dem Wärmepumpenmanager (WPM) kommuniziert. Dabei ermöglicht eine Einzelraumregelung der Wärmepumpe via Dimplex Smart RTC+ den direkten Zugriff auf jeden Raum. Das Heizungssystem weiß also jederzeit, in wel-chem Raum welche Temperatur herrscht – und kann jeden ein-zeln, unabhängig von den anderen, steuern. Die Raumtemperatur von bis zu 10 Räumen kann komfortabel nach persönlichen Be-dürfnissen auf bis zu ein zehntel Grad genau eingestellt werden.

It’s not only the heat pump installation that is easier and quicker with Dimplex than with other brands - commissioning is also completed in no time by the technician: with the practical online heat pump configurator EasyOn. Via the app or internet browser, from the desk or on the move … The installer is guided reliably to the goal, the controller code, with just a few questions and a process of elimination. The identified code simply has to be entered in the heat pump manager to start the new device – finished. The heat pump starts working. It couldn’t be quicker, easier or more convenient.
