An introduction

What is a Heat pump?

A heat pump is a machine which is used to heat your house in place of a conventional fossil fuel boiler.

Renewable Heat?Heat pumps use electricity to run.

For each kWhr or unit of electricity used the heat pump grabs hold of 2 or 3 units of heat from the air or ground.

The heat from the air / ground is renewable, it is replenished by the sun.

So this part is renewable.

As a result Heat pumps are a 50 -75% renewable heat source.

Is it a simple swap for my boiler?

Radiators• Radiators don’t work the same on heat pumps as they

do on boilers.

• The temperature is lower.

• The heat output is lower so bigger radiators need to be installed

Why Choose a Heat Pump?

New build

In new build developments 20% of energy use must come from a renewable source. Installing heat pumps in some of the houses helps to meet this target.

In 2016 Code 5 is introduced, from this point on gas boilers will no longer be an option in new builds.

Is a heat pump suitable for my House?

Insulation levelHeat pumps suit well insulated properties best.They do not suit very large or badly insulated properties.

Example:in a Code 3 house a heat pump will cost £30 / m^2In a 1980s house this will cost £50 / m^2In a 30s cavity walled house they will cost £70 / m^2And in a solid walled house they can cost £100 / m^2

When you should consider a heat pump

We particularly recommend considering a heat pump if your home is one of the approximately five million properties that are off-gas, or for a new-build property.

Heat pumps are not recommended to replace gas boilers at this time.
