Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) protects human rights and ensures access to justice for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. In the past year, we have had some remarkable accomplishments. With the hard work and expertise of nearly 1,500 pro bono attorneys, NIJC provided 10,000 immigrants and their families access to legal counsel. We helped thousands of children and families seeking asylum in the United States navigate the immigration system. We exposed the lack of transparency and oversight in the immigration detention system where as many as 34,000 people languish each day. We achieved landmark decisions recognizing asylum claims for transgender and LGBT individuals. Together with our partners and supporters, we continue to push the Obama administration to do everything it can to provide immigration relief to millions of people living in our communities.

Cover photo: The NIJC client pictured on the cover is a Mexican transgender woman who won asylum in 2015 after four years of fighting her case with the help of her pro bono attorneys. She fled Mexico after suffering persecution because of her gender identity. She now lives safely in the United States and will be eligible to become a permanent resident next year.

17th Annual NIJC Human Rights Awards

Since 2000, the National Immigrant Justice Center’s Human Rights Awards luncheon has honored human rights champions and celebrated the contributions of business, civic, and philanthropic leaders.

2016 Awardees

The Jeanne and Joseph Sullivan Award and Keynote: Monica McWilliamsMs. McWilliams is a leader in the field of human rights and conflict resolution. Most recently, she supported Syrian women as they created the Syrian Women’s Network, a powerful force in promoting the role of women in the conflict resolution and transition process. Ms. McWilliams co-founded the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition, composed of women representing both sides of the conflict. The Coalition ensured that women played a role in the peace negotiations, including in the signing of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement – a major step forward in Northern Ireland’s peace process. Ms. McWillams was elected to the Legislative Assembly in Northern Ireland in 1998 and subsequently served as the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission from 2005 to 2011. Currently, Ms. McWilliams is a professor of woman’s studies at the University of Ulster and an associate researcher with the Transitional Justice Institute. She serves on the Prisons Reform Oversight Group, advising the Northern Ireland Department of Justice.

Human Rights Practitioner Award: John “Jay” Reidy, General Attorney, AT&T Inc.After working with NIJC to represent immigrant youth seeking deferred action, Mr. Reidy spearheaded a corporate-law firm partnership to identify pro bono counsel for asylum seekers, who often have complex cases that require significant preparation and resources. Mr. Reidy has invigorated NIJC’s pro bono network and expanded resources for NIJC’s asylum clients. Human Rights Corporate Award: Walgreen Co.More than 30 Walgreen Co. attorneys have provided vital legal services to nearly 100 immigrants in the past year. The Walgreen Co. team’s support at Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals clinics has helped hundreds of immigrant children and their families pursue safe and productive lives in the United States.
