Home schooling can seem frustrating at times. Especially in March when we think our children

A Word to Fathers ~ By Bill Stephens

Dale Carnegie

I would like to recommend a book that every teenager should read, Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and

Influence People.” This book is by far the best self-help book ever written. The title says it all. We live in a

society where young people are not taught to “win” people over to their side. Most likely because they do not

believe they have a side to win people over to. Young people need to know that they are leaving an impression

wherever they go and all impressions lead somewhere. What makes Dale Carnegie’s book so effective is that

all his principles are focused on the other person. Ultimately, how to “win” people is to put them first. Here is

a sample of some of Dale Carnegie’s principles: Don’t criticize, condemn or complain. Give honest and sin-

cere appreciation. Become genuinely interested in other people. Smile. Remember the other person’s name

and use it often. Avoid arguments. If you are wrong admit it quickly. Let the other person do the talking.

Try to honestly see from the other person’s point of view. Begin with praise and honest appreciation.

All of these principles are biblically based and powerful in their simplicity. The overarching theme in all of

these principles is that a person has to be in control of his own emotions. Eighty percent of success is being

well-liked. A happy, positive person is going to draw people to him. A person who makes other people feel

important will be a success in whatever he or she does.

Yearbook Coordinator Wanted Looking for people to take my place beginning next school year 2014-2015. I will be

retiring and I will need to train one or two people this June 2014. The yearbook is done

entirely on the computer and the company provides support to make your job easier. If

you like scrapbooking, you'll enjoy this. It's rewarding to know that you are capturing

memories of the children and their parents. If interested, please contact me.

BATTLESHIP IOWA

THURSDAY, MAY 15th. Grades K – High School. Welcome Aboard! Battleship IOWA is a unique opportunity for

you and your kids to engage with the past and connect with history through an oriented adventure on board the Battle-

ship of President's. Built in 1940, the USS IOWA served our country for over 50 years. Designated the “World's Great-

est Naval Ship” due to her big guns, heavy armor, fast speed, longevity and modernization, she kept pace with technol-

ogy for more than 50 years. During her more than 50 years in service, IOWA has welcomed and escorted our nation's

Commander in Chief on many occasions. No other battleship in our nation's history has been host to more U.S. Presi-

dents than the IOWA. The IOWA served her country in World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Cold War and Post Cold

War. Today veterans, their proud families, school children and curious international tourists are awed by IOWA's proud

legacy as one of the fastest and most powerful ships ever to sail the world's oceans. Teak decks and steel bulkheads

echo the words and deeds of significant individuals including three U.S. Presidents, distinguished military figures, count-

less foreign dignitaries, and most importantly, thousands of her own heroic IOWA sailors. Just a few of the highlights

on this 1 ½ to 2 hour guided tour: crew living areas on the tour show you how officers and crew slept, ate, and relaxed

when not on duty; IOWA's World-famous Captain's Cabin was the actual living and sleeping quarters of President

Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR and his War Cabinet planned major WW2 strategy at the table in 1943; see the recently

restored Admiral's Bridge, where three of America's Five-Star Admirals observed IOWA's underway operations; plus

much, much more to see. Due to the historic nature of the ship, wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers are not permit-

ted on-board.

TIME: Please arrive by 10:10 am. The tour will start promptly at 10:30 am.

COST: $8.00 per child and per adult. Also, if you are interested in eating lunch on-board, you can purchase lunch for

$13.08 (this includes tax) per person. Lunch is eaten in the Crew Mess and includes a selection of deli-style sandwiches,

chips, cookies, and waters. There is a minimum of 20 lunches that would need to be purchased for the group in order to

year expanding our Biblical understanding of character, learning what counts as character with God and how and when

to apply it. We will engage in age appropriate discussions along with enjoyable, yet thought provoking activities for

ladies and gentlemen in grades K – 8.

PE K - 8 —Teacher: Helen Tinker My desire and focus this year will be to teach group outdoor games that might be

played in a schoolyard. I would like to break up the year into four week blocks so that we have ample time to learn the

skill for each activity and to enjoy improving our skills. I would like to take the time to learn the rules and team sports-

manship as well as gracious winning and losing. The schedule I have put together at this time is as follows:

Block 1. Four Square- for all ages

Block 2. Flag football- for all ages

Block 3. Spud – younger ages

Ultimate Frisbee older ages

Block 4. Jump rope/ Chinese jump rope-Badminton

I would like to possibly add additional games to our schedule so this is tentative at the four week time block. I look

forward to getting to know each of you and your children.

Text: Consumer Math (2nd edition) BJU Press softback ISBN# 1-57924-892-6

(2005 publish date) teacher's ISBN# 1-57924-893-4

This is a full year, high school level course - a God-centered, Scripturally-based approach to stewardship, and the finan-

cial transactions that are encountered in every-day grown-up real life. Based on the five essential principles for the con-

sumer: 1) plan ahead 2) shop for bargains 3) maintain the value of your belongings 4) know when to borrow, and 5)

keep accurate financial records.

Will cover such things as income and tax deductions, budgeting, personal banking, borrowing money, transportation

costs/investments ( buying and maintaining a car), food costs and budgeting strategies, clothing costs and budgeting

strategies, housing costs and budgeting (including home purchases and maintenance), life and health insurance, income

taxes (including completion of the basic tax forms), and vacation planning. (whew!)

These are BASIC LIFE SKILLS that everyone needs, and few, at this time in their life (or ever) are given adequate in-

struction on! Students will learn concepts in class, then complete daily assignments at home. Unit tests will be sent

home, to be administered by a parent or instructor, and brought back to the next class session. TEACHER’S EDITION

REQUIRED -- Parent(s) welcome and encouraged, but not required, to accompany students to class, in order to support

study during the week (or to learn alongside their student!). Parents or students will correct the daily work.

Math concepts will be basic, but there’s quite a bit of it!! -- at least completion of a Pre-Algebra class would be

wise. Ratios, Percentages, basic equation solving, and measurements (including conversions) will be COVERED, but a

basic knowledge would be good . . . This is a great math option for the student who is NOT strong in math skills, but

needs to get the required classes in for graduation, as WELL as being a terrific life-skills course for ANYONE, includ-

ing the mathematically gifted :-) Recommended for students who are seniors, especially before they “head out into the

world”.

(same text as previous 4 yrs) teacher's ISBN# 1-57924-386-X

**a placement exam must be completed prior to enrollment - call or e-mail ASAP**

This is a full year, high school level course - STUDENT MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ALGEBRA I

PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT - I do recommend, for most, that students take Alg 2 the year immediately following Alg 1,

if they are intending to do BOTH classes - Alg 2 content relies HEAVILY on Alg 1 content!!.

This is a presentation of Algebra as an exercise in stewardship of creation, developing thinking skills and Christ-

likeness . . . wow! Chapter 1 dives right into factoring polynomials, binomials, and trinomials, assuming a pretty strong

mastery. Text moves through linear equations and inequalities, linear relations, quadratic equations and functions,

graphing, linear programming, radicals and exponential functions and equations, imaginary and other complex numbers,

rational expressions and equations, trigonometry, and matrix algebra. Students will learn concepts in class, then com-

plete daily assignments at home. Daily homework assignments will be corrected by student or parent. Unit tests will be

sent home, to be administered by a parent or instructor, and brought back to the next class session. TEACHER’S EDI-

TION REQUIRED -- Parent(s) welcome and encouraged, but not required, to accompany students to class, in order to

support study during the week. The subject matter here is complex - TOO complex for a once a week class. It will be

TWO (2) days per week, though there may be a FEW Friday classes that we DON’T hold (due to holiday schedules,

etc).

Materials: 3-ring binder and paper, ruler (inches and cm), and a scientific calculator. (graphing calculator NOT neces-

This is a full year course. Will cover skills required to proceed into High School Algebra, and students completing it will be WELL PRE-

PARED for Algebra 1.

**I get asked often, which math should my Jr Higher be doing?” If your student does a decent job (80% average) on basic mathematics,

especially multiplication & division, and maybe ok on fractions, he/she should take Pre-Algebra. The current “fashionable” trend in educa-

tion these days (public and private) is that students should take Algebra I in 8th grade, which would mean Pre-Alg in 7th. This works for

some, and is (in my opinion) a GRAVE mistake for a lot of others! According to Bob Jones, this is an 8th grade curriculum.

This class is available, as well, to High School students who require additional work on the basics!

Call me if you need to talk about any of this!

Starts right out working with equations, covering properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Will move into decimals,

integers, multiples, factors, fractions, equations and inequalities, ratio, proportion, percentages, geometry and graphing. Emphasis through

entire text is on equations and solving them, using all the mathematical concepts introduced. These basic skills would be prerequisite for an

Algebra course. Students will learn concepts in class, then complete daily assignments at home. Daily homework to be corrected by parent

and/or student. Tests will be sent home, to be administered by a parent or homeschooling teacher, and brought back to the next class ses-

sion. TEACHER’S

EDITION REQUIRED -- Parent(s) welcome and encouraged, but not required, to accompany students to class, in order to support study

during the week.

Modern World History In Modern World History we will not only be studying historical events, we will also be studying the meaning

of the world’s history. As Christians we believe we are all on a journey to the end of time. The Christian histo-

rian therefore, has great hope concerning the journey of man, his own journey in history, and the end of time.

As believers in Christ we acknowledge that God is active and at work in the world and in history. We also be-

lieve it is important for us to examine how and why different events happen, how they are connected to us to-

day, and how they relate to our salvation. In order to really understand history and our place in it, we will pay

special attention to the philosophy and theology that go along with that history. In order to explore the root of

things that happen, the Christian historian must include philosophy and theology in his study. If he does not,

then according to philosopher and historian Josef Pieper, he “is altogether unable to attain a serious view of the

totality of history.”

United States History For any students who are interested in or need to

take a United States History class this year: Greg Loumagne will be offering a U.S. History class this year.

Course description: In United States History we will not only be studying the historical

events from the pre-colonial era of the US to modern times, we will also be studying the meaning

of our nation's history. As Christians we believe we are all on a spiritual journey within time. The Chris-

tian historian therefore, has great hope concerning the journey of man, his own journey in history and the end

of time. As believers in Christ we acknowledge that God is active and at work in the world and in history. We

also believe it is important for us to examine how and why different events happen, how they are connected to

us today, and how they relate to our salvation. In order to really understand history and our place in it, we

will pay special attention to the philosophy and theology that go along with that history. In order to explore

the root of things that happen, the Christian historian must include philosophy and theology in his study. If he

does not, then according to philosopher and historian Joseph Pieper, he is "altogether unable to attain a seri-

ous view of the totality of history."

Classroom activities will include reading, writing, and discussion as well as time for lecture. Students will be

encouraged to not only learn the history of our nation but how it applies to their lives, especially their walk

with Jesus.

If you are interested and would like to be added to the class list, please email Greg at

[email protected].
