Heart Burn in Pregnancy What Causes it?
Ø Change in angle of gastro-esophageal sphincter (flap in throat) and increase in intra-gastric pressure due to uterus (pressure on abdominal organs)
Ø Uterus displaces stomach upward, rotates stomach. Delayed gastric emptying-or the food stays in the tummy longer
Ø High levels of progesterone, relaxin, estrogen (pregnancy hormones) – decreases resting pressure of the flap/valve in your throat that keeps food down and acid out
Ø Intensifies with advancing gestation, ends after delivery
What Can I do?
