Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

PREPARATION FOR THE WORD Please rise in body or in spirit.

PRELUDE - Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service J. S. Bach SILENT PRAYER from the Syrian Church

Lord, open to us today the sea of your mercy and water us with full streams from the riches of your grace and springs of your kindness.

Make us children of quietness and heirs of peace; kindle in us the fire of your love; sow in us your fear; strengthen our weakness by your power

and bind us close to you and to each other. Amen. NOTICES OF CONGREGATIONAL LIFE Minute for Missions - Winter Relief; Cuba Church Visit

(Please sign and pass the greeter pads along the pew and back again.)

CHORAL INTROIT (11:00) - The Church of Christ Cannot Be Bound MCKEE CALL TO WORSHIP

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Jesus said: You are the light of the world. Let our light shine, giving glory to God. Let us worship God.

HYMN 662 - Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies RATISBON

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord, you call us to be salt and light; you ask a lot and expect the world of us. Forgive us when we shy away from your call or believe that we are not adequate for the task, as if you have not already blessed us with your spirit and your strength. Forgive our unbelief and strengthen us in our convictions, for the sake of your kingdom. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

RESPONSE OF PRAISE: Hymn 624 - I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art TOULON Our hope is in no other save in thee; our faith is built upon thy promise free; Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure, that in thy strength we evermore endure.

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

TIME WITH CHILDREN (11:00)

(After the message, pre-k through second grade children may attend Godly Play and be picked up from the third floor classrooms at the conclusion of worship)

CHORAL CALL TO PRAYER (11:00) - Blessed Jesus, at Your Word LIEBSTER JESU PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION FIRST SCRIPTURE - Isaiah 58:1-9a ANTHEM (11:00) - Draw Us In The Spirit’s Tether Harold W. Friedell

Draw us in the Spirit’s tether, for when humbly, in thy name, two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them: Alleluia! Touch we now thy garment’s hem. As the brethren used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father, break the bread and bless the cup. So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping giving, we may true disciples be. We will serve thee faithfully.

SECOND SCRIPTURE - Matthew 5:13-16 SERMON - “Reclaiming a Life”

MISSION IN WORSHIP TODAY

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN AND ST. ANNE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCHES CO-HOSTING WINTER RELIEF HOMELESS SHELTER: FEBRUARY 13-20 - Help is needed and appreciated NOW, more than ever. It takes over 100 volunteers to make this week happen. Our online website, www.homelesshelper.org, is up and running with more information about the volunteer opportunities. In addition, we have an immediate need for clean twin size sheet sets and towels, hand towels and washcloths. On Sunday, please drop-off any items marked “winter relief” in the narthex or in the church office Monday-Friday. Last, but not least, our guests love home-baked goodies; it is a real treat as they come in from a cold day. Such goodies may be delivered around 4:00 pm any afternoon during our host week.

CUBA CHURCH VISIT - Within the context of the partnership between our Presbytery of Baltimore and the Central Presbytery of the Cuban Presbyterian Reformed Church (https://www.oikoumene.org/en/member-churches/presbyterian-reformed-church-in-cuba), Rev. Hathaway, Betsy Jenkins and Katie Barbour will be visiting that Presbytery from February 10-17. They will spend the weekend at the congregation in Caibarien then attend a conference (“Encuentro”) with representatives of the thirteen congregations of the Cuban presbytery. Twenty-eight members of our presbytery, including Moderator, Jack Carlson, and Executive Presbyter, Jackie Taylor will travel with representatives of ten congregations of our presbytery. “SOUPER” BOWL OF CARING - Since 1990, young people have been leading the charge and inspiring others to collect dollars and food around the time of the “Big Game” (the Super Bowl). Groups then give 100% of their donations to a local charity of their choice. Our youth have decided to give all money collected in worship today to the Light House. Nationwide, more than $110 million has been collected to date changing the nation's largest weekend of football into the largest weekend of caring (www.souperbowl.org). SKINNERS TO LETOHRAD - Following some years of conversation, our partnership with the Letohrad parish of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren will now include a longer term volunteer commitment from our congregation. Ed and BJ Skinner will spend six months in Letohrad (March – September), working with that congregation in a host of different programs, including new opportunities for outreach by the church using the “vehicle” of English language lessons. Ed and BJ are being commissioned for this ministry in worship today. The MEMBER DIRECTORY & ANNUAL REPORT are available today at the rear of the church.

ANNOUNCEMENTS MIDDLE EAST LECTURE TODAY FROM 12:15-1:30 PM - The Justice & Peace Committee is delighted to host Jean-François Seznec, PhD, for his annual talk on the Middle East in Fellowship Hall. The lecture is titled, “A Trump Peace in Syria.” Light refreshments will be served and child care provided. Parking passes for the Hillman garage will be available. QUIET WATERS PARK TODAY - 5th graders (and parent), middle school and high school youth are invited to have some winter fun ice skating! Meet at the park after worship around 12:30 pm; pick-up at 2:30 pm. Bring money for food or pack a lunch. Skating paid for by Family Ministry. Thanks to chaperone, Gwen Manseau! BIBLE STUDY: WEDNESDAYS, 4:00-5:00 PM - In the Kinhart Center with the pastor who is preaching the following Sunday. The upcoming scripture will be examined. Join our lively group. Questions? [email protected] or [email protected]. CAMPUS CARE DAY: FEBRUARY 11 - Volunteers who would like to help with campus maintenance projects big and small are invited. This Saturday from 8:00 am-2:00 pm, or any portion of that time. For planning purposes, RSVP to Linda Hanifin Bonner ([email protected]). Breakfast and lunch provided. WINTER RELIEF LUNCHES: FEBRUARY 12 - Children and parents are invited to come prepare lunches for our Winter Relief guests next Sunday. Meet in Fellowship Hall after worship at 12:15 pm. To volunteer to bring needed items (food, chips, drinks, veggies, etc.) go to the Sign-up Genius (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0949aca72ca3f94-winter1). SHEPHERDS NEEDED - During Sunday School, 8 shepherds are needed to meet the session-approved clause of “2 adults per classroom,” as written in our Children’s & Youth Protection Policy. NO teaching required! What is needed is a love of kids and a willingness to jump in and lend a hand if needed. Please return this tear-off in the offering plate or to Miss Good.
