Ah spring is in the air For many people spring is a

welcome break from the cold blustery winter The sun is

shining the days are longer and fowers are in bloom But

if you have a respiratory problem like COPD or asthma

common things like pollen grass fowers and tree

allergens can make it diffcult for you to enjoy the warmer

weather Here are some things you can do to keep fare-

ups under control when the pollen count is high

bull Take all medication exactly as directed Even if you

havenrsquot been taking your medicine because yoursquove

been feeling fne now is the time to get back on track

with your prescriptions

bull If you have asthma you should monitor your peak

fow daily Peak fow meters tell you how your asthma

is doing on a daily basis Peak fow readings will start

to fall two to three days before symptoms appear

bull Avoid being outside when the pollen count is high

usually between 5 am and 10 am Keep an eye on

the pollen count and plan to do any outdoor activities

when counts are low

Wondering how to track the pollen count when yoursquore

on the go Therersquos an app for that Check the App

Store or Google Play and search ldquoPollenrdquo to see what

is available

bull Keep grass short and fnd someone else to do the

yard work for you if possible If you do it yourself

wear a mask

bull Pollen can stick to your body and clothes and

transfer to your home Take a shower and wash your

clothes after being outside

bull Avoid hanging your laundry out to dry Pollens

cling to your linens and can cause serious breathing

problems later when yoursquore sleeping on those sheets

bull Opt for air conditioning instead of opening your

windows in your car and home Keeping windows

closed and using an air flter with a HEPA (high-

effciency particulate absorbing) flter goes a long way

toward keeping pollen out of your home

Itrsquos almost impossible to completely avoid triggers

The trick to managing your breathing is to take your

medications exactly as directed and take steps to prevent

or avoid your triggers before they impact your health

Go Ahead mdash Stop and Smell the Roses Springtime is here and most of us are enjoying the longer

warmer days and fowers in bloom But for many of us

spring means allergy season bringing sneezing and itchy

watery eyes When those familiar symptoms hit itrsquos time

to look into options that can help ease and treat seasonal

allergies Luckily there are several over-the-counter and

prescription drugs that can make you feel better

Antihistamines have been used to treat allergy symptoms

for many years They can be taken in various forms

including pills liquids and nose sprays Antihistamines

work by blocking a substance released by the immune

system that triggers allergy symptoms like redness

swelling and itching

Decongestants do exactly what their name says They

relieve congestion and are often prescribed along with

antihistamines They shrink swollen nasal tissues and

blood vessels to help bring relief

In some cases steroids are prescribed to treat allergies

They can reduce infammation and prevent annoying

stuffness and sneezing Steroids also known as

corticosteroids are available in several forms including

inhalers Steroids can be very effective but must be taken

regularly to be benefcial Plus it can take a bit of time for

their impact to be felt

Keep in mind that allergy medications can have side

effects such as drowsiness or insomnia depending on

the drug And always follow the instructions for your

medications

Donrsquot let allergies keep you from enjoying the season

Treat your symptoms and feel your best

Power Down to Power Up If your bedtime routine includes using your smartphone

e-reader or tablet yoursquore not alone After all when you

have so many gadgets that offer news articles e-books

games and email access all in one small package it can

be tough to ldquopower downrdquo If you use your smartphone

as an alarm clock chances are you literally sleep with your

phone You may not realize it but this could be affecting

your sleep in a major way

bull Your bedroom should be a relaxing sanctuary suited

to rest Using electronic devices to do things like

respond to emails and work on projects can make it

diffcult to relax and get a good nightrsquos sleep

bull The light from electronics and phone chargers may

prevent your body from producing melatonin a

hormone your body creates to regulate sleep

bull Reading a suspenseful novel or playing a game on

your device can stimulate your mind and make it

diffcult for you to relax and be ready for sleep

Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep each

night If you have trouble getting to sleep or staying

asleep contact your primary care doctor Your provider

can identify any underlying issues and help you get the

sleep you need

Donrsquot have a primary care doctor Visit

wwwBlueChoiceSCcom to fnd one

and well-being but many of us fnd that getting those

needed Zrsquos is a major problem The American Sleep

Association reports that as many as half of all Americans

experience occasional sleep issues while around 10

percent report chronic insomnia Although there are

many simple and effective techniques and remedies

that can help you sleep better sometimes lack of sleep

requires an over-the-counter or prescription drug

BlueChoicereg covers several generic prescription sedatives

from allergic reactions to daytime drowsiness anxiety

depression and nervousness Also these drugs can have

serious interactions with alcohol or with other drugs you

may be taking

To help minimize overuse of these drugs our Quantity

Management program limits monthly supplies This

program is based on recommended limits set by the US

Food and Drug Administration Note that this program

only affects the amount of medication covered by your

health plan You and your doctor make the fnal decision (also called hypnotics) that might help on the amount of medication that is right for you

warmer days and fowers in bloom But for many of us

spring means allergy season bringing sneezing and itchy

watery eyes When those familiar symptoms hit itrsquos time

to look into options that can help ease and treat seasonal

allergies Luckily there are several over-the-counter and

prescription drugs that can make you feel better

Antihistamines have been used to treat allergy symptoms

for many years They can be taken in various forms

including pills liquids and nose sprays Antihistamines

work by blocking a substance released by the immune

system that triggers allergy symptoms like redness

swelling and itching

Decongestants do exactly what their name says They

relieve congestion and are often prescribed along with

antihistamines They shrink swollen nasal tissues and

blood vessels to help bring relief

In some cases steroids are prescribed to treat allergies

They can reduce infammation and prevent annoying

stuffness and sneezing Steroids also known as

corticosteroids are available in several forms including

inhalers Steroids can be very effective but must be taken

regularly to be benefcial Plus it can take a bit of time for

their impact to be felt

Keep in mind that allergy medications can have side

effects such as drowsiness or insomnia depending on

the drug And always follow the instructions for your

medications

Can 5210 Save Your Family Maybe If you want a happier and healthier family

5210 is really just smart lifestyle changes Similar to quitting smoking or wearing your seatbelt itrsquos a modifcation of daily

habits Designed to increase healthy eating and active living in children (and parents) ldquo5210 Letrsquos Gordquo is a nationally

recognized program that incorporates

bull 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables bull 1 hour or more of physical activity

bull 2 hours or fewer of recreational screen time bull 0 sugary drinks more water and low-fat milk

How does this bring your family closer Many of the alternate activities are family group activities

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides

vitamins and minerals important for supporting

growth and development and for optimal immune

function Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories

and fat making them a healthy choice anytime Itrsquos easier

than you might think Add fruits and vegetables to foods

you already make like pasta soups casseroles pizza

rice etc Add fruit to your cereal pancakes or other

breakfast foods Let the kids help you plan the menu

Watching TV is associated with more snacking

and increased obesity Too much TV is linked

to lower reading scores and attention problems Itrsquos

important to limit all screen time including TV computer

smartphones and video games So limit recreational

TV or computer use to two hours or fewer What to do

instead Work a puzzle Turn on some music and dance

Read a book or magazine Play some board games or

charades Or just hang out and catch up with your family

water is the best option for thirst
