Were happy to announce that Healthwatch Lewisham and our south eastLondon Healthwatch colleagues were highly commended at the HealthwatchNetwork Awards 2017 Our partnership work evaluating the NHS Englands winter communicationsacross the six boroughs was shortlisted for the Local Healthwatch workingtogether award Although we were disappointed that we were unable to bring the award backhome to Lewisham We cannot begrudge the winners Healthwatch Lambethand Southwark whose work improving peoples experiences when they leavehospital came out on top
Arlettes Arrival We would like to give a warmwelcome to our new NHS ComplaintsAdvocate Arlette Meli Arlette joins the team after previouslyvolunteering with us Her role is tohandle NHS complaints by providingsupport to Lewisham residents whowould like to bring a complaintagainst an NHS service provider Arlette has a background in FinanceOperation Management and LawWhen she is not working Arlette enjoys reading travelling and spending timewith her family

Following Fays Fortnight returning to our last e-Bulletin We thought therewas no better opportunity than to bring back Marzenas month Now for thosewho are unaware Marzena Zoladz is our dedicated Engagement Officer forLewisham Marzena has spent the last month working with a variety of community groupsand attended local events ensuring your voices are always heard She attended the following events

Peoples Day We had another fantastic year at Peoples Day having the opportunity to talkto hundreds of residents on what turned out to be one of the hottest days ofthe year Thankfully we packed plenty of water A big thank you must go toour volunteers who like always offered incredible support Peoples Day also allowed to us discover Marzenas hidden talent - facepainting Her artistic skills were put to the test and we must say she passedPlenty of children (and adults too) were able to go home happy with facesadorned with spiders sharks and cats to name a few

Helen suffers from bipolardisorder She had been sectionedand admitted to a local mentalhealth unit While she was aresident she felt that somemembers of the staff did not treather with respect and dignity Shealso did not understand why shewas sectioned At the time of her complaint shefelt distraught lost andvulnerable She approached Healthwatch for support in bringing hercomplaint against the medical staff on the ward Helen wanted an apology forthe poor treatment she received an explanation of the reason why she wassectioned and further information regarding her aftercare in case of relapseShe also wanted to have access to her medical record As a sectioned patient it was necessary for our advocate to visit Helen tounderstand the full extent of her concerns Our advocate explained theoptions available through the complaints process and Helen was able tochoose her next steps At various stages of the complaint Helenrsquos health fluctuated and thereforeour advocate had to be sensitive to her situation Upon the Trustrsquos receipt of the complaint Helen met with the in housecomplaint investigator and a number of changes were made and issuesresolved During the meeting Helen received an apology and explanationsaround her treatment The Trust also began conversations with staff on theward about the distressing nature of being restrained and medicated toencourage a greater understanding and empathy for patients As a result of the complaint the Trust promised to reflect further on itssystems regarding medical record requests by patients It was felt that futurerequests should go via the ward manager Patient facing signs would bedisplayed to this effect and it would become a standing item within allcommunity team meetings Helen was very satisfied with the outcome of hercomplaint By raising the issues on the ward Helen has helped the Trust to reflect onsome of its processes and practices to reevaluate them for the benefit ofothers Due to her poor health at the time while on the ward Helen was notin a position to make the complaint herself She did not have the means ather disposal or the capacity to put on paper her wishes and feelings Helenpraised the advocacy service and said she could not have achieved thesame result without their support

Healthwatch Lewisham is embarking ona project looking into the AccessibleInformation Standard (AIS)
The aim of the standard is to make surethat people who have a disabilityimpairment or sensory loss can haveaccess to informationthey understandas well as anycommunication support that they need Our project will look into localimplementation of the standard by
providers and first hand experiences of local residents with sensory andlearning disabilities

inspections into specialist mental healthservices giving the most complete pictureever of the quality of mental health provisionfor people in England Inspectors found many examples of excellentcare ndash but they also found too much poor careand far too much variation in both quality andaccess across different services This isparticularly concerning given the increasingdemand for mental health services meaningthat more people risk receiving care that isnot good enough ndash or no care at all By 31 May 2017 68 of core services provided
by NHS trusts and 72 of independent mental health locations were rated asgood with 6 of NHS and 3 of independent core services rated asoutstanding Of the 22 NHS trusts originally rated as inadequate or requiresimprovement that have been re-inspected 16 achieved an improved overallrating And nearly all NHS and independent services were rated as good oroutstanding for having caring and compassionate staff (NHS 88 good 9outstanding independent 93 good 5 outstanding) However the report identifies several areas of concern physicalenvironments not designed to keep people safe care that is over-restrictiveand institutional in nature and poor recording and sharing of informationthat undermines the efforts of staff to work together to make sure thatpeople get the right care at the right time To view the report click here

Helen suffers from bipolardisorder She had been sectionedand admitted to a local mentalhealth unit While she was aresident she felt that somemembers of the staff did not treather with respect and dignity Shealso did not understand why shewas sectioned At the time of her complaint shefelt distraught lost andvulnerable She approached Healthwatch for support in bringing hercomplaint against the medical staff on the ward Helen wanted an apology forthe poor treatment she received an explanation of the reason why she wassectioned and further information regarding her aftercare in case of relapseShe also wanted to have access to her medical record As a sectioned patient it was necessary for our advocate to visit Helen tounderstand the full extent of her concerns Our advocate explained theoptions available through the complaints process and Helen was able tochoose her next steps At various stages of the complaint Helenrsquos health fluctuated and thereforeour advocate had to be sensitive to her situation Upon the Trustrsquos receipt of the complaint Helen met with the in housecomplaint investigator and a number of changes were made and issuesresolved During the meeting Helen received an apology and explanationsaround her treatment The Trust also began conversations with staff on theward about the distressing nature of being restrained and medicated toencourage a greater understanding and empathy for patients As a result of the complaint the Trust promised to reflect further on itssystems regarding medical record requests by patients It was felt that futurerequests should go via the ward manager Patient facing signs would bedisplayed to this effect and it would become a standing item within allcommunity team meetings Helen was very satisfied with the outcome of hercomplaint By raising the issues on the ward Helen has helped the Trust to reflect onsome of its processes and practices to reevaluate them for the benefit ofothers Due to her poor health at the time while on the ward Helen was notin a position to make the complaint herself She did not have the means ather disposal or the capacity to put on paper her wishes and feelings Helenpraised the advocacy service and said she could not have achieved thesame result without their support

inspections into specialist mental healthservices giving the most complete pictureever of the quality of mental health provisionfor people in England Inspectors found many examples of excellentcare ndash but they also found too much poor careand far too much variation in both quality andaccess across different services This isparticularly concerning given the increasingdemand for mental health services meaningthat more people risk receiving care that isnot good enough ndash or no care at all By 31 May 2017 68 of core services provided
by NHS trusts and 72 of independent mental health locations were rated asgood with 6 of NHS and 3 of independent core services rated asoutstanding Of the 22 NHS trusts originally rated as inadequate or requiresimprovement that have been re-inspected 16 achieved an improved overallrating And nearly all NHS and independent services were rated as good oroutstanding for having caring and compassionate staff (NHS 88 good 9outstanding independent 93 good 5 outstanding) However the report identifies several areas of concern physicalenvironments not designed to keep people safe care that is over-restrictiveand institutional in nature and poor recording and sharing of informationthat undermines the efforts of staff to work together to make sure thatpeople get the right care at the right time To view the report click here

Helen suffers from bipolardisorder She had been sectionedand admitted to a local mentalhealth unit While she was aresident she felt that somemembers of the staff did not treather with respect and dignity Shealso did not understand why shewas sectioned At the time of her complaint shefelt distraught lost andvulnerable She approached Healthwatch for support in bringing hercomplaint against the medical staff on the ward Helen wanted an apology forthe poor treatment she received an explanation of the reason why she wassectioned and further information regarding her aftercare in case of relapseShe also wanted to have access to her medical record As a sectioned patient it was necessary for our advocate to visit Helen tounderstand the full extent of her concerns Our advocate explained theoptions available through the complaints process and Helen was able tochoose her next steps At various stages of the complaint Helenrsquos health fluctuated and thereforeour advocate had to be sensitive to her situation Upon the Trustrsquos receipt of the complaint Helen met with the in housecomplaint investigator and a number of changes were made and issuesresolved During the meeting Helen received an apology and explanationsaround her treatment The Trust also began conversations with staff on theward about the distressing nature of being restrained and medicated toencourage a greater understanding and empathy for patients As a result of the complaint the Trust promised to reflect further on itssystems regarding medical record requests by patients It was felt that futurerequests should go via the ward manager Patient facing signs would bedisplayed to this effect and it would become a standing item within allcommunity team meetings Helen was very satisfied with the outcome of hercomplaint By raising the issues on the ward Helen has helped the Trust to reflect onsome of its processes and practices to reevaluate them for the benefit ofothers Due to her poor health at the time while on the ward Helen was notin a position to make the complaint herself She did not have the means ather disposal or the capacity to put on paper her wishes and feelings Helenpraised the advocacy service and said she could not have achieved thesame result without their support

providers and first hand experiences of local residents with sensory andlearning disabilities

by NHS trusts and 72 of independent mental health locations were rated asgood with 6 of NHS and 3 of independent core services rated asoutstanding Of the 22 NHS trusts originally rated as inadequate or requiresimprovement that have been re-inspected 16 achieved an improved overallrating And nearly all NHS and independent services were rated as good oroutstanding for having caring and compassionate staff (NHS 88 good 9outstanding independent 93 good 5 outstanding) However the report identifies several areas of concern physicalenvironments not designed to keep people safe care that is over-restrictiveand institutional in nature and poor recording and sharing of informationthat undermines the efforts of staff to work together to make sure thatpeople get the right care at the right time To view the report click here

Healthwatch Lewisham is embarking ona project looking into the AccessibleInformation Standard (AIS)
The aim of the standard is to make surethat people who have a disabilityimpairment or sensory loss can haveaccess to informationthey understandas well as anycommunication support that they need Our project will look into localimplementation of the standard by
providers and first hand experiences of local residents with sensory andlearning disabilities

inspections into specialist mental healthservices giving the most complete pictureever of the quality of mental health provisionfor people in England Inspectors found many examples of excellentcare ndash but they also found too much poor careand far too much variation in both quality andaccess across different services This isparticularly concerning given the increasingdemand for mental health services meaningthat more people risk receiving care that isnot good enough ndash or no care at all By 31 May 2017 68 of core services provided
by NHS trusts and 72 of independent mental health locations were rated asgood with 6 of NHS and 3 of independent core services rated asoutstanding Of the 22 NHS trusts originally rated as inadequate or requiresimprovement that have been re-inspected 16 achieved an improved overallrating And nearly all NHS and independent services were rated as good oroutstanding for having caring and compassionate staff (NHS 88 good 9outstanding independent 93 good 5 outstanding) However the report identifies several areas of concern physicalenvironments not designed to keep people safe care that is over-restrictiveand institutional in nature and poor recording and sharing of informationthat undermines the efforts of staff to work together to make sure thatpeople get the right care at the right time To view the report click here
