• Private sector healthcare spending has doubled in the last 10 years

• Private clinics have increased their number of outpatient centers and increased their number of beds, mainly due to three factors:1) Increase in the number of patients seeking medical attention2) Aging Chilean population3) State-of-the-art technology available for diagnosis and treatment

• Private clinics are interested in healthcare solutions in, for example: digitalization, diagnostics technology, patient infrastructure, recycling, Process and Administration Systems

• Teletón is a Chilean charity organization specialized in healthcare of the disabled, particularly disabled children

• Active with its current name from 1978

• Providing support, assistance and treatment to the disabled across the whole country

• Attends over 85% of the under 20-year-olds with disability in Chile

• Over 300.000 medical and therapeutic procedures annually

• With 3000 new patients every year, Teletón is also looking into investing in new healthcare technology. Particular intetrest in distance healthcare and digital solutions

• Health spending (in real terms) in Chile grew consistently at close to 6% per year between 2010 and 2016, the fastest rate of growth among OECD countries

• Although health spending has increased rapidly in Chile in recent years, it still remains lower than in most other OECD countries on a per capita basis and as a share of GDP

Registration of the medical devices

• To apply the registry, you must complete the SDM/005: Medical Device Registration Required for Medical Devices Under Control- form, which is available on the website www.ispch.cl. Once completed this form it must be presented in Section Sales of the ISPCH in duplicate (original and copy), together with the documents requested in the same form and make the appropriate fee in cash. (Office Hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 13:00 pm)The documents requested on the form are:

- Certificate of Conformity Assessment issued by a certifying body authorized by the Public Health Institute of Chile = ISPCH.

- Certificate for export purposes granted by the appropriate Health Authority, duly consularizado.

- Document issued by the Manufacturer, which recognizes the applicant company as a distributor of their products, if applicable.

- Certificate of Quality Management System for Manufacturing (eg, ISO 13485, ISO 9001 or equivalent).

The verification of compliance for medical devices that are binding under control, is currently carried out by certifying agencies authorized by the Institute of Public Health. These agencies verify the conformity of the products according to specific technical standards. They also do an evaluation of the documentation accompanying the device, as outlined in Regulation DS 825/98 Article 21.

Common health issues in Chile

• Despite its relative progression in many health related aspects, Chile struggles with various distinctive health issues

• In Chile 40% of the population is overweight with up to 32,8% of women and 24,8% of men being considered obese. Obesity prevalence with both women and men is and has been steeply on the rise for decades and has been addressed by authorities, unsuccessfully

• Chile’s rates of childhood obesity are particularly alarming, as 23.4% of children in Chile under the age of 10 were overweight and 10.8% obese

• In relation, Chile has the highest percentage of diabetes in Latin America with 11%, and the number is steadily on the rise. Diabetes alone accounts for over 10% of the national healthcare spending

• Aging population structure has an inevitable effect on health issues and theirproportional prevalence in the population. In 2030 1/3 of chilean populationwill be over 60 years, and it is estimated that people over the age of 65 are almost seven times more likely to have diabetes than people between the ages of 25 and 44

• Medical facilities in Chile are some of the best in South America, especially in Santiago, where healthcare standards are very high

• Chilean healthcare is divided into two main systems: FONASA and ISAPRE

• FONASA (Fondo Nacional de Salud) is the national health care system

• Private health insurance from private insurance companies is called Instituciones de Salud Previsional, better known by the abbreviation ISAPRE.

• In principle, all workers and pensioners under FONASA are mandated to pay 7% of income for health insurance. Accounts for 69% of the population (2017).

• Isapre participants pay on average 9.2% of their income toward health insurance. Accounts for 23% of the population (2017)(missing 8% either uninsured or insured by profession at the state’s service).
