May is Cataract Awareness MonthCataracts are one of the lead-

ing causes of blindness in the United States.

During Cataract Awareness Month in May, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Thomas Eye Group reminds the public that early detection and treatment of cataracts is critical to preserving sight.

Common symptoms of a cataract may include blurred or cloudy vision; faded or dull colors; glares or halos; poor night vision; double or multiple vision in one eye; and frequent pre-scription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses.

These symptoms can indicate other eye problems that may also result in blindness if left untreated. If you have any of these symptoms, make an ap-pointment with Thomas Eye Group immediately for a complete eye exami-

What is integrative medicine?By: Jonathan stegall, MD

Integrative medicine is a growing specialty which combines the best as-pects of modern medicine with the best natural therapies. For example, with cancer treatment, this means combin-ing chemotherapy commonly used in modern medicine with advanced nutri-tion and high quality supplementation. The synergy we achieve by blending these therapies is typically incredible.

The beauty of integrative medicine is that it allows for a truly personal-ized approach. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all medicine. Instead, we look closely at each patient’s unique medical history, treatment goals, lifestyle, diet, support system, and stressors to devel-op a patient-specific protocol. In this way, we are not only integrat-ing various

treatment modalities, but we are also inte-grating the science of medicine and the art of medicine.

You might be won-dering why you did not hear more about integrative medicine in years past, and that is because the doctor-patient relationship

was one-sided. The doctor had all of the power. Today, with patients having more of a say in their care, they are demanding a more personalized ap-

proach. This is a great thing, and we need more of it in medicine!

I exclusively practice integrative medicine. For

more information, please call my of-

fice at (770) 551-2730.

Want relief from TMJ pain or Tension Headaches?By: Dr UshMa Patel Center for Advanced Dentistry

You may not have heard about Bo-tox therapy for head, neck, and/or fa-cial pain. The same effect of Botox that reduces the appearance of wrinkles is used to reduce the intensity of muscle contractions. Intense and/or prolonged muscle contractions of our muscles used for chewing can cause pain and damage to our teeth. Pain can be in the contracted muscle or can be referred to a distant site. Severe clenching and grinding of the teeth can cause the teeth to chip, break, or even need root canal treatments.

Botox is injected into the masseter muscles of the jaw to treat TMJ, an in-flammation of the TMJ joint in the jaw.

Located on both sides of the head at the point where the jawbone meets the skull, the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) is used during talking, eating, swallowing, and other everyday activi-ties. If this joint becomes displaced or is overworked through excessive teeth grinding, a person may suffer severe tension headaches, as well as sharp

pain in the jaw. BOTOX® relieves jaw tension by making muscles unable to engage in the powerful, often un-conscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain.

The BOTOX® alternative treatment for TMJ disorders and jaw tension is usually quick, straightforward, and effective. A non-surgical procedure, BOTOX® injections are administered in a doctor’s office and treatment requires no hospital stay. Most patients experi-ence noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment, although relief can take up to a week.

Recently, Botox has become a tool to help relieve migraine headaches and associated neck muscle pain. It has proven to be very effective in pain relief from muscle sources. It is important to distinguish the source of pain since Botox works on muscles. Botox can be used in differentiation of pain source. If it does not give some relief, the source of pain is probably not the muscles. Many patients seeking Botox treatment for wrinkle reduction report elimination or reduction of migraine headaches as an added bonus

EXCEPTIONAL ORTHOPAEDIC CARE...NOW CLOSER TO HOME.

May is Arthritis Awareness MonthMay is National Arthritis Awareness

Month. Led by the Arthritis Founda-tion, activities promote education about arthritis and raise funds for arthritis research, support, and advocacy. Or-thoAtlanta proudly participated in the Southeast Region 2016 Walk to Cure Arthritis earlier this month. Yet rec-ognition of this debilitating disease is year-long.

Arthritis strikes more than 50 mil-lion Americans, representing one in five adults and approximately 300,000 chil-dren. Actually a family of diseases with over 100 types, arthritis attack joints and connective tissues. Everyday life becomes more difficult for arthritis suf-ferers and common activities such as standing, walking, and climbing stairs may be nearly impossible.

Osteoarthritis is one of the more common types, occurring when the cartilage that cushions the ends of our bones wears away. As cartilage deterio-rates, bone rubs against bone, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Not all arthritis can be prevented, but you can oftentimes lower your risk if you:

• Stay active• Maintain a healthy weight

• Avoid joint injuryAlthough there is no cure for arthri-

tis at this time, OrthoAtlanta physi-cians and physical therapists can help you manage symptoms through a va-riety of treatments designed to restore mobility, reduce pain, and maintain the lifestyle you enjoy. When joint symp-toms are severe, options such as joint replacement surgery may be appropri-ate.

OrthoAtlanta Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Specialists includes offices in Johns Creek, 678-205-4261, and Gwinnett / Lawrenceville, 678-957-0757. Learn More at OrthoAtlanta.com.

You can make a difference with cardiovascular diseases

In the United States despite remark-able declines in mortality, cardiovas-cular disease (CVD), which includes coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease, remains by far the leading cause of death in men and women.

Apart from improved diagnosis and treatment, adopting simple healthy lifestyle changes can go a long way in significantly reducing heart attacks and strokes.

Diet - Observational studies have consistently shown that individuals consuming diets high in vegetables and fruits, such as the Mediterranean diet, have a reduced risk of CVD . It is possible that the apparent benefit may be due to the fact that people who eat more vegetables and fruits tend to eat less meat and saturated fat.

Exercise- Regular physical activ-ity has consistently shown benefits in reducing CVD. Adults with limited exer-cise capacity due to medical conditions should stay as physically active as their condition allows. Even modest amounts of regular physical activity such as brisk walking for 20 minutes daily are

associated with significant benefits on risk of CVD.

Smoking cessation-Cigarette smok-ing remains the leading avoidable cause of premature death. Benefits of ces-sation on reducing CVD appear after only a few months and reach that of the nonsmoker in several years. Smoking cessation can be achieved with a num-ber of approaches, including behavioral therapy, nicotine replacement therapy, and other pharmacologic therapies.

Weight loss- Obesity increases several major and modifiable risk fac-tors for CVD, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance as well as diabetes. Achieving optimal weight with lifestyle measures have shown huge beneficial effects on CVD.

Multiple, large study results have consistently indicated significantly lower CVD occurrences in people who follow low-risk lifestyles measures dis-cussed above.

Know that when you take charge of your health and make choices for healthy lifestyle you’re making choices to benefit yourself, your family and our community overall.

I was nearly 45 when I had my last child. What an eye-opener! I started doing math. How old would I be when she graduated high school? College? What??? That’s when I began the journey to opening CoreMatters 9 years ago.

The CoreMatters method creates health and strength from the inside out. Everything we do strengthens your core and teaches you to move, eat and recover properly. Core strength protects your back and makes every-thing better from swinging a golf club to lifting a grocery bag.

Our 28-day TakeDown Challenge starts May 13 (you can still get in if you call today!) and we’re excited! This eating program turns challengers into fat-burning machines. In our Janu-ary Challenge, a challenger went from Pre-Diabetic to no sign of Diabetes and dropped her Cholesterol 63 points and Triglycerides by 75 points! The Winner of the Challenge dropped 21 pounds of fat. They both did this by eating accord-ing to our plan (recipes, menus, shop-ping lists, and more)! To make it even easier, we’re partnering with Mom’s Table this time.

We are also excited to be Roswell’s only SFG Kettle bell studio. Strong-

First Giyra is the Russian “hardstyle” method Special Ops Forces practice. It’s the best core training on the planet and builds muscle density and strength without bulk. It also improves flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. It makes you STRONG, and strength makes you better at everything.

We specialize in folks over 50. We train your body to work and play when you’re not in the studio. After all, that’s what really matters! Space is limited. Call us for a free consultation today.

the CoreMatters method

Not so Ugly Betty By: Dr. Jeffrey JorDan, Jordan Orthodontics

Orthodontics today is about im-proved function of the teeth, jaws and improved facial esthetics. Likewise, orthodontic appliances of today are more efficient, more comfortable and better looking. As a result, treatment times are shorter with less discomfort, and better results can be achieved.

Traditional orthodontic appli-ances consist of brackets and wires. The brackets today come in a variety of sizes and shapes for optimal efficiency and are increasingly tooth colored. They can even be custom made for each patient with computer technology to shorten treatment time.

However, it is the orthodontic wire that actually moves the teeth and where we find the most incredible ad-

vancements. The heat activated super elastic memory wire is very flexible at room tem-perature and can be placed into the braces on extremely crooked teeth.

Then, as it warms in the mouth to body temperature, the wire exerts a light continu-

ous force on the teeth. It is this light continuous force that moves the teeth most efficiently but below the threshold of pain. No longer does the orthodontist actually tighten the braces. We simply change from one type of wire to the next. And yes, the wires can be tooth colored as well!

SuperSlow Zone is helping adults get fi t for life!

Gaining control over your fitness and your lifeFor many people, aging equals

lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle.

While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism.

Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay ac-tive and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground.

What is meaningful exercise?A critical component of stimulat-

ing the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momen-tary muscular failure in each exercise performed.

With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved.

Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity

is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exer-cise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it.

What is the SuperSlow Zone solu-tion?

The SuperSlow Zone protocol is the original and genuine slow-motion, personal strength training workout. The exercise protocol has been proven successful in both building muscle and

increasing resting metabolism, thus allowing the body to burn more calories at rest.

SuperSlow Zone provides a safe and effective workout in a short amount of time so that you can get in, get out, and get on with your busy life!

Just 60 years ago, it was an assumption that as we age we would lose our natural dentition. But, that’s not the case for today’s older adults who are keeping their natural teeth longer than ever before. A healthy mouth and teeth help you look good, eat delicious and nutritious foods, and speak clearly and confidently. Being mouth healthy is essential for good quality of life.

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive – they can tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be developing a disease like diabetes.

New research suggests that the health of your mouth mirrors the condition of your body as a whole. For example, when your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems.

Your mouth is the gateway to your body and is directly related to all systemic problems.

Maintaining good oral health habits now is espe-cially important because unhealthy bacteria in the mouth not only can harm your teeth and gums but may be associated with serious medical conditions. Research has shown that infections in the mouth may be associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes,

pneumonia and other health problems that are com-mon in older adults. It really only takes a few simple steps, including brushing and flossing at least twice daily, visiting your dentist regularly and eating a healthy diet.

Roswell Dental Care can help you keep that

healthy smile for a lifetime. Dr. David Remaley has been treating patients like family for over 30 years in Roswell and the North Atlanta area.

We always welcome new patients. Give our office a call at (470) 375-9244 for a FREE 2nd Opinion or the schedule for a regular dental checkup.
